Australian High Commissioner visits NARC

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Neil Hawkins on Friday visited National Agricultural Research Centre and discussed matters relating to agriculture sector research and development.

The High Commissioner held a meeting with Chairman Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali (S.I), said a press release.

Dr Ali briefed the envoy about PARC and its ongoing high tech research activities.

Following the meeting, he also visited National Institute for Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB) and Plant Genetic Resources Institute (PGRI).

PNS HUNAIN visits Turkiye, conducts exercise TURGUTREIS-X with Turkish Navy

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): The newly commissioned Pakistan Navy Ship HUNAIN, during maiden voyage from Romania to Pakistan, visited Turkiye and participated in EX TURGUTREIS-X with Turkish Coast Guard Ship GELIBOLU.

The exercise focused on various Joint Maritime Operations with the aim to enhance interoperability between both Navies, a Pakistan Navy news release said.

Earlier, PNS HUNAIN visited Turkish Naval ports at Golcuk and Aksaz. Upon arrival at the ports, the ship was received by Senior Officials of Pakistan Embassy and Turkish Navy. During stay at Golcuk, Commanding Officer of PNS HUNAIN called on Turkish Navy Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Kadir Yildiz and Commander of Golcuk Naval Base Rear Admiral Ali Tuna Baysal.

During the meeting, professional matters of mutual interest and enhancement of bilateral cooperation between both the navies were discussed.

During stay at port Aksaz, Commander 2nd Destroyer Squadron of Turkish Navy, Commodore Captain Cenk TASLI along with Commanding Officer of TCG GELIBOLU visited onboard ship and appreciated Pakistan Navy’s role in maintaining good order at sea in the region and beyond. He further added that visit of PNS HUNAIN will further provide an opportunity to flourish and strengthen existing brotherly relations and provide impetus to diplomatic and defence ties between the two countries.

IGP meets newly recruited DSPs, emphasizes discipline, integrity

KARACHI, Aug 16 (APP):Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, met with 44 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), including 10 DSPs from the legal cadre recruited through the Sindh Public Service Commission, at the Central Police Office in Karachi.
The newly recruited DSPs, who have recently joined the Sindh Police Department, were welcomed by the IGP, said a news release on Friday.
During the meeting, IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon shared insights from his service career, emphasizing the importance of discipline, integrity, and honesty in policing.
He encouraged the young officers to make discipline a core value in their lives, stating that it would earn them greater respect within the force. The IGP also highlighted the Sindh government’s decision to increase the quota for women in police jobs to 15 percent.
IGP Sindh also congratulated the DSPs and urged them to remain committed to their principles and impartiality while performing their duties as police officers.

PU issues LLB roll number slips

LAHORE, Aug 16 (APP):The Punjab University (PU) Department of Examinations has uploaded the roll number slips for LLB (3-year programme) examinations Part-II, III and LLB (5-year program) Part-I, II, III, IV & V for annual examination 2024.
According to a PU spokesperson, the roll number slips of regular students of affiliated colleges have been sent via email on college email addresses while students on campuses can directly access/print their roll number slips from the university website https://pu.edu.pk/splash/allied.
The exams will commence from August 22, 2024.

Cabinet Committee proposes curtailing 150,000 vacant government posts

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP): The Cabinet Committee on Institutional Reforms Friday recommended for curtailing 150,000 vacant positions, banning contingency recruitment, and outsourcing non-core services like cleaning, janitorial work, which will gradually phase out many positions in grades 1 to 16.

In a meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, for reducing public sector size and expenses, the committee, chaired by the Federal Finance Minister, presented its recommendations for right-sizing in the federal government departments. The Ministry of Finance was asked to oversee the cash balances of other federal ministries.

The committee provided a detailed briefing on recommended reforms for five federal ministries: the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, the Ministry of State and Frontier Regions, Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the Ministry of Industry and Production, and the Ministry of National Health Services.

The committee proposed merging the Ministry of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan with the Ministry of State and Frontier Regions (SAFRON).

The proposal involves closing 28 institutions across these five ministries, transferring the Privatization Ministry and some other ministries to federal units, and merging 12 institutions within these ministries.

Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister directed that these proposed reforms should be approved by the Federal Cabinet and that a comprehensive plan for their implementation be presented. He emphasized that curtailing government expenditure was his top priority.

The goal of the government’s institutional reforms was to lessen the burden on the national treasury and enhance the quality of services provided to the public, he said.

The PM directed that institutions failing to demonstrate adequate public service performance and burdening the national exchequer should be either terminated immediately or privatized without delay.

The prime minister vowed to personally oversee the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), an organization supporting small and medium enterprises, and directed that SMEDA be brought under the Prime Minister’s Office.

Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervaiz Malik, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jahanzeb Khan, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for National Health Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Bilal Azhar Kayani and relevant senior government, officials participated the meeting.

