Courts functioning without fear: CJ LHC
RAWALPINDI, Jun 14 (APP): The Chief Justice (CJ) of Lahore High Court (LHC), Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed on Friday said that the Courts were functioning without any fear and no one would be allowed to interfere in the matters of judiciary.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the judicial complex E-Courts in Rawalpindi, he highlighted his instant actions upon assuming office. “I summoned a full court meeting and decided that the culture of strikes would not be tolerated. On May 13, a circular was issued to the Punjab judiciary, stating that we would not recognise any calls for strikes. Whether there is a strike call or not, we will act according to the law.”
Praising the role of the lawyer’s community, the CJ noted that 90 per cent of lawyers are good professionals.
LHC CJ Malik Shehzad Ahmed said the delay in verdicts of cases is the biggest problem and three generations wait for verdicts for a long period.
“The cases are delayed due to the absence of witnesses,” he said adding that he has consulted with the high court judges to resolve the issues.
He said that overseas Pakistanis faced great hardships in their property cases for appearing before the Courts, adding that Pakistanis living abroad can get a video link facility by coming to the embassy.
Pakistan High Commissioner Rabia Shafiq assumes charge in Singapore
SINGAPORE, Jun 14 (APP): Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Singapore Rabia Shafiq arrived in Singapore and assumed responsibilities as Pakistan’s High Commissioner on Friday.
Having joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 2001, Rabia Shafiq had worked at Headquarters in Political Divisions (Europe, Iran & Turkey, East Asia Pacific), protocol and administration.
She has held diplomatic assignments in Pakistan Missions in Paris, Ankara and Chicago.
Prior to joining as the high commissioner to Singapore, she was serving as Director General Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Weekly inflation up by 1.30 pc
ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP): The weekly inflation measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), witnessed an increase of 1.30 percent for the combined consumption groups during the week ended on June 13, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.
According to the PBS data, the SPI for the week under review in the above-mentioned group was recorded at 313.93 points as compared to 309.91 points during the past week.
As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined consumption group in the week under review witnessed an increase of 23.03 per cent.
The weekly SPI with the base year 2015-16 =100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.
The SPI for the lowest consumption group of up to Rs 17,732, increased by 1.01 per cent and went up to 304.28 points from the last week’s 301.25 points.
The SPI for consumption groups of Rs 17,732-22,888, Rs 22,889-29,517; Rs 29,518-44,175 and above Rs 44,175, increased by 1.31 percent, 1.11 percent, 1.07 and 1.29 percent respectively.
During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 19 (37.26%) items increased, 08 (15.68%) items decreased and 24 (47.06%) items remained stable.
The items, which recorded a decrease in their average prices on a week-on-week basis included onions (5.00%), chilies powder (1.95%), rice basmati broken (1.65%), garlic (1.32%), rice irri (1.08%), bread (0.52%), wheat flour (0.05%) and sugar (0.02%).
The commodities which recorded an increase in their average prices on week-on-week basis included tomatoes (27.14%), chicken (11.75%), electricity for q1 (8.73%), pulse gram (7.19%), LPG (6.14%), eggs (3.70%), bananas (3.22%), beef (1.52%), pulse moong (1.07%), mutton (0.60%), cigarettes (0.47%) and energy saver (0.36%).
On-year basis, the commodities that witnessed decrease included wheat flour (29.65%), chicken (19.77%), bananas (19.26%), cooking oil 5 litre (16.69%), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg (14.81%), vegetable ghee 1 kg (13.01%), mustard oil (8.77%) and tea packet (2.52%).
The commodities which recorded an increase in their average prices on year-on-year basis included gas charges for q1 (570.00%), onions (105.91%), tomatoes (72.60%), chilies powder (54.81%), garlic (39.90%), salt powder (30.56%), shirting (30.52%), gents sandal (25.01%), pulse mash (23.85%), beef (23.21%), electricity charges for q1 and pulse gram (21.46%) each.

Police arrest three cattle thieves
RAWALPINDI, Jun 14 (APP): The district police arrested three cattle thieves, members of a gang, said a police spokesman on Friday.
He informed that Mandra police netted three accused namely Faisal, Bashir and Khursheed, allegedly involved in theft of cattle and vehicles.
The police also recovered cattle worth Rs 3.5 million, a stolen carry van and other items from their possession.
The spokesman said that efforts were being made to net other members of the gang.
Superintendent of Police, Potohar appreciated the performance of the police team and directed to accelerate ongoing operation against outlaws.

Indonesia embassy, ACI hosts ‘ASEAN Movie Night’

ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP): The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, in collaboration with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Committee in Islamabad (ACI) has hosted a ASEAN Movie Night event featuring the award-winning Indonesian film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap”, directed by the Indonesian Producer Bene Dion Rajagukguk.

The event was a delightful fusion of cinema and cuisine, celebrating the rich cultural ties and immense similarities between Indonesia and Pakistan.
On this occasion, the Indonesia Chargé d’ Affaires (CDA) Rahmat Hindiarta in his welcoming remarks apprised the distinguished guests from the diplomatic and Pakistani community that the ASEAN Movie Night reflects the spirit of continuously bolstering friendship among ASEAN family members. “Moreover, I also wish to transfer the spirit of friendship among us to our brothers and sisters in Pakistan and beyond,” he said.

The Indonesian CDA also called Pakistani filmmakers to ‘Look East’ to further explore the potential of the creative economy in Indonesia and ASEAN region.
Elaborating the huge economic potential of the Indonesian creative industry he said, “The film industry is currently the fastest-growing sub-sector of Indonesia’s creative economy. The number of moviegoers in the country was more than 55 million in 2023. In 2023, the local film industry in Indonesia set a new record with 20 movies, attracting over 1 million viewers each. In recent years, the film and entertainment industry in ASEAN countries, have experienced robust growth.”
The event commenced by screening the video on ASEAN Summit 2023 held in the enchanting paradise of Labuan Bajo as one of Indonesian ten new Balis followed by the screening of an Indonesian movie that provided a cinematic treat showcasing Indonesia’s perfect blend of humour, mutual respect, ideal parenting, local wisdom and morality, cultural richness, and beauty of the natural landscape.
Released in 2022, “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” is a comedy film that tells the story of an elderly couple from the Batak tribal family in Toba Lake, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Known for their rich customs and social structure, the Batak community places a strong emphasis on patriarchal hierarchy and respect for elders. The film portrays the couple’s three sons who have left home to pursue their careers far away from their village.
In a humorous twist, the parents pretend to divorce to compel their sons to return home. The movie is pictured in the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Toba—the largest volcanic lake in the world, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2020.
The audience also savoured a variety of mouth-watering Indonesian dishes, including bakso (meatball soup), chicken satay (sweet saucy BBQ), onde-onde (glutinous rice balls dessert), and much more on this occasion.
After the movie, all the guests received goodie bags from Indomie, the world’s largest instant noodle brand, which manufactures in Faisalabad with the flavors tailored to the Pakistani market.
