DC targets overpricing vendors

ISLAMABAD, Jun 6 (APP):Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, has directed the Magistrate of Saddar Zone, Mir Yamin, to review the overpricing of vegetables, fruits, and bread in the surroundings of Thana Sangjani.
During the inspection, the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration teams found several shopkeepers and vendors violating government-set rates. Immediate legal action was taken against those not adhering to the official prices, said the ICT Administration’s spokesman.
Similarly, a vegetable vendor was arrested for selling products at sub-standard and inflated prices, sending a strong message to others in the market.
Additionally, the owners of five tanneries were detained for selling naan and roti above the regulated prices of Rs 16 and
20, respectively. These individuals were transferred to Sangjani police station for further legal proceedings.
The district administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that essential food items like roti and naan are sold at government-fixed prices, aiming to provide relief to the community.

Cut in markup to bolster economy, enhance productivity: PBF

LAHORE, Jun 06 (APP):The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) Thursday urged the authorities concerned to ensure a significant cut in markup rate to bolster economy and enhance productivity.
PBF Lahore President Momin Ali Malik told the media here that with decline in the inflation and improvement in external account, the businessmen were expecting a significant cut in the monetary policy framework in the next meeting of Monetary Policy Committee. He argued that tight monetary policy was hurting the economy, so the markup rate would have to be brought down to a single digit. Malik suggested that the government should focus on local as well as foreign investors, and aboard all stakeholders in policy making, besides resolving the genuine problem of the business community. It would definitely ensure economic turnaround in the country, he added.
The president said if the interest rate was reduced considerably, it would boost sustainable economic activities.
He expected a reduction of 250bps in the policy rate, potentially lowering it to 20 per cent. The forecast was underpinned by several favourable economic indicators, suggesting a conducive environment for initiation of reversal in monetary stance, he added.
Momin Ali Malik said that the anticipated rate cut would not only support economic growth but also align with the evolving economic conditions. He said that one of the primary factors supporting the expectation of a rate cut was the downward trajectory of Pakistan’s inflation. Both headline and core inflation figures had shown significant improvement.
The PBF president said the average headline inflation for the first 10 months of current fiscal year had decreased to 25.97 per cent, down from 28.23 per cent during the corresponding period last FY adding on the external front, the current account deficit had shown remarkable improvement during the first 10 months of this fiscal year, narrowing by 95 per cent to $202 million, and the significant reduction had contributed to the stability of the rupee against the dollar.
Malik suggested a considerable reduction in the key policy rate, taking it into single digit, with a view to providing the private sector access to low-cost borrowing.
He called for a reduction in the energy prices for the local industry to stimulate industrial growth further. He also called for ease of doing business, lowering cost of production, a solution to the liquidity crunch through early refund payments, a long-term and consistent energy tariff policy, and a relaxed import policy for industrial raw materials so that industrialization could be promoted and exports could be enhanced.

Cotton factory gutted

FAISALABAD, Jun 06 (APP):Precious material in a cotton factory was reduced to ashes due to fire incident in the area of Millat Town police station.
Rescue 1122 spokesman said here on Thursday that fire erupted in Idrees Cotton Factory situated at Millat Road due to unknown reasons.
The fire engulfed the entire surroundings and burnt the precious cotton material present on the spot.
Receiving information, fire fighters of Rescue 1122 rushed to the spot along with four vehicles and brought the fire under control after hectic efforts of many hours.
However, no loss of life was reported in this incident, he added.

Bugti discusses investment opportunities with S. Korean Ambassador

QUETTA, Jun 06 (APP): Ambassador of South Korea, Park Kijun called on Chief Minister Balochistan, Mir Safraz Bugti here Thursday to discuss investment opportunities and mutual cooperation in various sectors, including tourism, IT, livestock and minerals.

The chief minister extended an invitation to Korean investors to visit Balochistan and explore investment opportunities in the province.

The meeting discussed the potential for investment in Balochistan’s long coastline, fisheries, livestock, minerals and tourism sectors. The chief minister assured the Korean Ambassador that the provincial government would provide a conducive environment and full protection to Korean investors, as well as facilitate their investment endeavors.

The Ambassador expressed interest in investing in various sectors, including tourism, IT, infrastructure, livestock and fisheries and praised the unique culture of Balochistan. The meeting concluded with an agreement to promote mutual cooperation and investment in various sectors, and an exchange of souvenirs.

The chief minister also informed the Ambassador about the provincial government’s plan to provide vocational training to 30,000 youth, enabling them to secure employment opportunities abroad and contribute to the national economy through remittances. The Ambassador appreciated the plan, acknowledging its potential to strengthen the national economy.

The meeting reflected the strong diplomatic relations between Pakistan and South Korea, and the desire to further strengthen trade and economic ties between the two countries.

