Founded in the 8th century CE, the historic fort was placed on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List in 2004. Abandoned by the Mirs of Hunza in 1945, it was restored with support from the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and now serves as a museum managed by the Baltit Heritage Trust.
