Win-Pakistan organizes seminar on ‘Knowledge sharing with women in Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Security’

ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP):Women in Nuclear Pakistan Chapter (WiN-Pakistan), Pakistan Nuclear Society (PNS), and Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority jointly organized a day-long seminar on “Knowledge Sharing with women in Nuclear Safety and Nuclear Security”.

The event aimed at providing a common forum of information exchange, sharing awareness on nuclear safety and nuclear security, and knowledge transfer for the young females perusing career in this field. Around hundred female officers participated in the event. Dr. Ansar Parvez HI Former Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission inaugurated the event, according to a press release issued here on Friday.

President Win-Pakistan Chapter, Dr. Shazia Fatima highlighted the activities of chapter carried out nationally and internationally. She appreciated the support of Pakistan Nuclear Society, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Pakistan Science Foundation in this regard.

In the plenary session, senior female officers who have served on leading positions or currently serving on leading positions in different capacities related to nuclear safety and nuclear security shared their career experiences.

In technical session, presenters covered human resource and professional development for women in nuclear, gender inclusion in organization setups and role of women in safety assessments. Considering the existing and future challenges of nuclear safety and nuclear security, the opportunities for women in nuclear have also been covered.

Globally there exist 57 country Chapters of Women in Nuclear (as reported on WiN Global Website) which promote gender diversity, gender gap balance in organizational setups, climate change and energy crises, and allied field of nuclear.

Pakistan is participating in WiN Global activities since 1992. The formal structure of the chapter is defined through first volunteer election conducted by Pakistan nuclear society in July 2023. Within a year WIN-Pakistan got recognition nationally and internationally. The chapter is committed to have stronger ties with WIN-IAEA and WIN-Global through established point of contacts.

Through this seminar, WIN-Pakistan have been suggested with way forward including reaching out to women working in remote areas in nuclear sectors, building stronger relations with other existing chapters regionally and globally, conducting sessions based on specific topics (i.e. women in nuclear medicine, nuclear operation, nuclear management etc., and initiating mentorship program.

Deceased Sichuan Normal University teachers conferred Tamgha-e-Pakistan Award

BEIJING, Jun 14 (APP): Three Chinese teachers of Sichuan Normal University were posthumously awarded the Tamgha-i-Pakistan in a solemn investiture ceremony held in Chengdu on Friday.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, on behalf of the President of Pakistan, gave away the awards to the honorees’ families in remembrance of their ultimate sacrifice in strengthening the Pakistan-China friendship.

The participants included families of the deceased, and Ms Cai Guangjie, Deputy Director of the Education Department of Sichuan Province; Ms. Zhang Junli, Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese International Education Foundation; Wang Yong, Director of Development, Planning Department of CLEC; Dr Guo Yong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Sichuan Normal University; faculty and students of Sichuan Normal University.

Ambassador Hashmi expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of Huang Guiping, Ding Mufang, and Chen Sai, who lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Karachi on 26th April 2022.

The ambassador underscored Pakistan’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice and assured the attendees of the enhanced security measures for Chinese projects, personnel, and institutions in Pakistan.

Highlighting the historical legacy of cooperation between the two nations, he reiterated that such nefarious acts could not undermine the time-tested Pakistan-China friendship.

On behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, he assured that no effort to undermine the bilateral relations would succeed.

“Pakistan is committed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and has taken a number of measure to enhance the security of Chinese projects, personnel and institutions in Pakistan,” he added.

Chinese speakers at the ceremony echoed the sentiments of deep loss and the importance of the contributions made by the deceased teachers. They reaffirmed the strength of the Pakistan-China friendship and the continued collaboration in education and other sectors.

Dr Muhammad Yousaf’s book significant milestone for research, culture, civilization: Rana Sikandar

ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP): Provincial Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat Friday said Muhammad Yousaf Bashir has preserved the cultural history of the Global South through his book and it should be encouraged in every possible way.

The book “Handbook of Research on Deconstructing Culture and Communication in the Global South,” edited by renowned researcher, teacher and media scholar Dr Muhammad Yousaf Bashir, was introduced at a ceremony held at Qasim Ali Shah Foundation, a news release said.

