Virtual University announces results of Spring 2024 semester

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (APP):The Virtual University of Pakistan on Thursday announced the results for the Spring 2024 semester examinations.
According to the University, the results are now available on the university’s Learning Management System (LMS).
A total of 111,801 students appeared in 555,922 papers, achieving an impressive overall passing rate of 81.10%.
The Controller Examination Virtual University, Dr. Faisal Tehseen Shah, commended the students and faculty and said, “This outstanding performance reflects the dedication and hard work of our students, supported by the unwavering commitment of our faculty and administrative teams. At Virtual University, we are committed to providing accessible, top-quality education, and these results are a testament to the mission.”

President directs lifetime pension payment to disabled son of a deceased employee

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday directed the Employees’ Old Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) to ensure lifetime payment of pension to Muhammad Shehzad, a person with visual disability as the facility was earlier denied to him following his father’s death.

The president said that the person with disability (PWD) could not be left in a merciless situation by the state, given the fact that his elders were deceased and were receiving pension before their death. He regretted that EOBI displayed grave insensitivity by neglecting a PWD and that too at a time when all his predecessors had passed away leaving him without any support.

Muhammad Shehzad (the complainant), who was blind by birth, had filed a complaint with the Wafaqi Mohtasib, stating that his father, Muhammad Afzal Zafar, was an Old Age Pensioner of EOBI and died on December 20, 2016. The complainant’s mother had passed away even before his father. So, he requested EOBI to grant him a “family pension” for life as a “disabled legal heir” of his late father.

The EOBI, however, rejected his application citing Section 22B (3) (i) of the EOB Act, 1976, which provides that only male minors under 18 years of age are eligible for a family pension, whereas Shehzad was 44 years old. The Mohtasib closed further investigation of his complaint, after which, Muhammad Shehzad filed a representation before the President of Pakistan.

The president accepted the complainant’s representation and emphasised that keeping in view the letter and spirit of the Constitution of Pakistan, particularly Articles 9 and 25, a Person with Disability could not be deprived of such a pension, since he deserved to be treated on a much better footing and placed in a more deserving category than any other recipient of pension in the country presently.

He also endorsed Mohtasib’s recommendation that EOBI’s law in this regard should be reviewed and brought in line with the federal policy.

While accepting Muhammad Shehzad’s representation, the president directed EOBI to ensure payment of some reasonable pension/stipend, which should not be less than the pension which the complainant’s deceased father was receiving at the time immediately preceding his death.

“This pension should be paid to the petitioner out of the existing funds of EOBI”, held the president.

Vaccination of children against 12 diseases start

BAHAWALPUR, Aug 22 (APP):A special vaccination campaign has been launched in the district to immunize children under the directive of Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Zaheer Anwar Jappa.
According to Chief Executive Officer Health Dr Amir Bashir, children in the Bahawalpur district would receive vaccinations.
He emphasized the role of civil society, media representatives, and other individuals in ensuring that children are protected from diseases through vaccination. He mentioned that vaccination for children would take place at health centers by teams of the health department.
He noted that free vaccinations were being offered against 12 diseases.
He reiterated that vaccinations for children should be conducted to keep them safe from diseases. He stated that vaccinations were available at primary health centers established at the union council level and urged parents to get their children vaccinated free.

Two students killed in attack on van, CM orders for strict action against culprits

ATTOCK, Aug 22 (APP): Some unidentified attackers Thursday opened indiscriminate firing on a school van and killed at least two students and injured five others and the driver in Dheri Kot area of the district.

The police sources said a van carrying students to Malik Anwar Ul Haq Memorial School, when, the culprits opened fire and killed Ramin Akhter, aged 2 years and Arowa, 10.

They said five other students including Mohib Ali, Sumaira,Shazif, Haseeb Ali, Shazim and the van’s driver , Afzal 48 received injuries in the firing incident.

The outlaws fled from the scene, they added.

Rescue 1122 team shifted the bodies and injured to District Headquarter Hospital.
Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif took notice of the incident and directed the authorities concerned to take urgent action to nab the culprits.

Gold rates up by Rs.800 per tola to Rs.261,800

ISLAMABAD, Aug 22 (APP): The per tola price of 24 karat gold increased by Rs.800 and was sold at Rs.261,800 on Thursday compared to its sale at Rs.261,000 on last trading day.

