Playback singer Akhlaq Ahmed remembered

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP):Famous playback singer Akhlaq Ahmed was remembered on his birth anniversary on Wednesday.
Born on May 8, 1946 in Delhi, Akhlaq Ahmed started as a stage singer in the 1960s in Karachi, when he was a member of a famous singing group with two other legendary artists Masood Rana and Nadeem. Akhlaq Ahmad was the third generation of top male playback singers in Pakistan film industry.
He struggled many years but shined in the 1970s as playback singer. “Sona na Chandi na koi Mehal” in film Bandish (1980) and “Sawan Aye Sawan jaye” in Chahat (1974), “Ae Dil, Apna Dard Chhupa Kar, Geet Khushi Kay Gaye Ja”‘ in film Pehchan (1975) and “Main Hun, Rastey Ka Pathar, Hay Naseeb Mera Thokar” in film  Rastay Ka Pathar (1976) were some his most super hit songs. His song tally is under hundred songs.
Akhlaq Ahmad suffered with a deadly disease of blood cancer and died on August 4, 1999 at London. His last film as a playback singer was Director Sangeeta’s Nikah (1998).

Rain along with thunderstorm predicted for weekend

LAHORE, May 08 (APP):The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted another rain along with dust-storm and thunderstorm for this week-end in most parts of the country including city, while day temperatures are likely to increase due to high pressure in the upper atmosphere in most parts of the country particularly in southern half of the country.
According to a spokesman for the PMD, a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country on May 10 and likely to grip upper parts on the next day.
Under the influence of the weather system, day temperatures are likely to remain 3-5°C above normal till Friday. Rain-dust-storm/thunderstorm is expected in Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Pakpattan and Sahiwal from 10th of May to 12th. While, in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Khanpur, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar on May 10-11. Hailstorm is also expected at isolated places during the period.
Farmers are advised to manage watering of crops and wheat harvesting accordingly, general public is advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and windstorm/hailstorm and lightning may affect daily routines, standing crops, loose structures like electric poles, vehicles and solar panels etc during the period, the spokesman added.

Rupee gains 01 paisa against US dollar

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP): Pakistani Rupee on Tuesday gained 01 paisa against the US dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs 278.10 against the previous day’s closing of Rs 278.11.

According to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the dollar in the open market, however, stood at Rs 277.00 and Rs 279.70 respectively.

The price of the Euro decreased by 49 paisa and closed at Rs 298.62 against the last-day closing of Rs 299.11, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The Japanese Yen remained shed 01 paisa and was traded at Rs.1.79 against Rs 1.80, whereas an decrease of Rs 1.77 was witnessed in the exchange rate of the British Pound, which was traded at Rs 346.81 compared to the last closing of Rs 348.58.

The Emirates Dirham and Saudi Riyal remained stable at Rs 75.71 and Rs.74.15 respectively.

Pak-Uzbekistan to start work on trade corridor with Afghanistan: Uzbek Minister

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP):Uzbek Deputy Minister for Transport and Aviation, Jasurbek Choriev has said that Pakistan and Uzbekistan have decided to start work on the trilateral trade corridor with Afghanistan, which is of great importance in regional economic integration.
Including Afghanistan, all three parties are willing to complete this trade corridor and its completion will increase regional trade and boost economic activities in the regional countries, Jasurbek Choriev said this at the Tashkent International Investment Forum (TIIF) while talking to APP.
The minister said that Pakistan was our foremost priority economic partner as well in the recent future, with which we are working in many spheres at the economic and trade level.
He said that the Pakistan-Uzbekistan partnership is of great importance in regional economic and trade integration and Uzbekistan considers Pakistan will have a significant partner in this regard.
The Minister said that Uzbekistan is the central country of Central Asia and similarly, Pakistan is also a Geo-Strategically important country of South Asia located in the neighbouring Central Asia.
He said that air, rail and road connectivity between Pakistan and Uzbekistan is essential to increase bilateral trade between the two countries.
Jasurbek Choriev said that the direct flight between Pakistan and Uzbekistan will start in October this year 2024.
He said that Pakistan and Uzbekistan have a central role in global and regional trade and the strategic partnership of the two countries can usher in a new era of economic prosperity in the region.
Replying to a question,he said that the economic and trade relations between the two countries started from the historic Silk route and both countries are determined to revive the old Silk route.
Great Silk Road is a historical trade artery between East and West, which is of great cultural, economic and geopolitical importance, he said.
Meanwhile highlighting the significance of Tashkent International Investment Forum, the Minister said that in TIIF, international experts and representatives of government agencies explored opportunities to expand ties, economic cooperation and cultural exchange along the ancient routes of the Silk Road.
First and foremost, “we think about the economy and new transportation routes that will benefit everyone, not only Uzbekistan, and here respect for the law and culture of other countries plays a big role,Jasurbek Choriev said.
He said that in this forum participants discussed ways to revive this ancient route in the modern era, expand trade and economic ties, and promote intercultural dialog between countries once linked by the Silk Road.
“We need to take concrete steps to realize the concept of the New Silk Road -ensuring safe and efficient transport corridors, developing logistics infrastructure and strengthening cooperation between the states of the region” he said.

