Short-term inflation eases by 0.16%

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): The weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), witnessed a decrease of 0.16 percent for the combined consumption groups during the week ended on August 15, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

According to the PBS data, the SPI for the week under review in the above-mentioned group was recorded at 322.03 points as compared to 322.54 points during the past week.

As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined consumption group in the week under review witnessed an increase of 16.86 per cent.

The weekly SPI with the base year 2015-16 =100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

However, the SPI for the lowest consumption group of up to Rs 17,732, witnessed a nominal increase of 0.07 per cent and went up to 311.04 points from last week’s 310.83 points.

The SPI for the lowest consumption groups of Rs 17,732-22,888 also witnessed a nominal increase of 0.01 percent whereas for consumptions groups from Rs 22,889-29,517; Rs 29,518-44,175 and above Rs 44,175, it decreased by 0.05 percent, 0.10 and 0.25 percent respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 19 (37.25%) items increased, 13 (25.50%) items decreased and 19 (37.25%) items remained stable.

The items, which recorded major decrease in their average prices on a week-on-week basis included onions (4.91%), petrol (3.15%), diesel (2.44%), wheat flour (1.83%), pulse moong (1.81%), chicken (1.57%), bananas (1.36%), LPG (0.90%), sugar (0.59%), potatoes (0.58%) and pulse masoor (0.56%)

The commodities which recorded major increase in their average prices on week-on-week basis included tomatoes (34.77%), eggs (4.78%), garlic (1.99%), beef (0.88%), cooked beef (0.41%), georgette (0.40%), gur (0.39%), curd (0.32%) and mustad oil (0.28%).

On-year basis, the commodities that witnessed decrease included wheat flour (34.46%), chilies powder (17.78%), electricity charges for q1 (16.91%), cooking oil 5 litre (11.10%), petrol (10.07%), diesel (9.22%), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg (8.84%), rice basmati broken (8.59%), vegetable ghee 1 kg (6.85%), mustard oil (5.43%), sugar (5.17%) and washing soap (0.35%).

The commodities which recorded an increase in their average prices on year-on-year basis included gas charges for q1 (570.00%), onions (125.64%), pulse gram (42.00%), tomatoes (27.77%), powered milk (26.51%), garlic (25.16%), gents sandal (25.01%), pulse moong (24.64%), shirting (23.84%), beef (23.71%), salt powder (21.14%) and long cloth (16.64%).

Six individuals from Balochistan will receive high civil awards

QUETTA, Aug 16 (APP):As many as six individuals from Balochistan will be awarded high civil awards, a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Government of Pakistan, announced.
These included Deputy Commissioner Panjgur, Shaheed Zakir Baloch, Captain (R) Hamza Anjum for bravery with the Sitara-e-Shujaat, Dr. Shafi Muhammad Bizenjo Shaheed for bravery with the Tamgha-e-Shujaat, Dr. Rababa Baledi for public service with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Abdul Rashid Kakar for education with the Pride of Performance, and Nadir Khan Magsi for sports with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz.
These Pakistan Civil Awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held on March 23, 2025.

Two persons injured in road accident

PATTOKI, Aug 16 (APP):Two persons on Friday received critical injuries in road accident on Multan road.
According to Rescue 1122,  a truck overturned due to over-speeding. In a result, two persons, Aslam, 22 and Ghulam Muhammed 35 years old got critical injuries.
The Rescue team after first aid, shifted the injured to Tehsil Headquarter Hospital (THQ) .

DC chairs DDMA’s meeting

CHINIOT, Aug 16 (APP):Deputy Commissioner, Muhammad Asif Raza on Friday chaired meeting of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to review arrangements to cope flood-like situation.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Muhammad Umar, Assistant Commissioners, Shazia Rehman, Tariq Mahmood Gondal, Shams ur Rehman, officials of Rescue 1122, Health, Agriculture departments and other concerned departments were present in the meeting.
The deputy commissioner directed to take ever possible measure to cope with floods and shift the people living near the river to  safer areas on urgent basis.
He directed to provide  possible relief to the people on emergency in 10 flood relief camps established in the district and monitor the situation of embankments on the river.

Three profiteers held

SARGODHA, Aug 16 (APP):The district administration arrested three shopkeepers over profiteering in various parts of city, here on Friday.
According to official sources, the price control magistrates inspected various points including University Road, Chungi No 9 and Khushab Road and found shopkeepers — Javed, Ashraf and Bilal — involved in profiteering.
The magistrates got registered cases and also imposed fine on them.

Shipping Activity at Port Qasim

KARACHI, Aug 16 (APP):Shipping activity was reported at the port where four ships, MSC Brasilia-VII, Tucapel, Al-Jabriya and Silver Orla carrying Container, Palm Kernel and Palm oil, berthed at Container Terminals, Multi-Purpose Terminal and Cargo Terminal respectively on Thursday,August.
Meanwhile two more ships, Solar Roma and Marangas Asclepius are also arrived at outer-anchorage of the Port Qasim on today morning.
A total of eight ships were engaged at PQA berths during the last 24 hours, out of them five ships,MSC Positano, MSC Barasila, Tucapel, Betele and Semeru are expected to sail on today.
Cargo volume of 158,944 tonnes, comprising 43,284 tonnes imports cargo and 115,660 tonnes export cargo carried in 5,457 Containers (1,481 TEUs Imports& 3,976 TEUs Export) was handled at the port during last 24 hours.
There are 06 ships at Outer Anchorage of Port Qasim, out of them two ships, Wisteria and Marangas Asclepius & two more ships, Captain Haddok carrying gasoline, LNG, Grain and Containers are expected to take berths at  FOTCO, EETL and QICT respectively on today.
Meanwhile, another Containers ship ‘CMA CGM Attila’ is due to arrive at port on Saturday.

Crackdowns against alms-seekers continues: 27 arrested

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):In a coordinated effort led by the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad, Assistant Commissioners and Magistrates have launched an operation targeting professional beggars across various areas of the Federal Capital.
According to the spokesman of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration, the operation resulted in the arrest of 27 professional beggars. The arrests were made by Assistant Commissioners in different jurisdictions.
The Assistant Commissioner City apprehended 10 beggars near Jamia Masjid Rumi and Faisal Market. In the Pothohar area, six beggars were arrested, while the Assistant Commissioner Rural area detained eleven beggars from P.S. Lohibher, Sahala, and nearby areas.
The arrested beggars were taken to the police station. Meanwhile, minors found begging were sent to the Edhi Center for care and rehabilitation.
This operation is part of a daily crackdown supervised by the Assistant Commissioners, aimed at addressing the issue of begging in Islamabad.
The ICT admin has planned to continue their daily operations to address the issue of begging in Islamabad. The focus will remain on arresting professional beggars and providing care for minors found on the streets

Govt taking steps for education promotion: MPA

SARGODHA, Aug 16 (APP):The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is taking exemplary steps to promote education in the province by reforming the system.
This was stated by Member of the Punjab Assembly (MPA) and PML-N District General Secretary, Rana Munawar Ghous, at a ceremony, held at Government Degree College for Boys Sillanwali, in connection with the Independence Day celebrations, on Friday.
He said that students are our future assets and in this regard, the federal and Punjab governments are fully committed to ensuring that every child gets education, as it is a basic right of every child according to our Constitution.
All missing facilities in the college would be provided very soon as per the vision of the Punjab chief minister, he added.
Later, the MPA, along with College Principal Malik Ziaul-Hassan, planted saplings at the college lawns as part of the ‘A Plant for Pakistan’ campaign.
