Pakistan eyes $30–40 billion annual revenue through tourism: Sardar Yasir Ilyas

0
ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Tourism, Sardar Yasir Ilyas has said that Pakistan, with its natural beauty, historic monuments, rare cultural heritage, ancient festivals, and diverse religious sites, is a paradise for travelers and has the capacity to generate $30–40 billion annually through tourism.
In an exclusive interview with APP, he announced that Pakistan will host its first international “Tourism Road Expo” in November, showcasing local attractions, traditional cuisine, and cultural diversity. The event will feature cooking competitions with international chefs, while similar expos are also planned for London, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Saudi Arabia.
Calling Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s decision to declare tourism an industry a “historic and visionary step,” he said the move would not only strengthen the economy but also enhance Pakistan’s image abroad. He added that tourism had long been neglected, especially after the 18th Amendment, when provinces pursued individual efforts.
To ensure national-level coordination, the government is reviving and restructuring the National Tourism Coordination Board.
To attract investment, Sardar Yasir revealed that unused government properties will be leased to local and foreign investors for 50–60 years to establish modern tourist facilities. In parallel, digital e-portals are being developed to provide tourists with details of destinations, hotel bookings, weather updates, and travel guidance.
A new branding slogan — “Pakistan: Where Beauty Greets, History Speaks, and Adventure Leaves” — will be launched to highlight Pakistan’s diverse opportunities in medical, religious, adventure, and eco-tourism. However, he cautioned that deforestation and climate change are major threats to tourism. “Large-scale plantation drives and removal of encroachments along rivers and lakes are necessary to preserve our environment and protect tourism,” he stressed.
Highlighting upcoming initiatives, he said new projects under consideration include food streets at F-9 Park and Lake View Park in Islamabad, three mini-parks, and a safari forest in Fateh Jang.
On religious tourism, he said the government is committed to providing more facilities for Sikh pilgrims, while gurdwaras and Buddhist heritage sites will be restored and handed over to respective communities for care and upkeep.
He further said Pakistan has greatly simplified its visa regime. Tourists from 126 countries can now apply online, visa fees have been abolished, and further steps are being taken to ease travel access. “Foreign visitors are often amazed by Pakistan’s landscapes, cultural richness, and hospitality. Our aim is to help more people discover this ‘hidden paradise,’” he remarked.
Noting that Pakistan has never marketed its tourism potential effectively, he pointed out that Central Asian states like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan attract millions of visitors annually despite offering less diversity. “Pakistan, with its four seasons and greater geographical variety, has far more to offer,” he emphasized.
He also underlined the role of social media and vloggers in promoting Pakistan’s image worldwide.
Turning to the country’s youth, Sardar Yasir urged them to gain expertise in e-commerce, crypto, and emerging technologies, while also exploring opportunities in the hospitality and tourism sector. “Tourism is a powerful driver of employment and economic growth, and an important way to showcase Pakistan’s positive global image,” he concluded.

When seconds count: Why every citizen must be disaster-ready

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): As Pakistan continues to face deadly floods, earthquakes, and landslides, the heavy loss of life and property is a clear warning: emergency response alone is not enough. Experts stress that citizens, especially the youth , must be trained in basic life-saving skills such as first aid, CPR, rescue techniques, and evacuation procedures.

With over 60% of Pakistan’s population under the age of 30, this young generation can become a powerful first line of defense in any disaster. Training them now could save countless lives in the critical minutes before professional help arrives.

Though a few dedicated volunteers on social media are sharing tips on how to use everyday resources during sudden floods, their efforts are not enough. Experts say this cannot remain an individual initiative, emergency training must become part of a national action plan.

Dr. Junaid Ahmad, Executive Engineer at the Punjab Irrigation Department, told APP that Pakistan focuses on response and recovery, with little attention to preparedness, and mitigation largely ignored. He emphasized public training in flood warnings, first aid, and evacuation.

In the 2022 floods, many lives were lost to drowning, snake bites, and untreated injuries. Local volunteer training with stipends could create first responders and ease the pressure on rescue teams.

Dr Junaid said disaster authorities and NGOs should hold workshops to teach people how to read warnings, locate shelters, and conduct neighborhood-level evacuation drills.

Schools in flood-prone areas should also include swimming and evacuation training. In Japan, children practice drills from an early age. In contrast, many children in Sindh and southern Punjab drowned in 2022 because they couldn’t swim or identify danger zones.

Past disasters reveal gaps in coordination. In 2010, aid often missed the most affected areas due to lack of local input, whereas the 2005 Kashmir earthquake response was more efficient due to army-NGO-community collaboration.

Dr. Ahmad suggested permanent disaster committees at the union council or district level to maintain local data and connect with NDMA and aid agencies.

Zulfiqar, General Manager Communications at SIEHS-1122, talking to APP said survival often depends on what people do in the first few minutes.