ETPB recovers Rs 38B in properties, Rs 600M in dues

ISLAMABAD, May 8 (APP): Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) has efficiently reclaimed properties worth Rs 38 billion and retrieved outstanding dues a totaling of Rs 600 million from defaulters since December 2023, to date, under the guidance of chairman Arshad Farid Khan.

According to ETPB spokesman, the special teams, constituted by the board chairman, have successfully recovered Trust Board’s land and commercial properties in various locations, including Pakpattan, Mahant Darshan, Okara, Sahiwal, Dipalpur, Hasan Abdal, Karachi, and Lahore.

In Nankana Sahib, he said security personnel and other staff were deployed to conduct an operation against the land grabber mafia. As a result, thousands of acres of land were reclaimed, and illegal constructions were demolished.

Additionally, thousands of kanals of departmental land, previously withheld due to pending cases, reached resolution, thereby incorporating them into the trust pool.

The revenue has been boosted to Rs 429 million through the modernization of the billing system for urban properties. Rigorous monitoring has led to the issuance of WhatsApp numbers to deter any forms of corruption and bribery, he added.

11 Hajj flights carrying 2,160 Pakistani pilgrims to land in Madinah on Thursday

MADINAH AL MUNAWARA, May 8 (APP): Marking the launch of a regular month-long pre-Hajj flight operation, 11 flights are scheduled to arrive in Madinah on Thursday from five major cities from Pakistan, carrying approximately 2,160 intending Hajj pilgrims.
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and requires every adult Muslim to undertake the journey to the holy Islamic sites in Makkah at least once in their lifetime, if they are financially and physically able.
These flights will transport pilgrims from Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Peshawar to the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport (Madinah Airport), beginning a massive influx of devotees from Pakistan and other parts of the world.
Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Nawaf bin Saeed Ahmad Al-Malkiy will visit Islamabad and Karachi airports, operated under the Road to Makkah initiative, to bid farewell to Pakistani Hajj pilgrims bound for the holy land. The pilgrims will be received by authorities concerned at the Pakistan Consulate General and the Hajj Mission of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The pre-Hajj flight operation, which will continue until June 10, will facilitate the arrival of thousands of pilgrims in the holy city. Five airlines – Pakistan International Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Airblue, Serene Air, and Air Sial – will operate 259 sorties to transport around 68,000 intending pilgrims from eight major cities of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Quetta, Sialkot, and Sukkur, to Jeddah and Madinah under the government scheme.
According to a flight schedule, the first flight, PF754 (AirSial), is scheduled to depart for Madinah at 01:45 am from Karachi, carrying around 150 intending Hajj pilgrims. The last Hajj flight, SV3727 (Saudi Airlines), will depart on June 10 from Islamabad to Jeddah, with 380 passengers onboard.
During the first 15 days, all flights will operate from various cities of Pakistan to Madinah until May 23, and afterwards, they will land at the King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah, until the completion of the pre-Hajj flight operation.This year, around 179,210 Pakistanis will perform Hajj under both government and private schemes, for which a month-long pre-Hajj flight operation is scheduled to commence on May 9 for airlifting pilgrims to the sacred places of Makkah al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawarah in the Kingdom. Out of 179,210 pilgrims, 89,605 each will embark on the holy journey under government and private schemes, while a quota of 25,000 and 44,802 pilgrims, respectively, has been allocated for sponsorship schemes.”

Leading Pakistani media group publishes 60th episode of BRI column

BEIJING, May 8 (APP): On the occasion of the publication of the 60th episode of BRI Column by one of Pakistan’s leading media group, congratulatory and appreciation messages from bilateral dignitaries have been published.

