11,800 suspects arrested for power theft

LAHORE, May 01 (APP):In a crackdown initiated by police against electricity thieves, more than 12,000 cases of electricity theft have been registered this year, resulting in the arrest
of over 11,800 suspects.
A police spokesperson said on Wednesday that in Iqbal Town Division, 1,720 suspects were
apprehended, in Saddar Division 2,149, in Cantt Division 3,480, in Model Town Division 1,782, in City Division 2,020, and in Civil Lines Division 705 suspects were arrested.
Capital City Police Officer Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana affirmed that an uncompromising crackdown against electricity thieves was underway in the provincial capital. He emphasized that relevant authorities were being fully supported to curb electricity theft.
The CCPO stated that individuals involved in electricity theft did not deserve any leniency as they were causing financial losses to the national exchequer.

Famous playwright, actor Kamal Rizvi remembered

ISLAMABAD, May 01 (APP):Famous playwright and actor Syed Kamal Ahmed Rizvi was remembered on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday.
He was born in Bihar, in 1930 and did his BA in Patna. In 1951, after the partition of the subcontinent, he migrated to Pakistan. Initially, he spent some time in Karachi and then shifted to Lahore where his penchant for artistic pursuits endeared him to the artist community.
He rubbed shoulders with many literary luminaries, including writer Sadat Hasan Manto.
Kamal Rizvi translated several English books into Urdu and wrote for magazines. In the late 1950s, he tried his hand at theatre and started writing plays, both original and adaptations. Some of his popular stage and TV plays are Badshahat Ka Khatma, Julius Caesar, Hum Sub Pagal Hain, and Bulaqi Badzaat.
In 1965, when Lahore’s television station became operational, he wrote and starred in the satirical drama series Alif Noon. The drama assumed iconic significance as it, by humourous and meaningful situations, exposed hypocrisies and double standards that existed in society.
He played the role of the cunning and scheming Allan in the play, while the affable Rafi Khawar played the part of his friend Nanha, who is opposed to Allan but always falls for his cunningness.
The government of Pakistan had given him the Pride of Performance Award in 1989.

Balochistan govt takes effective measures for welfare of labours : Sarfraz Bugti

QUETTA, May 01 (APP):Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti on Wednesday said that the government is taking effective measures for the welfare of labourers and would ensure all basic facilities to the productive segment of society.
In a message on the occasion of Labour Day, he said that workers are playing a key role in the development of the society and country.
The Chief Minister said it was very important to provide technical education to the working class to get good employment opportunities in the global labour market as the demand for manpower equipped with technical skills is very high in the world.
He said the government has determined to provide the best educational facility to the children of labourers and the students from the downtrodden section of the society would be awarded scholarships every year.
Sarfraz Bugti said that the government has already announced to enrol 400 children of labourers from Balochistan in the best higher educational institution across the country in the first phase of the programme.
In the next phase, around 1000 children of workers would be provided quality education on a scholarship basis in the best institutions across the country.
Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti would not allow the exploitation of workers and ensure all facilities to marginalized communities and bring to justice those who exploit workers.
Sarfraz Bugti said the government has awarded the status of labourers of fishermen of Gwadar to benefit them at every stage.

BISE Nawabshah SSC examination to start from 2 May

NAWABSHAH, May 01 (APP):Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Shaheed Benazirabad Examinations Supervisor Abdul Jabbar Arain has announced that the annual examinations of classes 9th  and 10th  on behalf of the education board would start on 2nd May.
For the appointment of invigilators and staff at the centers, other necessary arrangements including prevention of duplication have been completed.
The declaration further states that a total of 157 examination centers have been established in the division to take the examinations of the 9th and 20th standards. 21 vigilance teams have also been formed.
The announcement further states that during the exams, 97,000 candidates of classes 9 and 10 will appear in the first shift from 9 am to 12 pm and the second shift from 2 pm to 5 pm.
In this regard, the candidates have been advised to reach the examination centers on time and bring the original admit slip and admit card along with them, otherwise they will not be allowed to appear in the examination.
The statement further informed that Section 144 has been enforced in all examination centers to prevent cheating and avoid any untoward incident during the examinations.

SRB tax collection surges 29% to Rs 185.2 billion

KARACHI, May 01 (APP):Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) has collected Rs185.2 billion during the first nine months of fiscal year 2023-24 depicting an increase of 29 percent over the corresponding period of last year.
Chairman SRB Wasif Memon called on Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday and briefed him about the revenue collections of the SRB, said a statement issued here.
The Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) collected a record revenue of Rs185.2 billion during the first nine months of the fiscal year 2023-24 while in the corresponding period of the previous financial year 2022-23, the tax collection stood at Rs143.3 billion, it said adding that the achievement signified a year-on-year growth of  29 percent.
The CM said at the occasion that despite encountering various challenges, including the broader economic slowdown, the
SRB has demonstrated resilience and efficiency in revenue collection.
The monthly tax collection by SRB during April 2024 has remained Rs18.8 billion which shows 23 percent growth as compared to tax collection of Rs15.2 billion in April 2023, it said.

