Construction on Peshawar Road underpasses accelerates, 80pc structural work completed

RAWALPINDI, Nov 04 (APP): Civil works on two major underpasses along Peshawar Road, located at Qasim Market and Charing Cross, have achieved 80 percent completion as part of the Punjab government’s mega infrastructure project to establish a fully signal-free corridor across Rawalpindi.
According to latest project updates, heavy construction machinery and technical crews are executing round-the-clock operations to finish the remaining 20 percent of infrastructure work within days. Under the explicit directives of Commissioner Rawalpindi, the work has been accelerated. The project is expected to be completed and open to traffic in December.
According to a senior official at Punjab Highways, the engineering protocols are being strictly enforced at both underpass sites, including underground power cable relocations, advanced drainage systems, and stormwater runoff networks to prevent urban flooding.
To facilitate uninterrupted construction, City Traffic Police Rawalpindi has implemented a comprehensive traffic diversion plan.
A spokesman for the traffic police informed APP that commuters traveling from Kachehri Chowk via Mall Road toward Peshawar Road are being re-routed onto an alternative road directly toward Qasim Market. Conversely, traffic coming from the Peshawar side is being routed onto dedicated service lanes before reconnecting with the main Peshawar Road artery.
The Peshawar Road twin-underpass project forms the final major phase of Rawalpindi’s signal-free transit network. The mega project follows the completed two-way GPO Chowk underpass and the multi-tier expansion at Marka-e-Haq Square (Kachehri Chowk), which features two flyovers and two underpasses seamlessly connecting GT Road, Murree Road, and Ammar Chowk.
Upon the functional integration of the Qasim Market and Charing Cross underpasses, Rawalpindi’s transit artery will become almost entirely signal-free.