Chairperson of the Punjab Higher Education Commission, Professor Dr Shahid Munir praised Dr. Muhammad Yousaf’s creative work in his speech and described the book as an important document and milestone for teachers and students in the Global South.

Director of the Institute of Communication, Professor Dr Noshina Saleem expressed her pride in having the author among her students

Director General of Public Libraries, Kashif Manzoor commended Professor Dr Muhammad Yousaf Bashir’s efforts, noting that many problems could be solved through such initiatives. Professor Dr. Zahid Bilal emphasised the need to reconnect with our culture and values.

Writer of the book Dr Muhammad Yousaf explained that the book attempts to summarise the knowledge created and compiled in countries other than the West. Mirza Muhammad Yaseen Baig remarked that such books help in understanding the local landscape.

Among other speakers, Dr Mubeena Iftikhar mentioned her journey towards a PhD and how Dr Muhammad Yousaf transformed her life. Dr Murtaza Ashiq stated that this book would serve as a reference for teachers and students in Pakistan.

Drug peddler sentenced to 9 years imprisonment

ATTOCK, Jun 14 (APP):The Control of Narcotics Substances Court (CNS) sentenced nine-year imprisonment and imposed a fine on an accused involved in a drug peddling case.
According to police sources, the accused, Muhammad Musthan, son of Hakmat Khan, was arrested by Rango Police in the case registered under Section 9-C of the Control of Narcotics and Substances Act 1997 after the recovery of hashish from his custody in 2023.
The judge, after hearing the arguments of defense and prosecution counsels, announced the verdict as the convicted was found guilty of having drugs and subsequently awarded nine-year imprisonment and a fine worth Rs 80 thousand.
During the proceedings, the public prosecutor for the state argued that the accused was caught red-handed while smuggling the contraband, and the evidence on record fully connected him with the commission of the offense.

Sindh allocates Rs 3.66 bln for People’s Bus Service in budget for FY 2024-25

KARACHI, Jun 14 (APP):The Sindh Government has allocated the funds amounting Rs 3.66 bln in next budget for FY 2024-25 for subsidy in order to keep People’s Bus Service operational.
In his budget speech, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah before the Sindh Assembly on Friday said the provincial Government through the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) embarked on a transformative journey in October 2021.
He added this visionary project is designed to revolutionize public transportation across the province. It serves the populous regions of Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur, and Mirpurkhas with a present fleet of 290 state-of-the-art diesel-electric (hybrid) buses with a passenger capacity of 110,000, he said.
He said that despite the constantly high inflation rate, the fare remains set at Rs 50 to provide relief to the public. The government subsidizes the operational costs of the buses. The project also includes a women-exclusive transport initiative named the Pink Bus Service, which has been lauded by both local and international fora, he said.
He said that the Sindh government is in the process of initiating more routes and adding more buses to the fleet under the People’s Bus Service initiative by anticipated induction of further 500 Eco Friendly Electric Buses on rent to own model.

Sindh allocates Rs 10b for clean drinking water project

KARACHI, Jun 14 (APP): The Sindh Government has announced a block allocation of Rs 10 bln in the next financial year 2024-25, for clean drinking water project.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah while presenting Budget for 2024-25, at Sindh Assembly here on Friday, said that to fulfill our election promise to the people, provincial Government has planned a mega project of providing every citizen of the province with access to clean drinking water during the tenure of the present government.

He said that we have kept a block allocation of Rs 10 bln in the next FY in addition to the
regular budget of Public Health Engineering Department.