Officers of NIM visits LDA office

LAHORE, Jun 06 (APP):A delegation of National Institute of Management’s 40th mid-career management course visited Lahore Development Authority (LDA) office on Thursday.
The delegation, welcomed by DG Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Tahir Farooq, was briefed on various initiatives. Additional DG Headquarters provided detailed briefing on working of various sections of LDA to the delegation.
Delegates were briefed on Master Planning, Urban Planning, Town Planning, and other sections. Efforts are under way to make Lahore a livable city as per the vision of Punjab chief minister, the DG LDA told the delegation.
He said that work was continuing on restructuring of LDA in light of Punjab chief minister’s vision while initiatives including anti-smog measures, rooftop gardening, promotion of cycling and greenery are being undertaken.
Tahir further said that work was ongoing on digitising records of LDA schemes, establishing LDA as a paperless entity. Delegates were presented with souvenirs at the conclusion of the visit.

Born on May 27, 1935, in Lahore, Anwar Sajjad Sajjad completed his higher studies in medicine from King Edward Medical College before heading out to the University of Liverpool for a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He was a medical doctor by profession.
He began to write in the 1950s, when he was still a teenager. He wrote a number of plays for Pakistani television including Picnic,Raat Ka Pichla Pehar,Koyal,Yeh Zameen Meri Hai etc.
Anwar Sajjad was also a television actor who starred in a number of PTV productions and was also nominated for a PTV award for his performance in drama serial Saba aur Samandar.
He was also an active member of the Lahore circle of literary figures and artists and had also chaired the Pakistan Arts Council, Lahore in the past. He had command on short-story writing and fiction but he was also an incredibly talented voice-over artist and teacher.
His notable works of published fiction included ‘Chauraha’, ‘Janam Roop’, ‘Khushiyon Ka Baagh’ and ‘Neeli Notebook’. He was awarded Pride of Performance Award in 1989.
Anwar Sajjad passed away on June 6, 2019, in Lahore.

Seven drug peddlers netted

RAWALPINDI, Jun 06 (APP):Rawalpindi police in an action against suspected drug peddlers and other lawbreakers here on Thursday arrested seven accused besides recovering over six kg charas and other items from their possession.
According to a police spokesman, Taxila police held Asad for having 1060 grams charas and Fida for possessing 1380 grams charas.
Gungmandi police rounded up Farhad on recovery of 1230 grams charas, Yousaf with 600 grams charas and Imran for having 530 grams charas.
Chontra police arrested a drug peddler namely Irfan and recovered 1200 grams charas while Pirwadhai police netted Arshad with 800 grams charas.
Separate cases have been registered against all accused while further investigations are underway.
City Police Officer, Rawalpindi had directed the police officers to accelerate ongoing operations against drug peddlers, bootleggers and other lawbreakers, he added.

BEIJING, Jun 6 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reiterated his resolve to make Pakistan a great nation and regain its position by following the Chinese development model through utmost hard work and a sharp focus on industrial and agricultural progress.

“If we follow the Chinese model, I have no doubt, Pakistan will regain its position in the comity of nations and will be respected like our Chinese brothers are done by friends and foes… We will follow your model, work hard untiringly, put in our sweat and blood, and make Pakistan a great country,” the prime minister said addressing the 4th Pakistan-China Friendship and Business Reception here.

He told the gathering of Pakistani and Chinese business leaders that Pakistan would follow Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision to focus on progress and prosperity by avoiding conflicts and cited immense Chinese progress and projects like the Belt and Road Initiative, China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI).

The prime minister who is in China on a five-day official visit, advised the Pakistani people against being dejected or losing hope rather than standing up and accepting the challenge to reach the level of Chinese progress within a few years or decades.

He said the China-Pakistan friendship had no parallel in the world which remained unshakeable and unreachable even during the storms, wars, and earthquakes.

Recalling the Chinese journey of swift development to become the second biggest economic and military power under President Xi’s vision, Prime Minister Shehbaz said it was achieved only through hard work and untiring efforts.

“All Pakistanis will also have to pass through this thorny process. There is no other way to earn respect in the world,” he remarked.

He said having come into being two years after Pakistan, China took its trade to trillions of dollars while Pakisan’s hovered around $30-40 billion in terms of exports. Besides, China has excelled in information technology and artificial intelligence. He also referred to the “wonderful” bilateral cooperation in space program as Pakistan recently sent a lunar satellite and a space satellite recently with Chinese collaboration.

Referring to the sad and gruesome attack by TTP killing five Chinese workers in Becham in April, Prime Minister Shehbaz condemned the incident and conveyed his deepest condolence to the families of those who were killed.

He said the incident which sent a shockwave across Pakistan was the nefarious plot of enemies of China-Pakistan friendship and CPEC as well as those who did not want to see bilateral ties rising to the apex of glory.

“I want to make a solemn pledge that whatever is humanly possible, we will put in all measures and arrangements to protect the lives of every Chinese citizen in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KP, GB and AJK. I want to make a solemn commitment that the security of Chinese nationals will be more than that of my own and my children,” he assured.
