0
ISLAMABAD, Dec 19 (APP): The District & Sessions Court of Islamabad on Friday approved the post-arrest bail for YouTuber Sohrab Barkat in a case related to disputed videos and tweets, ordering his release on surety bonds of Rs100,000.
Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah heard the bail application and announced the order after arguments from both sides. The court directed that Sohrab Barkat be released once he submits surety bonds worth Rs100,000.
During the hearing, defence lawyers told the court that the allegations against the accused are still at the investigation stage. They argued that further physical remand was not required and that the accused had already cooperated with the investigation. The court considered the submissions and granted bail after arrest.
Sohrab Barkat was arrested in a case registered by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). The agency filed the case over content shared on social media, including videos and tweets described as disputed by the investigators.
The case relates to material circulated on online platforms that led to legal action under cyber crime laws. The investigation by the NCCIA is ongoing, and the agency is reviewing the content and related digital records.
The court order allows the accused to remain free during the investigation process, subject to the conditions of bail. Further proceedings in the case will continue as the investigation moves forward.

All minorities fully safe, enjoy equal rights in Pakistan: State Minister

0
FAISALABAD, Dec 19 (APP): Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Kesso Mal Kheeal Das on Friday said that all minorities in Pakistan were fully safe and enjoy equal constitutional rights.
He joined the Christian community in Faisalabad during a Christmas ceremony to share festive celebrations and reaffirm the government’s commitment to religious harmony.
Addressing the gathering, the state minister said that the government was taking practical steps to promote interfaith harmony, tolerance and brotherhood.
The festivals like Christmas reflected the reality that Pakistan was a country where followers of all religions freely observed their religious rituals with respect, dignity and security, he added.
He said that this was his first visit to Faisalabad and he was especially pleased to be there to celebrate Christmas, expressing gratitude to the Christian community for their warm welcome.
He said that people belonging to different faiths in Pakistan celebrated their festivals with enthusiasm, freedom and protection, which was clear evidence that the country stood as a shining example of religious tolerance and mutual respect.
Referring to a recent incident in India, the state minister strongly condemned the reported humiliation of a Muslim woman in Bihar, calling it extremely regrettable and deplorable.
He said that incidents of oppression and religious intolerance against minorities particularly Muslims were on the rise in India whereas in Pakistan minorities were not only protected but are also treated with dignity and respect.
He said that policies of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had turned India into an enemy of minorities and humanity while Pakistan’s leadership followed a completely different path.
He said, “Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally participates in religious festivals of minorities and promotes love, tolerance and goodwill through his conduct, sending a strong message of unity.”
He said that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had placed protection of minority rights among her top priorities and regularly celebrated festivals such as Christmas and Diwali with minority communities, making them feel valued as equal citizens. The chief minister also ensured that minorities across the province feel safe, dignified and confident, he added.
Extending Christmas greetings to the Christian community on behalf of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the state minister said, “Islam does not teach hatred toward any religion but promotes respect, love, peace and brotherhood. The prime minister has effectively exposed the extremist mindset of the Modi government at international forums.”
Paying tribute to Pakistan Army, Kesso Mal Kheeal Das said that the armed forces had always played a vital role in the defense and peace of the country.
He urged the Christian community to offer special prayers in churches for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for peace and security of the homeland.
He said that interfaith harmony was the foundation of stability, development and prosperity in any society, adding that Pakistan was a beautiful bouquet of different religions where Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and followers of other faiths had lived together for centuries.
The state minister said, “Christmas reminds humanity that the values of love, peace and tolerance are universal and not confined to any single religion. Pakistan was created in the name of Kalima Tayyabah and its Constitution guarantees equal rights to all minorities,”
He assured that the issues faced by minority communities would be addressed on priority basis and government was taking serious and practical measures in this regard.
He further cited the example of Kartarpur Gurdwara, saying that despite flooding during previous monsoon seasons, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz personally ensured emergency measures to drain out water, demonstrating the government’s firm commitment to the protection and respect of minority religious sites.
The state minister also cut a Christmas cake with members of the Christian community and extended warm greetings on the occasion.
Senior Vice President PML-N Punjab Minority Wing Shokat Javed Vikki, Mansoor Ahmed Randhawa, Fayaz Gondal and a large number of Christian community members were also present in the ceremony.

