Austrian envoy lauds Pindigheb’s educational standards

ATTOCK, Feb 13 (APP):Ambassador of Austria to Pakistan Andrea Wicke on Tuesday lauded the educational standards of a private college in the Pindigheb town of Attock.
During her visit, she lauded the college’s facilities and distributed prizes among the students who had excelled in various curricular and co-curricular activities.
“I am impressed by the quality of education being imparted at this college, Wicke said”.  “The students are well-rounded and have a strong understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of their studies.”
Wicke also praised the college’s facilities, which she said were state-of-the-art. She said that the college was providing students with the skills they needed to succeed in the global job market.
In her address to the students, Wicke urged them to continue to strive for excellence. She said that they had the potential to achieve great things if they worked hard and remained focused on their goals.
Wicke also met with the college’s management and staff, who briefed her on the college’s history and academic programs. She expressed her interest in working with the college to further promote educational cooperation between Austria and Pakistan.

KARACHI, Feb 13 (APP):Director General Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) Saeed Ahmed Sheikh, Tuesday, said that efforts were underway for revival of past glory of Radio Pakistan and for resolving financial issues of the corporation.
He was speaking during visit of New Broadcasting House PBC Karachi on the occasion of World Radio Day being observed on February 13. Station Director PBC Karachi Mehboob Sultan, Deputy Controller News Malahat Soulat, DC Engineering Imranulah Khan, DC Admin Arbab Ali Rahujo, other officers and staff member were also present at the occasion.
The DG PBC said that to make the corporation financially viable a new business plan has been envisaged and it will be presented in next meeting of Board of Directors of PBC for approval.
The business plan contains 15 points including creation of audio books, collaboration with National Book Foundation, rationalization of electricity tariff for PBC, utilization of PBC properties across the country for revenue generation in public private partnership mode and audio signal levy on vehicles travel on motorways, he informed.
The government was committed with revival of Radio Pakistan and measures were being taken in the regard, he said adding that the caretaker minister for Information Murtaza Solangi paid a visit to Radio Pakistan Islamabad on the occasion of World Radio Day and also read English news.
He said that Transmitter at Radio Pakistan Khairpur has been changed in just one day to improve outreach of the radio station while transmitters at Hyderabad and Larkana will soon be changed as well. Besides we are also working to improve digital transmission of PBC and shifting of programs on DRM across the country, he added.
He further informed that newsletter of PBC ‘Aahang’ was under publication from 1948 but it was not getting government advertisement. Now Aahang has been placed on official media list and it could get advertisement form federal and provincial governments, he added.
Another important initiative taken was aimed at making the radio more relevant with the society, he said and added that opening the doors of Radio Pakistan for youth particularly the students of colleges and universities and holding Mushairas was part of that initiative.
Seead Ahmed Sheikh urged the PBC employees to promote contacts and coordination with poets, writers and intellectuals to achieve the objectives. He also emphasized that employees must work with dedication and bring innovation in content and behavior and utilize resources of the corporation in judicious manner.
Director General, during the visit, inspected different sections of the Radio Pakistan Karachi including master Control Room (MCR) and studios and also took part in live transmission of Sindhi language program ‘Surahi Sanjh’ from Radio Pakistan Karachi on World Radio Day.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP): Like other parts of the world the world radio day, celeberated in the country here on Tuesday.

In this regard the main event in Hyderabad was held at Radio Pakistan, where Saeed Ahmed Sheikh, the Director-General of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), cut a cake at the Radio Pakistan Hyderabad’s studio.

Furthermore, the purpose to celebrate the event to continue the democratic value of Radio radio is to serve as a grassroots catalyst for connectedness within under-served groups, including immigrant, religious, minority, and poverty-stricken populations.

Celebrating radio’s rich past, ongoing relevance, and promising future is the topic chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to mark World Radio Day 2024  on 13 February 2024.

With radio having crossed the 100-year milestone, it is a significant occasion to commemorate the medium’s extensive virtues and continuing potency. However, radio faces challenges to its audience and revenue numbers from digital platforms, social media, digital and generational divides, censorship, consolidations, and economic hardships.

At this special and pivotal point in its century-long journey, UNESCO invites the global radio industry in all its many forms – commercial, public, and non-profit – to join in this global celebration of the medium.

The 2024 observance highlights the history of radio and its powerful impact on news, drama, music, and sports. It also recognizes the ongoing practical value as a portable public safety net during emergencies and power outages, caused by natural and human-made disasters, such as storms, earthquakes, floods, heat, wildfires, accidents, and warfare.

