Mohsin Naqvi meets British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15 (APP): Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi met with British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan) Hamish Falconer in London and discussed matters of mutual interest, including the promotion
of Pakistan-UK bilateral relations.

The British Under-Secretary of State extended felicitations to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the people of Pakistan on the occasion of Independence Day, said a press release.

During the meeting regional peace & stability and combating the scourge of terrorism were also discussed. Both ministers emphasized the need to increase mutual cooperation for peace and stability.

The minister stated that the second phase of repatriation of the Afghan refugees to their homeland would start soon.

He said that Pakistan was the most affected country by terrorism, while it’s security forces have made unprecedented sacrifices in the war against terrorism and added that terrorism was a global issue, and many countries face this challenge in various forms.

While welcoming British cooperation in combating terrorism, the minister said that joint actions in this regard would be fruitful. He emphasized that Pakistan was a peaceful country and desired lasting peace in the region.

He further highlighted that Pakistan and the UK have historical friendly relations.

The British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State said that Pakistan was an important member of the Commonwealth and acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war against terrorism.

Pakistani High Commissioner, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, and senior officials from the British Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office were also present on the occasion.

PU athletes win 9 medals in Asian rowing championship

LAHORE, Aug 15 (APP):The Punjab University (PU) players created history by winning 9 medals for the first time by showing excellent performance in Asian Rowing Indoor Championship held in Penang, Malaysia.
According to spokesperson, PU students won 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. As many as 19 countries including India, Saudi Arab, Iran, Iraq participated in the event.
PU rowing team participated in the championship under the supervision of Director Sports Zubair Ahmad Butt and Coach Abdul Rehman. Student Abdul Rahman of PU Department of Economics clinched 2 gold medals and one silver medal, Zarak Khan from Hailey College won 2 gold medals. Gohar Ayub of Sports Sciences won 1 gold and 1 silver medal while Iqra from Sports Sciences won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Moreover, Abdul Rehman and Zarak Khan were declared the best time performers in the championship. Two gold medals were won by the PU students in team event.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood congratulated the players for this wonderful and historical achievement. He said that the players of PU have made the country, the institution and the nation proud. He said that the day and night hard work of the Department of Sports, coaches and players paid off. He said that despite limited resources, PU provided Rs. 1.5 million to the players to participate in the event.
Director Sports Mr Zubair Butt thanked the PU VC for encouraging sports on campus.

ADM Group to invest $250mln in Pakistan’s electric vehicle sector

ISLAMABAD, Aug 15 (APP):ADM Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yasir Bhambhani on Thursday said that the ADM Group was keen to invest an amount of $250 million in Pakistan for the manufacturing of electric vehicles to provide ecological-friendly automobiles to local consumers.
In a meeting with Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, he said the first phase of the project charging network station would be established, followed by the manufacturing of electric vehicles in the second phase. He said the electric vehicles will have a range of 300 kilometres on a single charge.
The minister said the government is ready to facilitate direct foreign investment in the country, and the Ministry of Industries and Production is committed to collaborating closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth process. He emphasized the importance of focusing on green energy, adding that electric vehicles have become a reality.
Rana Tanveer highlighted the benefits of electric vehicles, including their lower cost compared to traditional vehicles and fuel savings.

DG environment plants sapling

FAISALABAD, Aug 15 (APP): Director General (DG) Environment Department Punjab Imran Hamid Sheikh on Thursday planted a sapling on Chak No 248-RB, Dalowal under plant for Pakistan campaign.
Deputy Director Johar Abbas Randhawa and other officers, brick kiln owners and students took part in the plantation drive.
He said that plantation was vital for the protection of the environment.
He directed plantations at brick kilns and other available spaces.

 SDOs of FESCO suspended for misbehaving with consumers

FAISALABAD, Aug 15 (APP):Four Sub Divisional Officers (SDOs) of Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) were suspended on the charge of negligence, delinquency and misbehaviour with consumers.
Spokesman Tahir Sheikh said here on Thursday that Chief Executive Officer (CEO) FESCO Engineer Muhammad Amir received complaints against SDO Nazim Abad Subdivision Shoaib-ur-Rehman, SDO Dijkot Subdivision Zeeshan Sarwar, SDO City Subdivision Bhakkar Kazim Raza and DSO City Subdivision Darya Khan Ayyaz Khan that they had not only committed negligence in their official duties by also misbehaved the honorable FESCO consumers by abusing their powers.
Talking serious notice, FESCO Chief suspended these four SDOs and warned the other FESCO officers and officials to perform their duties honestly and dedicatedly in addition to dealing with the FESCO consumers politely as the FESCO clients are precious asset of the company.
FESCO Chief also directed the operation staff in all circles, divisions and subdivisions to attend the phone calls immediately and respond prompt for redress of electricity related complaints.
He also directed the FESCO officers to listen to the consumers’ complaints in open courts daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. so that their electricity related issued could be redressed without any delay.
Meanwhile, Director Career Management FESCO Mehmood Ahmad also issued notification for suspension of 4 SDOs, FESCO spokesman added.

PU establishes Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund

LAHORE, Aug 15 (APP):The Punjab University (PU) has established Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund (ASEF) in order to financially aid deserving students for completion of their higher education.
In this regard, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood presided over a meeting of the PU Alumni Office here on Thursday. The meeting was attended by PU Alumni Office Director Prof Dr Mumtaz Anwar Chaudhry, Planning & Development Director Prof Dr Hafiz Muhammad Anwaar Asghar and others were present. VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood and Dr Mumtaz Anwar Chaudhry also announced begin the ASEF with personal contribution.
Addressing the meeting, PU VC Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood said that Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established for the financial assistance of students. He said that alumni all over the world provide financial support to their respective universities for promotion of education and research. He said that most of the PU students belong to the middle class and poor class. He said that PU was trying to ensure that no students had to discontinue higher education due to lack of money.
Prof Dr Mumtaz Anwar Chaudhry said that under the endowment fund, deserving students will be given scholarships as well as Qarz-e-Hasna for ten years. He said that providing financial support to deserving students through any means has become a challenge. He said that various organizations are providing financial assistance to students of PU. He said that the One Alumni- One Student program is also being launched under which one alumni will provide financial assistance for the education of incumbent students. He said that the Alumni Office has taken some important steps to strengthen ties with former students.