“A high-quality CPR can double survival chances, yet every minute without it reduces survival by 10%.”

He added that their dispatch center guides callers before teams arrive, and community training and digital campaigns aim to make lifesaving a shared responsibility.

Experts warn Pakistan must train citizens to respond to emergencies before help arrives.

Former Fire and Safety Officer Sadam Baig of Rescue 1122 GB said public training is critical as communities are usually the first responders. Through its Community Awareness Program (CAP), Rescue 1122 trains citizens in CPR, firefighting, and first aid. He added that rising disasters and traffic accidents make public readiness essential.

Pakistan’s vulnerability remains high. In 2010, floods affected 20 million people, killing 2,000 and causing $10 billion in damage. In 2022, floods displaced 33 million people, killed over 1,100, and caused over $30 billion in losses and reconstruction needs, as per Post-Disaster Needs Assessment.

Dr. Ahmad noted that mitigation can significantly reduce risks. River floods can be managed with levees, reservoirs, and floodplains; upstream reforestation reduces downstream flooding; zoning laws can keep people away from danger zones.

He cited the Netherlands’ “Room for the River” and Singapore’s ABC Waters Program as models for urban flood management. In Pakistan, cities suffer from clogged drains and over-paved surfaces, making investment in green infrastructure crucial. Every $1 spent on mitigation saves $4–7 in recovery, according to FEMA studies.

Developed countries actively train their citizens for emergencies through national programs and public education. In Japan, schoolchildren regularly practice earthquake and tsunami drills. The United States runs Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs to train local volunteers in disaster response. Germany conducts civil defense drills and encourages households to keep emergency supplies. Australia runs bushfire survival training in high-risk areas. South Korea includes emergency training in schools and runs nationwide disaster simulations. These efforts make communities more resilient and ensure faster, more effective responses when disasters strike.

Experts have strongly advocated that emergency response training cannot remain an individual or ad-hoc effort, it must be embedded within a coordinated national action plan.

To protect lives and reduce disaster losses, Pakistan needs a unified approach that includes public training, school-based drills, community preparedness programs, and integration with local and national disaster authorities. By turning its vulnerable citizens into informed first responders, Pakistan can shift from reactive crisis management to proactive resilience, saving lives when every second counts.

Israel ramps up Gaza City assault, kills dozens of Palestinians: reports

0

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 21 (APP): Israeli attacks killed dozens of people overnight in Gaza City, as Israel ramps up its offensive there and orders Palestinians to leave the besieged enclave, according to media reports.

Along the densely populated coastal al-Rashid Road, thousands of residents are lining up to escape, following Israeli military evacuation orders, in a grueling trek to the central and southern parts of the enclave, UN News reported.

The strikes come as Western countries are increasingly outraged with the intensifying war in Gaza, with some moving to recognize Palestinian statehood at the gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly next week. In a statement Friday, Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said it will recognize a Palestinian state on Sunday.

Portugal is among other Western nations, including the U.K., France, Canada, Australia, Malta, Belgium and Luxembourg, expected to recognize Palestinian statehood in the coming days.

The latest Israeli operation, which started this week, further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire further out of reach.

At least 61 people killed, including 49 in Gaza City, as Israeli forces continue to bombard Gaza.

The Palestinian Civil Defence says nearly half of Gaza City’s population, or about 450,000 people, have fled the area since Israel launched its major operation there in August.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Gaza is experiencing the “worst level of death and destruction” he has seen in his lifetime and calls on the international community not to be “intimidated” by Israel.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 65,208 people and wounded 166,271 since October 2023. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble, with experts saying Gaza City is experiencing famine.”

In recent days, Israel has been ordering hundreds of thousands of Palestinians sheltering in Gaza City to move south to what it calls a humanitarian zone and opened another corridor south of Gaza City for two days this week to allow more people to evacuate.

Palestinians have streamed out of the city by car and on foot. But many in the famine-stricken city are unwilling to be uprooted again, too weak to leave or unable to afford the cost of moving.

On average, the journey south costs more than $3,000, according to UN Palestine refugee agency UNRWA, making it out of reach for many.

Aid groups have warned that forcing thousands of people to evacuate will exacerbate the dire humanitarian crisis. They are appealing for a ceasefire so aid can reach those who need it.

Families of hostages still held by Hamas accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday of condemning their loved ones to death by continuing to fight rather than negotiating an end to the war.

“The blood of our loved ones is, for him, nothing more than a political tool to cling to power,” they said in a statement read outside Netanyahu’s residence. “As long as there is war, Netanyahu has a government.”

Forty-eight hostages remain in Gaza.

Last month, Israel announced that it would take control of Gaza City and in recent weeks has intensified bombardment of high-rise apartment buildings there.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said more than 250,000 people have been displaced from the city in the past month alone, including 60,000 in just 72 hours, as troops advanced into densely populated neighbourhoods such as Sheikh Radwan and Tal al-Hawa.
