LAHORE, Aug 18 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has reviewed progress on clean drinking water projects across the province and directed the authorities to expedite their completion to ensure the provision of safe drinking water to the people.
Chairing the sixth consecutive meeting on the provision of clean water, here on Tuesday, the CM reviewed detailed progress on projects in Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Rajanpur, Talagang, Attock, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Rahim Yar Khan and Chakwal.
The meeting was informed that 2,778 new water filtration plants were being established in nine districts. The CM also expressed satisfaction over water bottling projects in Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Khushab and Dera Ghazi Khan.
Officials briefed the meeting that each water bottling point was providing 2,500 bottles of drinking water to the public daily, while each bottling plant had the capacity to produce 5,000 litres of clean water per hour. Small dams were also being constructed in the Potohar region.
Under Cluster-I, 570 of the 702 water filtration plants planned in Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan had been completed. The project also included 95 reverse osmosis (RO) and 52 ultrafiltration (UF) plants in areas with saline groundwater.
Under Cluster-V, 902 of 1,180 filtration plants had been completed in Talagang, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Attock, Murree and Chakwal. The project also included 231 RO plants in saline-water areas of the six districts.
In Cluster-XIV, 749 of 892 sites in Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar had been completed. The government was also installing 130 RO plants, 64 UF plants and multimedia filtration plants in areas with saline groundwater.
The meeting was further informed that 368 of 482 sites had been completed in Chishtian, Minchinabad, Haroonabad and Fort Abbas, while 351 of 410 sites had been completed in Bahawalpur, Yazman, Ahmedpur East and Hasilpur.
The CM directed the authorities to take measures for the rehabilitation of 736 non-functional water filtration plants and stressed timely completion of all ongoing projects. “Access to clean water is a basic right of every individual,” CM Maryam Nawaz said, directing the authorities to ensure that the projects were completed without delay.