PIDE holds IMF’s dialogue on Pakistan’s economic path after EFF second review

0
ISLAMABAD, Dec 19 (APP):The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) here on Friday convened a policy session on the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Extended Fund Facility (EFF), focusing on the successful completion of the second review.
The session was delivered by Mahir Binici, Resident Representative of the IMF in Pakistan, marking his first official visit to PIDE, a news release said.
The event brought together faculty members, researchers, students, and policy professionals for an in-depth exchange on Pakistan’s macroeconomic trajectory and reform priorities.
The session was formally inaugurated by Dr Karim Khan, Dean of Academics at PIDE, who emphasized the importance of informed, evidence-based policy dialogue in addressing Pakistan’s economic challenges.
Highlighting PIDE’s role as a platform for rigorous research and policy engagement, Dr Khan outlined the core objectives
of the IMF-supported program, including fiscal sustainability through achieving a primary balance, maintaining a sustainable debt-to-GDP ratio, strengthening macroeconomic prudence, enhancing climate resilience in light of Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate shocks, and reinforcing social protection mechanisms.
In his presentation, Mahir Binici provided a comprehensive overview of the completion of the second review under Pakistan’s IMF Extended Fund Facility, approved on December 8, 2025.
He noted that the 2024 EFF has been designed by incorporating lessons from previous arrangements, with a stronger emphasis on building economic resilience and supporting sustainable growth.
The presentation covered key elements of the program, including macroeconomic stabilization, fiscal consolidation and revenue mobilization, inflation dynamics, monetary policy stance, and developments in the external sector and foreign exchange market.
While acknowledging recent improvements in economic indicators, Binici cautioned that macroeconomic vulnerabilities persist, underscoring the need for continued and credible reform efforts.
Highlighting progress under the program, Binici pointed to reductions in external imbalances, improved functioning of the foreign exchange market, and a gradual easing of pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
He stressed that these stabilization gains must be preserved through policy continuity, discipline, and consistency to ensure long-term durability.
On fiscal policy, he underscored the importance of consolidation to ensure debt sustainability, identifying tax base broadening, stronger tax administration, and rationalization of untargeted subsidies as key reform priorities necessary to create space for development spending and social protection.
Addressing inflation and monetary policy, Binici acknowledged the adverse impact of high inflation on households and emphasized the role of a tight and credible monetary policy framework in restoring price stability.
He highlighted the importance of central bank independence and anchoring inflation expectations as foundations for sustainable economic growth.
On the external sector, he reiterated the value of a market-determined exchange rate in absorbing external shocks, enhancing export competitiveness, and supporting foreign exchange reserve accumulation.
Binici also emphasized that structural reforms remain central to the IMF-supported program, particularly in the energy sector, state-owned enterprises, and governance and transparency frameworks.
He noted that these reforms are critical not only for macroeconomic stabilization but also for strengthening long-term economic resilience.
Recognizing the social costs associated with adjustment measures, he stressed the importance of targeted social safety nets to protect vulnerable segments of society from the impact of inflation and reforms.
Concluding his remarks, Binici underscored the importance of strong domestic ownership and consistent implementation of reforms for the success of the program, noting that nationally driven and well-communicated reforms help build investor confidence and support durable growth.
He also appreciated PIDE’s role in facilitating constructive engagement between academia and policymakers, emphasizing that research-driven analysis and informed debate are essential for effective economic policymaking.
The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, reflecting strong academic and policy interest in Pakistan’s ongoing engagement with the IMF.

NHA revenue surges 63% amid reforms, Minister tells Senate panel

ISLAMABAD, Dec 19 (APP): Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan informed the Senate Standing Committee on Communications on Friday that the National Highway Authority (NHA) has recorded a 63 percent increase in revenue, attributing the growth to wide-ranging reforms and improved management practices.

NHA revenue surges 63% amid reforms, Minister tells Senate panel

Briefing the committee on ongoing and planned development works, the minister highlighted progress on motorways, highways, service areas, and other road infrastructure projects. He said major motorway and highway schemes are currently being executed across the country to strengthen connectivity and support economic activity.

The meeting, chaired by Senator Pervaiz Rashid, was held in Islamabad, where the minister presented a comprehensive overview of the NHA’s performance and future plans.