Cleaning of nullahs to be completed before monsoon season: Mayor Karachi

KARACHI, Jun 14 (APP):Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab Friday said that the cleaning of the storm water drains has been started and it will be completed before the monsoon season.
Choking points have been identified and cleaning work of Karachi’s 46 major drains has been started simultaneously, he expressed these views during his visit to various storm water drains. Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi and officers concerned were also present.
The Mayor Karachi visited the drains in Manzoor Colony, Qayyumabad, Mauripur, Sakhi Hasan, Paposh Nagar, Pahar Ganj, KDA Chowrangi and other areas and issued instructions regarding their cleanliness.
He said that apart from 46 big drains, there are 500 such small drains and cleanliness of which will clear all rainwater in these areas, especially the people of the suburban area will not face any problems.
He said that our effort is that the citizens will face minimal suffering in the monsoon season and the process of drainage of rainwater also be completed quickly, rainwater must be cleared immediately from the main highways so that the flow of traffic is maintained.
He said that during the rains, the officers concerned and staff should be seen on the roads and I myself will supervise the work during the rainy season.
He also directed that dewatering pumps, machinery and vehicles should be stationed at those places where immediate water drainage will be required. He said that if it rains heavily and continuously, it takes some time to drain out water, but the staff of KMC will start immediate action.
The Mayor Karachi said that staff will work in three shifts and municipal services offices, workshops will be kept open round the clock.
He said that in the past also these choking points have been identified which are necessary for premature cleaning and this year also all the choking points that need to be kept clean have been identified. The Mayor Karachi said that last year also KMC staff performed best during rain and I expect them to work hard with dedication this year as well.

Sindh estimates Rs1900 bln federal transfer in FY2024-25

KARACHI, Jun 14 (APP): Sindh government has set budget estimates for federal transfers at Rs1,900.8 bln for the financial year 2024-25 showing 40.5% growth over budget estimates of Rs1,353.2 bln in current FY 2023-24.

Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah, while delivering the budget 2024-25 speech in the provincial Assembly on Friday, informed that budget estimates for federal transfers for the FY 2024-25, included Rs1,747.4 bln for divisible pool components, Rs106.4 bln for straight transfers and Rs 46.9 bln for OZT grants.

He said that federal transfers depend upon the annual collection by the Federal Board of Revenue and we appreciate the federal government’s commitment to achieve their annual targets thereby assuring transfers to Sindh according to the plan in the current financial year.

The CM hoped that the province will receive funds according to estimates in the next financial year 2024-25 as well.

KP governor thanks PM for allocating Rs 19 bln for Chashma Lift Canal

ISLAMABAD, Jun 14 (APP): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Friday extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for allocating Rs 19 billion the Federal Budget for completion of the Chashma Lift Canal project that would help boost the wheat crop yield in the province.

Talking to the media outside the Parliament House, Governor Kundi said after the project’s completion the province would be able to chip in the country’s wheat export along with meeting its local needs.

The Chashma Lift Canal would be inaugurated during the current year, he added.

The governor regretted that the promises made to federally and provincially administered tribal areas (FATA & PATA respectively) had not been fulfilled whereas the issues pertaining to the new taxes for the newly merged districts needed to be resolved.

“Everyone knows about the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the KP chief minister must call an emergency meeting of the apex committee,” Kundi said.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was bragging about its education reforms whereas 26 universities in the province did not have a vice chancellor, he added.

The governor underlined that efforts were being made to solve the problems of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and give them rights, whereas a task force was being formed, and education experts would be appointed to mull over reforms to improve the education system.

He added that development work would start on the Chakdara-Dir-Chitral Motorway project soon.

DC chairs meeting to review anti-Polio campaign

MIRPURKHAS, Jun 14 (APP):Divisional Commissioner Mirpurkhas Faisal Ahmad Uqeli has said that for the success of the polio campaign, understanding and support should be taken from all stakeholders.
This he said while presiding over the meeting regarding the review of advance arrangements to make the polio campaign successful.
According to the handout issued here on Friday, he further said that polio is a contagious disease that is very important to eradicate, so solutions to the problems and difficulties faced in connection with the polio campaign should be sought from the elected district council members, union council members, and municipal corporation members so that any problems and difficulties can be solved.
The commissioner, during the meeting, also directed the officers of the health department to find out the reasons for the poor performance of the polio campaign in the union councils and adopt effective strategies to solve them.
In the meeting, the officers of the Mirpurkhas Health Department were briefed that the cooperation of the police is needed for the appointment of transit points at the entrances and exits of Mirpurkhas.