Pakistan needs to craft country-specific customized template for national disaster resilience: Gen Inam

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):Chairman, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik on Friday emphasized the need for a customized template for disaster-impacted sectors, robust anticipatory actions and efficient post-disaster reconstruction using local materials and skills.
The NDMA convened a seminar on Climate and Disaster Risk Financing at the National University of Technology (NUTECH) here that brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from diverse sectors to enhance Pakistan’s disaster resilience.
Inam Haider also highlighted the collation of global best practices to craft Pakistan specific customized templates for all sectors impacted by national disasters to mitigate risks.
The seminar featured in-depth discussions on Pakistan’s Risk Financing profile in the face of climate-induced disasters, poly-disasters, and related emergencies.
The Panel discussion was aimed at Financial Preparedness of Pakistan vis à vis Climate and  Disaster Risks, that was participated by Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General, Imam Haider Malik, PM Coordinator on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, Resident Representative, UNDP, Samuel Rizk, Executive Director, SDPI, Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Member DRR, NDMA, Idrees Mahsud and Arup Chatterjee from ADB.
The seminar aimed to emphasize the significance of global stock takes which are required to be transformed into executive actions as adopted in previous COP events. The event also highlighted Pakistan’s narrative demonstrating regional leadership during upcoming COP29, in Azerbaijan – Nov 2024.
Secondly, it focused on development of knowledge products for enhancing advocacy on the mainstreaming of climate and disaster risk finance and its integration in national planning and development mechanisms and instruments.
The seminar was attended by key stakeholders, including government officials, Ambassadors, representatives of UN agencies, development partners, humanitarian organizations, academia, disaster response experts, media, tech professionals and youth, all dedicated to investing in disaster risk reduction and resilience building as a key component of sustainable development.

COAS appreciates Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable achievement at Paris Olympics, attributes his commitment, perseverance

RAWALPINDI, Aug 16 (APP): Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir on Friday appreciated Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable achievement of winning Pakistan’s first-ever gold medal in a singles’ event and setting a new Olympic record in javelin throw, attributing it to his commitment, perseverance, and passion for excellence.

The Army Chief hosted a ceremony at Army Auditorium GHQ to honour Olympian Arshad Nadeem’s historic achievement in Paris Olympics 2024 here, an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) news release said.

The COAS highlighted Arshad’s inspirational journey from humble beginnings to achieving greatness, emphasizing the importance of hard work and determination.

The Army Chief recognized Arshad Nadeem’s achievement as a national pride and highlighted that he has been honoured by the complete nation befitting his achievement.

The COAS reaffirmed the commitment to support and empower not only sportsmen, but the entire wealth of Pakistani youth to achieve excellence towards a prosperous Pakistan. The COAS highlighted the need for Youth Engagement, Development and Entertainment as essential cardinals of a healthy and prosperous society.

The event was attended by sports teams and legendary olympians including 1984 Olympic and National Hockey Teams, National Cricket Team, Street Football Team, Army Polo Team, Visually Impaired Cricket and Women Goal Ball Teams, Medal Winners of Common Wealth, SAF and Asian Games and participants of Paris Olympics 2024. Notable legends included Jehangir Khan, Isalah Ud Din, Shahbaz Senior, Sohail Abbas, Muhammad Asif and Aisam-ul-Haq. Tree plantation at PU CEES

LAHORE, Aug 16 (APP):Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood inaugurated tree plantation drive at College of Earth & Environmental Sciences (CEES) at the New Campus on Friday.
In this regard a ceremony was held at CEES in collaboration with the Rotary Club. On this occasion, Principal CEES Prof Dr Sajid Rasheed Ahmed, faculty members and staff were present.
In his address, PU VC Dr Khalid Mahmood urged the teachers and students to plant trees in their surroundings and look after them for a better future. Dr Sajid Rasheed said that it is the  duty of every citizen to safeguard the natural environment to overcome smog and pollution.

SC to hear Bushra Bibi, Najam-u-Saqib audio leak case

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16 (APP):The Supreme Court of Pakistan would take up case for hearing on August 19, pertaining to the alleged video leaks of Bushra Bibi and Najam-u-Saqib.
A two-judge bench of the top court comprising Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan would hear the appeal of federal government against the verdict of Islamabad High Court dated June 25.
The petition stated that the petition of Najam-u-Saqib was against summoning by the Parliamentary committee which matter has been abolished. It said that the IHC is taking action beyond the content of the petition.
The federal government through the interior ministry has named secretary parliamentary affairs division, speaker national assembly, special committee, secretary committee, national assembly secretariat, secretary defense, chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Jazz, Ufone, Zong, Telenor, PTCL, Cyber Internet Service limited, Pakistan Broadcasters Association, All Pakistan Newspapers Society and others as respondents.

Police arrest suspects for manufacturing drugs

MIRPURKHAS, Aug 16 (APP):The CIA Police on Friday conducted a successful operation and arrested four suspects in a  factory which manufacturing harmful drugs and recovered drug manufacturing machine and raw material. In-charge, CIA, Inayat Ali Zardari supervised the operation.
SSP Mirpurkhas Captain (R) Asad Ali Chaudhry told APP that during last night under the supervision of In-charge CIA  and SHO Sindhri, Inspector Niaz Khoso, the police team, on tip off, arrested four accused in a dangerous drug manufacturing factory in the limits of Goth Mir Khan Shar Taluk  Sindhri police station.
The police team recovered a large quantity of drugs, drug manufacturing machine and raw material, he added.
The SSP said that the arrested persons were identified as Abdul Latif, Ghulam Haider , Altaf Hussain and Akhtar Ali .
The police registered case and started further investigation.