The minister told the committee that when he assumed office in 2024, NHA’s revenue stood at Rs66.8 billion, a figure that had remained stagnant for the previous six years. He said that since 2024, NHA has generated Rs108.9 billion, reflecting a 63 percent increase in revenue. He expressed confidence that by the time he leaves office, NHA’s revenue will be raised to between Rs400 and Rs500 billion, and that in the next fiscal year the authority will generate more income than allocations received under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
Abdul Aleem Khan said the increase in revenue was made possible through reforms including M-Tag implementation, axle load control and transparent toll plaza management. Responding to criticism that NHA was being run like a housing society, he said he had no regrets as these measures had brought billions of rupees in benefit to the national exchequer.
The minister further informed the committee that NHA plans to launch an air ambulance service by 2026. He said the helicopter-based service would ensure rapid emergency response on highways and motorways, enabling accident victims to be transported quickly to nearby hospitals
He said proper service areas with washrooms and basic facilities are being developed at intervals of 20 to 25 kilometers on motorways, and that all these initiatives will be financed through NHA’s own revenue without seeking grants from the government or any other institution.
He said work has already started on the Mansehra–Kaghan Highway, while the PC-I of the Sukkur–Hyderabad Motorway has been approved and the project will be executed in five different sections. He added that the Hyderabad–Karachi Motorway is being linked with Karachi Port to help reduce accidents and improve traffic management, and that funds for the project are already available.
Aleem Khan said the Sukkur–Hyderabad and Hyderabad–Karachi motorways have been accorded top priority on the directives of Prime Minister owing to their strategic significance.
Highlighting efforts to promote tourism, Abdul Aleem Khan said discussions are underway with the governments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to transfer various mountainous roads to NHA so that quality infrastructure can be developed to facilitate tourists.
He also announced that the Sialkot–Rawalpindi project will be upgraded from a four-lane to a six-lane motorway.
The minister said the new alignment will reduce the Lahore–Islamabad distance by about 100 kilometers, cutting travel time from three-and-a-half hours to nearly two-and-a-half hours. This, he added, will lead to significant savings in fuel consumption, reduced environmental impact and improved traffic flow.
Aleem Khan said the project will benefit major population centers including Gujranwala, Kharian, Gujar Khan and Jhelum, and will serve as a vital economic
He said the PC-I of the Sukkur–Hyderabad Motorway has been approved, while the 69-kilometer Sialkot–Kharian Motorway has been forwarded by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) to ECNEC for approval. He added that land acquisition, mines and mineral issues related to the 153-kilometer Chitral–Shandur Highway have been resolved.
The committee was also informed that the Murree–Islamabad Expressway, Lyari Expressway and Thokar Niaz Baig to Lahore Ring Road have been upgraded. Feasibility studies of several major projects, including Kharian–Rawalpindi (117 km), Sialkot–Kharian (69 km), Sukkur–Hyderabad (306 km) and Hyderabad–Karachi (160 km), have been completed.
The minister said that the Lahore–Kharian–Rawalpindi motorway will reduce the distance by about 100 kilometers, resulting in fuel savings and smoother traffic flow. He added that new service areas have been established on the Murree Expressway, where no such facilities existed previously.
During the meeting, Senator Hidayatullah raised concerns regarding the Chakdara–Timergara Road and Shandur Road, particularly about heavy traffic and frequent accidents on the first section of the project. The minister assured the committee that the issue would be addressed.
The committee also discussed matters related to an on going project and Park View society. Minister explained that the project in question was already completed in the year 2021.
On the other hand, it is pertinent to mention that Park View Society is located approximately 7.5 kilometers away from the ongoing project—the starting point of the project—and around 10.5 kilometers away from the Lahore Ring Road. Therefore, no proximity-based linkage exists between the project’s alignment and the mentioned housing society.
Chairman of the committee Senator Pervaiz Rashid expressed satisfaction over the minister’s briefing, stating that the committee’s concerns regarding road projects had been adequately addressed. However, a heated exchange of words occurred between Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, following which, on the chairman’s request, the minister tendered an apology. The remaining agenda items were deferred to the next meeting.
The meeting was attended by Senators Dost Ali Jeesar, Jam Saifullah Khan, Hidayatullah Khan, Bilal Ahmed Mandokhail and Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, along with the Federal Minister for Communications, Secretary Communications and other senior officials of the Ministry of Communications.
