LAHORE, Aug 27 (APP):City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL) launched a pilot project for the rehabilitation of beggars, providing them with vocational training and opportunities for dignified employment and self-employment.
According to a spokesperson on Thursday, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that screening of the first 10 families for the pilot project had been completed. In collaboration with the Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC), selected individuals would be provided vocational training, employment opportunities and facilities to establish small businesses.
The PSIC would provide easy loans of Rs500,000 each to selected deserving individuals for setting up their businesses.
He said that “Jhuggi Schools” would also be established in settlements across Lahore to facilitate the rehabilitation and education of children living in makeshift settlements.
The CTO said Traffic Police was also working with welfare organizations and establishing contacts with various institutions to impart skills to women and children belonging to deserving and vulnerable families. In collaboration with welfare organizations, beauty courses and stitching and embroidery training would also be provided to transgender beggars and women.
“With the support of Alkhidmat Foundation volunteers, the process of mapping, research and profiling of more beggars is also under way,” he added.
Shirazi said that the project aimed to free deserving people from begging and help them move towards a dignified and self-reliant life. The CTO said Traffic Police had taken action against more than 4,500 beggars during the current year, he added.
