DPM arrives in UK for three day official visit

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar arrived in the United Kingdom Saturday for his official visit from 17-19 August 2025 to meet Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Pakistan, Hamish Falconer, Lord Wajid Khan, and Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

According to the Foreign Office, focus of the visit is on strengthening Pakistan-UK ties, boosting cooperation in digital technology, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship, and enhanced cooperation with the Commonwealth.

British MPs, Kashmiri leaders, and representatives of Pakistani Diaspora would also call on the Deputy Prime Minister.

At the Pakistan High Commission in London, the DPM would inaugurate pilot project by Punjab Land Record Authority and One Window Operation by IMPASS.

PMYP-Lahore Qalandars cricket trials in twin cities a resounding success

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):The Prime Minister’s Youth Program (PMYP) talent hunt cricket trials, powered by Lahore Qalandars, concluded successfully in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, drawing thousands of passionate young cricketers from the twin cities.
The two-day trials witnessed an overwhelming response, with boys and girls turning up in large numbers to demonstrate their cricketing skills and passion for the game, said a press release.
Following extensive assessments by qualified coaches and Lahore Qalandars’ dedicated staff, one team each of boys and girls was selected from both Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The initiative not only highlighted the depth of cricketing talent in the region but also reaffirmed the government’s vision to empower youth through sports.
Speaking on the occasion, Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana lauded the enthusiasm and commitment of Islamabad and Rawalpindi’s youth, who thronged the venue in their thousands. He described the trials as “a remarkable success” and expressed his delight at the discovery of top cricketing talent from the twin cities.
Atif Rana extended his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PMYP Chairman Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for their great support in making the nationwide trials possible. He asserted that such initiatives were instrumental in building a stronger sporting culture in Pakistan.
The selected players, brimming with excitement, also shared their joy and appreciation. They thanked the Prime Minister, PMYP, and Lahore Qalandars for providing them with such a unique and prestigious platform, which they described as a dream opportunity to excel at the highest levels of cricket. They vowed to work hard, represent Lahore Qalandars with pride, and bring international recognition and glory to Pakistan.

Nolberto Solano begins new chapter with Pakistan football as head coach

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) welcomed Nolberto Solano, former Peruvian international and seasoned coach, as the new Head Coach of the Pakistan Men’s National Team and the U23 squad.
Solano arrived at Football House, Lahore, where he was warmly received by Acting General Secretary Muhammad Shahid Niaz Khokhar and met with PFF staff, said a press release issued on Saturday.
“I’m very honored to be in Pakistan as the Head Coach of the U23s and Senior team,” said Solano. “We believe in the talent of our players, and I’m here to show what we can achieve together.”
Looking ahead to Pakistan’s upcoming international commitments, Solano emphasized the importance of unity and discipline. “It’s no easy job, but we must work hard on and off the pitch. Our immediate focus is the AFC U23 qualifiers in Cambodia. We need to be strong mentally, bring our best players, and play with purpose. It would be a great moment for the country to qualify.”
Solano also extended his gratitude to the PFF president . “I want to thank Syed Mohsen Gilani for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to contributing to the growth of football in Pakistan.”
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani shared his confidence in the new coach: “Coach Solano brings great experience and a strong vision. We believe he can help take Pakistan football forward and build a competitive team.”

Turkiye extends condolences to Pakistan over flood tragedy

ANKARA, August 16 (APP):The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives caused by devastating floods in Pakistan.
The Ministry, in a statement, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Pakistan, praying for Allah’s mercy on those who lost their lives in the calamity.
Turkiye reaffirmed its solidarity with Pakistan in this time of grief and offered sympathies to the bereaved families.

18 outlaws arrested, drugs & weapons recovered

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police teams from Sumbal, Khanna, Humak, Bhara Kahu, and Shahzad Town police stations have arrested 11 accused involved in various criminal activities.
A police official told APP on Saturday that the police teams also recovered 3,139 grams of Ice, six pistols with ammunition, and a dagger from their possession. He said cases have been registered against the arrested individuals while further investigations are underway.
He said that during a special campaign launched to nab proclaimed offenders and absconders, different police teams also arrested seven criminals.
Following the special directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, the ICT Police continues its effective crackdown against crime and criminal elements to ensure peace and tranquility in the federal capital./

