LAHORE, Aug 21 (APP): A local court on Wednesday handed over an accused, allegedly involved in spreading disinformation believed to have fueled riots in the United Kingdom, to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on a one-day physical remand.
Earlier, the FIA Cyber Crime Wing produced the accused, Farhan Asif, before the judicial magistrate in the district courts. The investigation officer requested the court to grant a 14-day physical remand of the accused for investigation and recovery of items.
However, the court granted a one-day physical remand of the accused and ordered his production on August 22, in addition to seeking a detailed report.
The FIA Cyber Crime Wing had registered a case against Farhan Asif for inciting riots through fake news in the UK. The case was registered under Sections 9 and 10A of the PECA Act, based on a complaint filed by a technical assistant of the Cyber Crime Wing.
Farhan Asif, who works as a freelancer for a news platform, is accused of disseminating false information on social media about the identity of the killers of three girls in the United Kingdom, which reportedly fueled the unrest.

Lawlessness will not be tolerated: Musadik Malik

ISLAMABAD, Aug 20 (APP): Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik said on Wednesday that while every political party has the right to protest, it must be conducted peacefully and within the bounds of the law.
Talking to a private news channel, he said that no one would be allowed to take the law into their hands under the guise of political demonstrations.
Responding to a question about the denial of permission to PTI for a political rally, Minister said, “How can we permit those who openly talk about coming to Islamabad and seizing control?”
He warned that inciting people and attacking state installations and disrespecting martyrs cannot be associated with peaceful protests.
The minister made it clear that any attempt to repeat the events of May 9, when violent protests erupted, would be thwarted.
“The state will take action against those who break the law,” he added.
Malik also highlighted the ongoing organized campaigns against the heads of state institutions, stating that the entire nation stands united in strengthening these institutions.
He said that reducing polarization and overcoming despair was needed and strengthening state institutions was crucial for national unity and stability.

UN chief highlights ‘unimaginable grief’ stemming from terror attacks

0

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 21 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has paid tributes to victims and survivors of terrorism just ahead of the international day which spotlights the issue each year.

This year’s International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism on Wednesday, takes place under the theme Voices for Peace: Victims of Terrorism as Peace Advocates and Educators.

It highlights the powerful voices of victims, acknowledging how their experiences and stories contribute to raising awareness of the enduring impact of terrorism – and can ultimately foster positive change.

The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2017 to honour and support victims and survivors, while also promoting their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The UN chief said in his statement that acts of terrorism create a “wave of unimaginable grief”.

“The scars – both visible and invisible – never fully heal,” Guterres said.

Yet, the Secretary-General recognized that through torment and tragedy, there have been examples of “resilience and the enduring power of our common humanity.”

Guterres said he is paying tribute to all victims and survivors, including those who have shared their stories – an “act of immense courage.”

“This day urges us to listen and to learn,” the UN chief said. “And it is a reminder that we must always seek out the light of hope.”

In recent months, various terrorist groups, mainly the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have stepped their terrorist attacks in Pakistan, resulting in many civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.

Ben Saul, UN expert on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, said the International Day of Remembrance provides a chance to renew global efforts to protect victims and survivors.

Many victims feel like life simply got worse in the wake of being attacked, leaving physical and psychological ‘scars’ such as losing a job, a key relationship, or the ability to focus on studies.

“I pay tribute to the many victims who show incredible courage and resilience as they ‘learn how to live again’, often with the help of their families, friends and communities,” Saul said.

Saul said victims need “comprehensive and sustained support” from their governments to rebuild their lives.

He said countries should provide long-term assistance to victims, including medical and psychological support while ensuring their protection and access to justice.

Saul emphasised the importance of independent investigations, accountability, and international solidarity in supporting victims, particularly vulnerable groups, and ensuring their full participation in legal proceedings.

“I stand ready to advise any country that wishes to strengthen protection of victims of terrorism, improve compliance with international law when countering terrorism, or address conditions conducive to terrorism,” Saul said.

LHC dismisses NAB’s appeal against providing inquiry documents to Parvez Elahi

0
LAHORE, Aug 21 (APP):A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Wednesday dismissed an appeal filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) challenging the accountability court’s order to provide inquiry documents to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president and former chief minister of Punjab, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, with a fine of Rs 200,000.
The division bench, headed by Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, heard the appeal.
The NAB had submitted that the Gujrat development projects case was pending against Parvez Elahi and other accused in the accountability court. The accountability court had ordered the provision of inquiry documents and statements of witnesses to Parvez Elahi, it added. The bureau argued that, as per rules, inquiry documents and statements of witnesses could not be provided to any accused. The bureau had pleaded with the bench to set aside the accountability court’s order.