China’s Chang’e-6 lunar probe ready for launch after final rehearsal

BEIJING, May 1 (APP):China’s Chang’e-6 lunar probe is ready to be launched after it completed a final pre-launch rehearsal on Wednesday.
The Chang’e-6 lunar probe and Long March-5 Y8 carrier rocket were transferred to the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the southern province of Hainan last week, CGTN reported.
Functional checks, joint test work, and propellant filling will be carried out before the launch.
After the lunar probe and carrier rocket arrived at the launch site in January and March, respectively, the assembly, testing, and other preparations were successfully completed.
The probe is set to collect samples from the far side of the moon in a mission that will be the first of its kind in human history.
The Chang’e-7 is scheduled to be launched around 2026, and Chang’e-8 around 2028.
Chang’e-7 and Chang’e-8 will form the basic model for a lunar research station to carry out further exploration of the lunar environment, according to CNSA.

IIUI marks Labor Day: Panel discussion on right to education vs. Child Labor held

ISLAMABAD, May 01 (APP):Department of Teacher Education in collaboration with Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized a panel discussion to mark the Labor day in which panelists and participants discussed the critical themes surrounding the rights of children to education and the urgent need to address the issue of child labor.
Dr. Shamsa Aziz, Chairperson Department of Teacher Education briefed about the main idea behind arranging the panel discussion. The Panelists included Dr. Tabassum Naz Director Schools Federal Directorate of Education, Islamabad, Ms. Nazneen Zehra Deputy Director (Planning) Basic Education Community Schools, Islamabad, Ms. Shumaila Aslam Principal Ghori Career School, Islamabad, Ms. Tabassum Shairwani Khan PhD Education Scholar, IIUI and Ms. Sana Naseer BECS School. The panel was moderated by Dr. Fouzia Ajmal.
Under the theme “Empowering Futures: Right to Education vs. Child Labour,” the discussion encompassed a wide range of topics, each shedding light on different dimensions of the issue.
The panel unanimously agreed on the significance of education as a fundamental right for every child. They emphasized that access to education not only empowers individuals but also plays a vital role in shaping a prosperous society.
Addressing the underlying socio-economic factors contributing to child labor was another focal point of the discussion, the panelists stressed the need for holistic approaches that tackle poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunities, which often force children into labor.
Panelists highlighted the pivotal role of teachers in eradicating child labor and promoting education. They emphasized the role of educators in creating inclusive and supportive learning environments that encourage children to stay in school and pursue their dreams.
The main takeaways of the discourse included community involvement as a crucial factor in combating child labor.
The panelists highlighted the importance of community partnerships and grassroots initiatives in identifying at-risk children and providing them with educational opportunities.
According to the organizing departments, the panel discussion served as a platform for stakeholders from academia, government, and civil society to exchange ideas, share best practices, and chart a course of action towards ensuring every child’s right to education.
The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sarwar, Dean of the Faculty of Education, IIUI, commended the efforts of the Department of Teacher Education, Dr. Fouzia Ajmal, Focal Person of the activity and students’ organizers (and reiterated the university’s commitment for promoting education as a tool for social transformation.

This event was held in auditorium Fatima tuz Zahra block (Female Campus) IIUI which was attended by female students and faculty members of the department.

Interior Minister visits Coast Guards HQ, lauds PCG performance

KARACHI, May 01 (APP):Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited Pakistan Coast Guards (PCG) Headquarters here on Wednesday. The Director General Pakistan Coast Guards Brigadier Ghulam Abass  received the Minister on his arrival at the Headquarters.
Interior Minister laid floral wreath at martyrs monument and presented solute to the martyrs for their supreme sacrifice for the defence of the motherland.
The Interior Minister was briefed on the professional affairs of Pakistan Coast Guards, in which the efforts to fulfill the responsibilities of Coast Guards and prevent all kinds of smuggling, especially anti-narcotics activities.
Mohsin Naqvi was informed about the professional training of Pakistan Coast Guards and the measures taken to prevent smuggling and the details of the seized drugs, alcohol and other general items, including the process of burning the seized drugs.
The Federal Minister while appreciating the professional performance of the institution, the high determination, courage and efforts of the officers and jawans of the Coast Guards, said Pakistan Coast Guards, is the only one that performs its duties simultaneously on land and sea.  This is a force which has an important role not only in peace time but also in any difficult and war situation, Naqvi said.
He expressed best wishes for the Pakistan Coast Guards by assuring the provision of all possible support and resources to make it more active and strong.

AIOU commences MA,MSc final exams from May 13

ISLAMABAD, May 01 (APP):Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has announced the examination schedule of M.A, M.Sc, M.Com, MBA/MPA (Commonwealth of Learning), MLIS, M.Ed and Postgraduate programs offered in semester autumn 2023.
These examinations will start on May 13 and will continue till June 13, said a press release on Wednesday.
Date sheet is uploaded on the university website (www.aiou.edu.pk) and roll number slips are uploaded to students’ CMS portals.
Vice Chancellor, AIOU, Prof Dr. Nasir Mahmood, has instructed the examinations department to ensure transparency and provide all necessary facilities to the students during the examinations. Moreover, special teams will conduct surprise visits to the exam centres.