Ethiopian Embassy holds Green Legacy Dialogue with Sindh Government

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):The Ethiopian Embassy Islamabad Saturday hold an Ethio-Pakistan Green Legacy Dialogue in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Minister of Sindh, aiming to exchange knowledge and expertise to tackle the climate change, land degradation and deforestation.
The forum was held at the Chief Minister of Sindh and presided from both sides by Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary of Ethiopia Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula with Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.
Dr. Adefires Worku Gizaw, the Chair of Green Legacy Technical Committee, shared insights into Ethiopia’s roadmap in promoting afforestation, reforestation, food security and job creation in the country besides soil and water management under the Green Legacy Initiative of Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
From Pakistan side, Zubair Ahmed, Secretary of the Environment and Climate Change, gave presentation on the climate change policy and Green Initiatives taken by the Government of Sindh.
Speaking on the occasion, the Ambassador said Ethiopia is leading climate agenda not only in Africa but across the world to promote green and sustainable development across the globe.
He highlighted the adverse impacts of climate change which is not only taking a toll on lives and livelihoods but also disrupting the socio-economic development achieved by the developing countries.
The Ambassador stressed on the need on strengthening cooperation between Ethiopia and Pakistan under the Green Legacy Initiative of Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
He invited the Government of Sindh to send its delegation to Ethiopia for their participation in the Africa Climate Summit taking place in Addis Ababa from September 8-10, 2025.
The Chief Minister, on the occasion, appreciated the Ambassador for taking the initiative of holding the Ethio-Pakistan Green Dialogues to promote bilateral cooperation for exchange of knowledge and expertise for environment conservation and food security.
He said the Government of Sindh would send its delegation to Ethiopia for the Climate Summit to further strengthen environment cooperation between the two countries.

Tarar appreciates Tasawar Arafat’s services in narrative building during stand off with India

“Behind every successful strategy is the hand of the entire team”, he said in a post on his X account. The minister said that the way the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting fought the narrative war during the Marka-e-Haq, there was the effort of several persons behind the achievement.

Tarar thanks Party leadership for NA-66 nomination of Bilal Farooq Tarar

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Saturday thanked former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for nominating Bilal Farooq Tarar as the party’s candidate for the upcoming NA-66 by-election.
In a post on X, Tarar expressed gratitude to Allah Almighty and pledged to uphold the confidence reposed in them by the Party.
“We will strive to live up to the trust the Party has placed in us, and take everyone along,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to collaborative and inclusive leadership.
Tarar also extended thanks to all members of the parliamentary board, describing the Party ticket as a sacred trust bestowed by the party and its workers.

Pakistan Railways launches plan to restore non-functional routes

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):Pakistan Railways has launched a plan to restore several old railway routes that have been non-functional for years, in a bid to strengthen connectivity and revive commercial activity in different regions.
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan (WealthPK), Sibi-Harnai section, which has remained closed since 2006, has already been restored.
The Ministry has conducted a survey to evaluate the practicality, viability, and potential success of reviving seven additional railway routes. A feasibility study has been prepared for this purpose. The proposed sections include Mari Indus–Lakki Marwat–Bannu, Mandra–Bhaun, Faisalabad–Jaranwala, Fort Abbas–Katal Amara, Tando Adam–Tharu Shah, Mirpur Khas–Nawabshah, and Bostan–Zhob.
In addition to restoration, plans are also in place for the construction of new railway links. One such project involves connecting Thar coal mines to Chhor railway station to support energy and industrial transportation needs.
Speaking to Wealth Pakistan, an official at the Ministry of Railways said the department continuously monitors route performance, market demand, and operational feasibility. “Any decisions regarding future freight or passenger expansions will be made strategically, in line with evolving commercial needs and national logistics objectives,” the official added.
At the same time, the Ministry of Railways has also planned to outsource 200 freight wagons to the private sector to meet the growing demands of the industrial and energy sectors.
According to officials, Pakistan Railways is in the final stages of the outsourcing process.
In the past, Pakistan Railways has maintained regular freight operations nationwide. These include cargo express services from Karachi to Multan/Faisalabad and Lahore, Kundian freight operations between Quetta and Taftan, container services for Prem Nagar and Qila Sattar Shah, oil transportation between Multan and Rawalpindi, and dedicated cargo express services supporting commercial and industrial supply chains.
The official further revealed that the feasibility study for rail connectivity with Afghanistan through the Kohat–Thal–Kharlachi route has been completed, and land acquisition is in progress. Similarly, feasibility and transaction advisory services for a new rail link from Gwadar to Nok Kundi are nearing completion. Land acquisition is also under way for rail connectivity from Gwadar to Mastung via Besima, and from Besima (Zero Point) to Jacobabad via Khuzdar.
Pakistan Railways is undergoing the most transformative phase in its history. The Railways Ministry is pursuing a comprehensive reform agenda built around three key pillars: maximising public–private partnerships, expanding outsourcing of services, and ensuring complete transparency.

Saudi Arabia extends condolences to Pakistan over deadly floods

RIYADH, August 16 (APP):The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has expressed heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the government and the people of Pakistan over the loss of lives caused by floods and torrential rains.
In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said that the Kingdom stood in full solidarity with Pakistan during this tragic natural disaster, extending its support to the families of the victims.
It further conveyed best wishes for the swift recovery of those injured in the calamity.
