Govt resolved for fast, uninterrupted internet connectivity, promotion of AI infrastructure: PM

ISLAMABAD, Jul 31 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the government was taking all-out measures to provide fast and uninterrupted internet connectivity to the people.

The prime minister, in a meeting with a three-member delegation of Asia Internet Coalition headed by Managing Director Jeff Paine, said that the government was implementing a strategy to attract foreign investment in the information technology infrastructure.

The meeting featured the discussion on data security, code of ethics for internet content, and prevention of electronic crimes.

Prime Minister Shehbaz told the delegation that the government was working to promote a basic infrastructure based on artificial intelligence.

He said the government was resolved to make Pakistan achieve a distinction in AI infrastructure in the region.

He said under the Digital Pakistan Initiative, the whole system was being digitised and expressed the hope that the digitisation of Federal Board of Revenue would prove to be a milestone towards economic dogitisation and automation.

During the briefing, it was told that consultation with all stakeholders on the draft of Personal Data Protection Bill was in progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz appreciated the services of Asia Internet Coalition in promoting IT and internet infrastructure in the Asia Pacific Region.

The delegation members apprised the prime minister of the Coalition’s services in Pakistan’s IT sector.

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja, IT expert Tania Aidrus and relevant senior officers attended the meeting.

AJK Council members call on Amir Muqam

ISLAMABAD, Jul 31 (APP): Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) Council members called on Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs & Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Engr Amir Muqam at Kashmir Council on Wednesday.

During the meetings, the matters pertaining to Kashmir Council development projects and problems faced by the masses were discussed in detail, said a press release.

They also discussed preparations regarding Youm-e-Istehsal on August 5.

The minister said that Youm-e-Istehsal would be observed in an effective manner on August 5. The Council members briefed the minister regarding preparations for August 5 “Youm-e-Istehsal”.

The AJK Council members included Khawaja Tariq Saeed Advocate, Raja Shujah Khursheed, Sardar Adnan Khalid, Younas Mir and Hanif Malik. Joint Secretary AJK Council Ali Akbar Khattak also attended the meeting.

PSX stays bearish, loses 741 points

ISLAMABAD, Jul 31 (APP):The 100-index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) continued with bearish trend on Wednesday, losing 741.82 points, a negative change of 0.94 percent, closing at 77,886.99 points against 78,628.81 points on the last working day.
A total of 382,597,400 shares were traded during the day as compared to 313,085,457 shares the previous day, whereas the price of shares stood at Rs 14.638 billion against Rs 17.615 billion on the last trading day.
As many as 442 companies transacted their shares in the stock market, 118 of them recorded gains and 254 sustained losses, whereas the share price of 70 companies remained unchanged.
The three top trading companies were WorldCall Telecom with 81,162,958 shares at Rs 1.25 per share, Kohinoor Spinning with 24,698,541 shares at Rs 4.08 per share and TLP Properties with 19,693,668 shares at Rs 7.94 per share.
Nestle Pakistan Limited witnessed a maximum increase of Rs 112.70 per share price, closing at Rs 6,965.50, whereas the runner-up was Mehmood Textile Mills Limited with a Rs 27.18 rise in its per share price to Rs 665.95.
Unilever Pakistan Foods Limited witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs 312.14 per share closing at Rs 18,000.00 followed by Sapphire Fibres Limited with a Rs 98.99 decline to close at Rs 1,499.92.

AIOU announces exam schedule for Matric, FA, ICom.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 31 (APP):Allama Iqbal Open University has announced the schedule of Matric, FA, and I. Com exams for the Spring 2024 semester.
According to the AIOU, the exams will commence on September 02 at exam centers across the country.
The date sheet is available on the university’s website, (www.aiou.edu.pk), while roll number slips are being uploaded to students’ portals.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood, has issued directives to ensure basic facilities for students at exam centers.
Meanwhile, admissions for the first phase of the Fall 2024 semester are also underway. Students can submit forms for Matric, FA, and ICom programs until September 5, 2024, while online applications for BS, MS, MPhil, and PhD programs can be submitted until August 20, 2024.

Farmers advised for regular pest scouting of cotton crops

FAISALABAD, Jul 31 (APP):Agricultural experts have advised farmers to take precautionary measures and adopt regular pest scouting for controlling pest attack on cotton crops especially during monsoon rainy season.
A spokesman for the Agriculture (Extension) Department said on Wednesday that cotton crop was passing through an important stage of budding and flowering and this stage attract the pests as moisture increases in the air due to rains.
He said that boll weevil, whitefly, pink bollworm (Gulabi Sundi), Lepidoperous insect (Lashkari Sundi), American Sundi are the main pests which cause heavy damage to the cotton crops.
The boll weevil attacks on flowers and bolls and destroys the cotton lint with its feces and consume its seeds while other insects also badly affect the quantity as well as quality of the production, he added.
He said that the pest attack can cause 60 percent reduction in the yield if the farmers failed to take measures for control pest attacks in-time, he said and advised the growers to regularly conduct pest scouting to save their crops from severe damage.
He said that the pest attack starts during rainy season and its severity decreases after October. Therefore, the cotton farmers are advised to listen to the weather report on radio, television or other media before watering their crops as it is imperative to get bumper yield, he added.

Hina Pervaiz meets Punjab home secretary to discuss woman rights

LAHORE, Jul 31 (APP):Chairperson of the Women Protection Authority Hina Pervaiz Butt met Punjab Home Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal here on Wednesday to discuss protection of rights of women and marginalised segments of society.
She said the chief minister’s mission is to end oppression of women and marginalised segments. She emphasised that standing firmly against the oppressor and ensuring justice for the oppressed was the government mission.
The chairperson mentioned that cases of serious crimes would be pursued to their logical conclusion through the Organised Crime Unit.
The Punjab home secretary said forensic reports in cases related to women should be prepared as a top priority and should be submitted within 48 hours. He assured that the Punjab Home Department would provide all possible support to the Women Protection Authority.
Hina Pervaiz Butt asked women not to feel alone, stating that all state institutions are actively working for their protection.