ECC approves Rs.7.4 bln ‘Ramzan Relief Package’; tariff rationalization

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet here on Tuesday approved Rs.7,492.75 million proposed Ramazan Relief Package-2024 to provide relief to the general public during the upcoming holy month of Ramazan.
The package is aimed at providing subsidy to the targeted beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) with net amount of Rs. 7,492.75 million, which is provided for in the budget for 2023-24, according to a press statement issued by the finance ministry.
The ECC meeting was presided over by Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar.
The ECC meeting was attended by the Minister for Privatization and Inter-Provincial Coordination, Fawad Hasan Fawad; Minister for Interior, Commerce & Industries, Gohar Ejaz;  Minister for Energy and Petroleum Division, Mohammad Ali; Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Sami Saeed;  Minister of Maritime Affairs, Communication and Railways. Shahid Ashraf Tarar; Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Dr. Muhammad Jehanzaeb Khan; Advisor to PM on Finance, Dr. Waqar Masood, federal secretaries, and other senior government officers of the relevant ministries.
The committee approved a summary of the Ministry of Commerce (Tariff Policy Wing), regarding “Individual Tariff Rationalization Proposals from Different Sectors for Review of Custom Duties” and advised that tariff rationalization should be coordinated with the trade policy
ECC also approved a proposal regarding “Permission to Import Wheat and Export of Wheat Flour under Export Facilitation Scheme 2021” presented to the forum by the Ministry of Commerce and directed the relevant Ministries to prepare comprehensive proposals for enhancing the opportunities for valued added exports.
The ECC also approved a summary of the Power Division regarding the “Commissioning of 1263 MW CCPP Punjab Thermal Power (Pvt) Limited, Jhang (PPTL)”.
Another proposal of the Ministry of Commerce regarding “Sharing of Subsidy on Imported Urea at 50:50 Basis Technical Supplementary Grant for Ministry of Commerce” was considered by the Committee. ECC approved the proposed release of Rs. 6 billion to the Ministry of Commerce.
The funds are meant for clearing the arrears of subsidy for the previous financial year. It was clarified that no subsidy on this account has been allowed by the government during the current year.
The ECC also directed that the provincial governments be approached to clear their respective arrears of subsidy on urea.
The Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives (PD&SI) briefed the ECC on the inflation situation in the country. The forum directed the Ministry of PD&SI to make sure that detailed analysis is carried out on the data collected by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, and the same is also presented to the Committee for taking appropriate measures in a timely manner.

Chairperson NCSW for increasing ARCC in South Punjab districts

MULTAN, Feb 13 (APP):Chairperson of National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) Nilofar Bakhtiar acknowledged the establishment of the Anti-Rape Crisis Cell (ARCC) in Multan as a big step and emphasised the need for setting up the cells in Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, and other districts.
She pledged to enhance the effectiveness of the Violence Against Women Centres and expressed determination to secure land for the Multan Women Chamber of Commerce’s building.
She emphasised the pivotal role of women in national development during a meeting at the South Punjab Secretariat here on Tuesday.
The chairperson of NCSW highlighted the importance of extending business opportunities to women, not only to enhance their financial independence but also to drive prosperity across Pakistan, ultimately boosting the overall GDP.
She said that preparations were underway for the upcoming United Nations conference in March, focusing on “Women and Economy.” Bakhtiar stressed the need to incorporate data from South Punjab women into the recommendations to be presented at the conference.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Specialized Healthcare South Punjab Afzal Nasir Khan, Additional Secretary Muhammad Farooq Dogar, Deputy Secretary Abdul Sabur Thakur and Section Officers Ahmad Rana, Wajiha Rasool and  Bariha.
Nelofar Bakhtiar advocated for the inclusion of a female representative from South Punjab on the NCSW board.

Secretary Specialized Healthcare South Punjab Nasir Afzal Khan briefed Chairperson Nilofar Bakhtiar on the challenges of poverty eradication among women in South Punjab.
He highlighted the Deep Dive Conference attended by ambassadors from 43 countries and international organisation representatives, aimed at formulating action plans for women’s development in South Punjab.
He informed Afzal Nasir that the first Anti-Rape Crisis Cell in Punjab province has been established in Multan, with 11 reported rape cases in the past three months.
He said measures such as Anti-Harassment Committees in government offices and the provision of separate washrooms for women have been implemented to ensure the safety and dignity of working women.
Mother and Child Hospitals are under construction in Multan, D.G. Khan, Layyah, and Bahawalnagar as part of the mother and child health programme, he maintained.
The chairperson of NCSW was presented with a commemorative shield and Ajrak. Later, she also visited the Anti-Rape Crisis Cell at Nishtar Hospital.