The price of 10 grams of 24 karat gold also increased by Rs.686 to Rs. 224,451 from Rs. 223,765 whereas the price of 10 gram 22 karat gold went up to Rs.205,747 from Rs.205,118, the All Sindh Sarafa Jewellers Association reported.

The price of per tola and ten gram silver remained unchanged at Rs.2,950 and Rs.2,529.14, respectively.

The price of gold in the international market decreased by $8 to 2,504 from $2,512, the Association reported.

Commissioner visits E-khidmat center

SARGODHA, Aug 22 (APP):Commissioner Jahanzeb Awan inspected the e-Service Center and Land Record Center on Thursday.During his visit, he thoroughly evaluated the various services being provided to people at both centers.
The commissioner interacted with people to get feedback regarding the staff’s conduct and
quality of services being offered.
He also inspected the seating arrangements, drinking water facilities, and other amenities.
He personally visited each counter to assess quality of services and processing procedures.
It was revealed that the e-Service Center had 30 counters, providing over 160 services
from 18 different departments under the one-roof.
The Land Record Center, on the other hand, has 10 counters facilitating various
revenue-related services.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mohsin Salahuddin, Assistant Commissioner Amina Ehsan
Tarar, In charge Land Record Center Rana Khuram Shahzad, and Assistant Manager e-Service Center Afraz Anjum were also present.

All resources must be utilized for promotion of quality education: DC

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Aug 22 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Ms. Sarah Rehman on Thursday said that all available resources should be utilized for promotion of quality education and making the ongoing enrollment campaign successful.
She issued these directions while chairing a meeting held to review the implementation over the provincial government’s ‘Awami Agenda’ initiative. The meeting was also attended by additional deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, additional assistant commissioners, District Education Officers (Male & Female).
The deputy commissioner said the district administration was giving priority to provision of education to all children and in this regard no effort would be spared to make the enrollment drive a success.
She directed the authorities of education department to take all possible steps for enrollment of maximum children in government schools.
She said the implementation over the ‘Awami Agenda’ initiative would be ensured so that maximum relief could be extended to the people.
She directed all officers of the district administration to make all out efforts for extending relief to common man as it was her top priority.

Security arrangements reviewed for peaceful Chelum

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Aug 22 (APP):Tank police have made comprehensive security arrangements to ensure peaceful Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) in the district.
In this regard, District Police Officer (DPO) Tank, Aslam Nawaz Khan, chaired a meeting which was attended by DSPs from all circles.
The meeting discussed various matters including the deployment of three-layer security for Talajat, processions, proper planning before each program, and the use of proper uniforms and equipment.
The DPO stressed  the importance of maintaining law and order to protect the lives and properties of citizens, and ensuring the safety of police personnel.
He also underlined the need for ensuring coordination with religious scholars, peace committees, and local elders to ensure peaceful processions.
The DC also stressed the use of bulletproof jackets and helmets, and strict vigilance on suspicious individuals for maintaining peace and order during the Chehlum processions.

PHATA Rwp sets up help desk to facilitate citizens

RAWALPINDI, Aug 22 (APP):Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) Rawalpindi has set up a help desk to facilitate the citizens.
According to a PHATA Rawalpindi spokesman, Punjab government on the directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz had launched the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar‘ housing scheme, designed to offer houses at accessible installment plans and a simplified application process.
He informed that the housing project is aimed at addressing the housing needs of low-income families. Under the initiative, low-income people including workers and laborers would be able to own their houses, he added.
To benefit from the program, the applicant must be a resident of Punjab, belong to a low-income family with an income of less than Rs 60,000, and be a government employee without existing home ownership.
“Owners of 1-5 marlas of land in urban areas and 1-10 marlas in rural areas would receive interest-free loans of up to Rs 1.5 m from the Punjab government to build homes,” he added.
The loan would be paid back over a period of seven years. There would be no need to pay for the first three months, the spokesman said, adding, Those who take the loans would have to pay a maximum monthly installment of Rs 14,000.
‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme aims to build over 3,000 homes in each district, focusing initially on major cities including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Rawalpindi. The citizens can apply on acag.punjabgov.pk for the housing project, he added.
