FO expresses grief over loss of lives in Philippines

ISLAMABAD, FEB 13 (APP): Pakistan on Tuesday expressed deep grief over the devastation caused by a landslide in the Southern Philippines which took multiple lives.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Philippines and families of the deceased,” the Ministry of Foreign Office posted on its official X account.

It further said that it was another grim reminder of the ravages caused by climate change and the need for the collective action to overcome it.

The foreign media, quoting officials in Philippines, said that the death toll from the landslide has climbed to 68 so far.

The landslide had hit the mountainous Masara village on Mindanao island.

Meeting reviews arrangements for Cholistan Rally

BAHAWALPUR, Feb 13 (APP): A high-level meeting was held under the chair of Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Zaheer Anwar Jappa to review the arrangements of the 19th TDCP International Cholistan Desert Rally and Cultural Festival that will commence on February 20.

Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa directed that all arrangements for the Cholistan Desert Rally should be completed on time, including traffic management, parking, rally routes, craft and food stalls, and sports events.

He reviewed the performance of various committees established for the rally and instructed that tourists should be facilitated during the Cholistan Desert Rally.

It was announced that the inauguration ceremony of the 19th Cholistan Desert Rally will be held on February 20, with the registration and technical inspection of the participating vehicles taking place on February 21. Furthermore, a qualifying round will be held in Cholistan on February 22, while the first round of prepared cars and dirt bike races will take place on February 23, and a cultural show will also be organized.

On February 24, the prepared category race and truck race will be held and later, a prize distribution ceremony will be organized.

The Cholistan Fort will be adorned with beautiful lights during the rally. It was also mentioned that cultural shows, folk music, qawwali night, kabaddi, traditional wrestling, volleyball, and tug of war competitions would be held at the International Cholistan Desert Rally venue.

The said meeting was attended by President Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali Maan, Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue Muhammad Sarwar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Finance Farooq Qamar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Headquarters Sumera Rabbani, Assistant Commissioner Yazman Mujahid Abbas, Assistant Commissioner Ahmedpur East Faisal Ahmed, CEO Bahawalpur West Management Company Naeem Akhtar, representative of Hobara Foundation Major (retd) Omar Mehdi, Incharge TDCP Hyder Raza Shah, District Health Officer and Focal Person Dr. Khalid Chanar, District Emergency Officer Rescue 1122 Baqir Hussain, Civil Defense Officer Fariha Jafar, District Sports Officer Fawad Anwar, and other officials from relevant departments.

PSX turns bullish, gains 161 points

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The 100-index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) turned around to bullish trend on Tuesday, gaining 161.61 points, a positive change of 0.26 percent, closing at 61,226.93 points against 61,065.32 points the previous trading day.

A total of 435,549,576 shares valuing Rs15.972 billion were traded during the day as compared to 349,975,051 shares valuing Rs.12.745 billion the last day.

Some 355 companies transacted their shares in the stock market; 188 of them recorded gains and 139 sustained losses, whereas the share prices of 28 remained unchanged.

The three top-trading companies were K-Electric Limited with 65,824,727 shares at Rs.4.15 per share, WorldCall Telecom with 30,099,719 shares at Rs.1.23 per share and Pak Refinery with 28,602,808 shares at Rs.25.63 per share.

Mari Petroleum Company Limited witnessed a maximum increase of Rs.161.03 per share price, closing at Rs.2,308.04, whereas the runner-up was Ibrahim ZIL Limited with a Rs.21.23 rise in its per share price to Rs.304.33.

Rafhan Maize Products Company Limited witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs.346.99 per share closing at Rs.8,303.01, followed by Khairpur Sugar Mills Limited with Rs.32.29 decline to close at Rs.398.25.

Power supply would remain suspended from Jamrud Grid Station on February 13 ,15 and 20 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, resultantly consumers of Taj Abad 2 feeders would face inconvenience.

Power supply would remain suspended from Peshawar University Grid Station on 14th and 19th February from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, resultantly consumers of New Hayatabad 5 and Ring Road feeders would face inconvenience.

Rise in cotton cultivation gives hope for economic revival

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP): The first plenary meeting for the cotton crop will be held on February 14 (Wednesday) to discuss and deliberate the ways and means to enhance the output of the crop during the coming season to achieve sustainable agriculture growth and economic development in the country.

The meeting will evaluate the per-maund cotton price during the forthcoming season to ensure a proper rate of return to local growers, besides encouraging the farming community to bring maximum area under cotton cultivation, said Cotton Commissioner in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research Anjum Shahzad.

Talking to APP here on Tuesday, he said that the meeting will also make deliberations to overcome the challenges faced by the cotton growers and suggest innovative measures and best crop management practices to enhance the per-acre output of cotton during the next season.

He said that due to the measures introduced by the government during last season, the cotton output gained momentum and recorded over 8.354 million bales, adding that efforts will be made to further boost the crop production during the coming season to strengthen the government’s efforts to develop the agriculture sector in the country.

He said that the uptick in the cotton sector would help to promote industrial growth and economic development in the country, adding that the government was taking steps to ensure an adequate supply of all inputs during the crop season to achieve maximum output.

Independent candidate Jamal Ahsan secures highest votes from NA-89

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP): Independent candidate Jamal Ahsan Khan has secured the highest votes in general elections across the country from NA-89, the ancestral constituency of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Mianwali.

According to the official results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Jamal Ahsan has taken a record 217,427 votes in the constituency.

The other National Assembly constituencies, where candidates secured record votes, included NA-67, Hafizabad in which independent candidate Aneeqa Mehdi Bhatti secured 211,039 votes against her opponent candidate.

Similarly, from NA-110, Jhang, independent candidate Ameer Sultan got 199,590 votes. In NA-18 Haripur, another independent candidate Umar Ayub Khan got 192,948 votes.

Umair Niazi from NA-90, Mianwali got 179,820 votes, Nawab Yusuf Talpur of Pakistan Peoples Party candidate secured 175,162 votes from NA-213 Umarkot Sindh, Aun Saqlain got 172,576 votes from NA-128 Lahore, Quaid Pakistan Muslim League-N Nawaz Sharif got 179,310 votes from NA-130 Lahore.

According to the statistics released by the ECP, as many as 150 candidates of the National Assembly have secured more than 100,000 votes in the different constituencies of the National Assembly in the general elections.