PPP’s winning candidate from NA-227 Dadu grants bail from SHC

HYDERABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The Sindh High Court here on Tuesday granted bail to Imran Zafar Laghari, Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP’s) candidate who emerged successfully on NA-227 Dadu district, in a case of alleged assault on the law enforcement agencies on election day.
According to details, Laghari secured bail against a surety of Rs30,000.
Laghari is among 7 nominated suspects in an FIR lodged at B-Section police station in Mehar taluka of Dadu on the state’s complaint.
The complainant SHO Muhammad Anwar Laghari charged Laghari, his uncle Qambar Ali Laghari, Nazar Panhwar, Aslam Solangi, and others for allegedly attacking soldiers of Pakistan Army who were deployed for the security of the ballot boxes.
They have been nominated under section 6/7 of Anti Terrorism Act (ATA) and sections 148, 149, 324 and 353 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Earlier on February 12 the Dadu police produced them before the Anti Terrorism Court in Naushehro Feroze district.

LHC orders ECP to promptly decide plea against Nawaz Sharif’s victory

LAHORE, Feb 13 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to promptly decide the application against the electoral victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif from NA-130 in the general elections 2024.
Justice Ali Baqar Najafi passed the orders while disposing of a petition filed by runner-up independent candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid, who was also a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, against the election victory of the PML-N supremo.
Dr Yasmin Rashid, through the petition, submitted that she ran for election in NA-130 against the PML-N supremo but was defeated. She alleged that vote counts in Form 45 and 47 were manipulated to declare Nawaz Sharif as a successful candidate. She pleaded with the court to direct authorities to issue results in accordance with Form 45 and stop the commission from issuing final results of the constituency. The petitioner further submitted that she had already filed an application with the ECP against the victory of the PML-N supremo.
Meanwhile, the court also dismissed two separate petitions against electoral victories of the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Hamza Shahbaz from NA-130 and PP-147 respectively. The court directed the petitioners to approach the returning officer and the ECP for redressal of their grievances as it was the first available forum.
Candidate Ishtiaq Chaudhry had challenged the victory of Nawaz Sharif from NA-130 whereas candidate Muhammad Khan Madni had challenged the victory of Hamza Shahbaz from PP-147.

Police arrest suspected outlaw in wounded condition

HYDERABAD, Feb 13 (APP):The A-Section police shot and injured a suspect during an exchange of fire near Amani Shah graveyard in Latifabad before apprehending the suspect.
The police spokesman informed here on Tuesday that 2 suspects riding on a motorbike tried to escape when they were signalled by a police mobile van to stop.
He added that the police chased the motorbike which ended up in an exchange of fire during which Ghulam Qadir Kaleri alias Qaidru sustained a gunshot and was injured.
The spokesman said that Kaleri was arrested and shifted to Liaquat University Hospital for surgery but his accomplice escaped.
He said the police were checking the previous criminal record of Kaleri.

Very cold weather likely in upper parts of country: PMD

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP):Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast mainly cold and dry weather for most parts of the country during the next 24 hours.
While very cold weather will prevail in the upper parts of the country.
According to the synoptic situation, continental air was prevailing over most parts of the country.
During the last 24 hours, cold and partly cloudy weather prevailed over most parts of the country while very cold in northern parts. However, rain occurred at isolated places in south Balochistan.
The rainfall recorded was Balochistan: Gwadar 17mm, Jiwani 07 and Pasni 04mm.
The minimum temperatures recorded were Leh -09C, Skardu, Kalam -07, Gupis, Astore -05, Bagrote -04, Srinagar, Gilgit and Hunza -03C.

Women University Swabi celebrates World Radio Day

SWABI, Feb 13 (APP):Students from the Journalism and Urdu departments of Women University Swabi on Tuesday embarked on an educational visit to Wah University to celebrate World Radio Day.
The visit was marked by a welcome from Umar Hayat Khan, the in-charge of the FM radio station at Wah University. During their visit, the students received an in-depth briefing about radio programming techniques, scripting for radio, and digital marketing. These insights were shared by Umar Hayat Khan and Waseem Khattak, the head of journalism at Women’s University Swabi.
Highlighting the practical aspect of their visit, the students recorded a special show dedicated to World Radio Day at the radio station. This educational visit not only provided the students with a hands-on learning experience but also fostered collaboration between the two universities.