The felicitation comes from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, and Consuls General of China in Lahore & Karachi Zhao
Shiren and Yang Yundong.

“I am glad to hear that the 60th episode of the Belt and Road Initiative Column will be published on the Nawa-i-Waqt,” Jiang Zaidong, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan wrote in his congratulatory message.

It was further introduced in the message that more than 150 countries and 30 international organizations have signed more than 200 BRl cooperation documents, creating more than 3000 cooperation projects and attracting nearly 1 trillion US dollars of investment. The BRl has truly become the world’s broadest-based and largest platform for international cooperation, the message read.

In particular, it was mentioned that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has now become the earliest, broadest and most effective all-element cooperation project under the BRl, and has become a vivid interpretation of the all-weather friendship between China and Pakistan. Over the past 11 years, CPEC has brought a total of US $25.4 billion in direct investment, 236000 jobs, 510km of highways, more than 8000 megawatts of electricity and 886km of core transmission network, generating a strong impetus to Pakistan’s economic and social development, and bringing real benefits to the local people, it was stressed by the Ambassador.

Zhao Shiren, Consul General of China in Lahore, said in his message : “lt is foreseeable that the next phase of the Belt and Road development will be more open, inclusive and collaborative and more focused on digital, innovative and green development to promote the modernization of the world.

Yang Yundong, Consul General of China in Karachi wrote, over the past 11 years, with efforts from all parties, Belt and Road cooperation has extended from the Eurasian continent to Africa and Latin America. From 2013 to 2022, the total import and export volume between China and the countries involved in the BRl accumulated to $19.1 trillion USD, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4%. Bilateral investment stood at $380 billion USD, that exceeded Chinese outbound direct investment surpassing $240 billion USD.

According to Chief Operating Officer of Nawa-e-Waqt Lt Col (Retd) Sayed Ahmad Nadeem Qadri, the group is publishing research based articles in Sunday magazine on the first Sunday of every month under the title From Silk Road and Belt & Road to CPEC. The 60th episode marks the completion of five years continuous work.

Special Correspondent of the media group told China Economic Net the BRI Column will continue as BRI construction progresses. The BRI corridors have been expanded to the digital area. It is a revolution that connects global regions, he said.

Pakistan beat Canada 5-4 to become a strong final contender

ISLAMABAD, May 08 (APP): Pakistan hockey team on Wednesday defeated Canada 5-4 in their fourth pool match to solidify their position to earn a final spot in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, underway in Ipoh, Malaysia.

With the win, Pakistan has accumulated 10 points in four matches and is now a strong contender for the title.

According to information made available here by Pakistan Hockey Federation, Canada took early lead in the 5th minute with a goal from Sean Davis and another in the 17th minute from Harbir Sidhu. Pakistan’s Abubakar Mahmood scored two goals in the 28th and 29th minutes, levelling the score.

After halftime, experienced goalkeeper Abdullah Ashfaq Khan took over the Pakistani goalpost. Arshad Liaqat, Rana Waheed Ashraf and Ghazanfar Ali scored goals in the 36th, 44th, and 45th minutes, respectively, solidifying Pakistan’s lead.

Canada’s Sean Davis scored a field goal in the 45th minute, and Avijot Butter scored another field goal in the 50th minute, reducing Canada’s goal deficit. However, Pakistan emerged victorious in the end.

Six teams are participating in the event, including hosts Malaysia, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, and Canada. Pakistan will play their fifth and final pool match against New Zealand on Friday.

Wheat procurement drive launched in KP

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 08 (APP):Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur on Wednesday inaugurated wheat procurement drive in the province.
The CM launched the province-wide process during his visit to the procurement center, aimed at purchasing three million metric tons of wheat from local farmers. Accompanied by Provincial Food Minister Zahoor Shah Turu, the chief minister was also briefed about wheat procurement and its storage-related matters.
As part of procurement process, he said that 40,000 metric tons of wheat would be purchased from local farmers in Dera Ismail Khan. He said government is committed to the welfare of farmers and priority was being given to provision of facilities to them.
He emphasized that transparency and quality assurance as core principles of the procurement process and in this regard effective measures had been made he added. The CM warned strict action would be taken against those elements, if  found involved in corruption or taking bribes.
“Not buying wheat from Pasco resulted in a benefit of Rs 12 billion which would be utilized in the construction and maintenance of warehouses,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction with the ongoing operations relating to wheat procurement, Gandapur commended the efforts of the team.
