FM Jilani expresses sorrow over loss of lives in landslide in Yunnan, China

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23 (APP):Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani on Tuesday expressed sorrow over the loss of precious lives in a landslide in Yunnan, saying that Pakistan stood with China in this hour of tragedy.
“Our deepest condolences to the victims and their families, and best wishes for the ongoing search and rescue operations,” he wrote on his X handle.
According to the international media, at least 31 people died when a landslide struck a remote and mountainous part of southwestern China.

PARC using tech to empower farmers, agriculture sector: Chairman

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23 (APP):Chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), Dr Ghulam Muhammad Ali on Tuesday said that technology is rapidly reshaping agriculture in Pakistan and creating more investment opportunities which would lift rural areas and empower traditional farming techniques.
Talking to the PTV news channel, he said that PARC continued leading capacity-building programs for individuals engaged in agriculture across various regions of the province on modern agricultural techniques.
“The agriculture sector needs investment. Connecting agriculture with technology is the need of the hour,” he said.
“There is a need to improve agricultural productivity through farm mechanism and promote agricultural credit for rural economies, especially to purchase modern technologies,” he added.
PARC has also been organizing training programs to provide knowledge on the application of gain-sharing tools and share best practices to make agribusiness enterprises more productive and profitable.
He also stressed that the farmers should not only adopt this technology but they should also create awareness among other farmers and guide them properly regarding the hydroponics technology to avoid food shortages in our country in the future.
Replying to a question, he said that agricultural research can play a major role in improving the productivity of these crops to enhance their profitability for the farmer, adding that it is the need of the hour to strengthen industry-academia ties on promote modern agricultural technology for which agriculture scientists will also have to make every effort to solve the problems of farmers.
PARC had also started developing new varieties of high-yielding seeds of major and minor crops to enhance per-acre crop output to tackle the growing demand for food, he added.
PARC also stressed that every scientist should contribute to promoting research culture in the council, he mentioned.

SCCI welcomes reopening of Torkham border

PESHAWAR, Jan 23 (APP):Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) on Tuesday welcomed the reopening of the Torkham border for trade after successful Pak-Afghan talks and said that bilateral trade will be promoted after this important development.
In a joint statement issued here, President SCCI Fuad Ishaq and senior vice President Sanaullah Khan and vice President, Ijaz Khan Afridi said the opening of the Torkham border will not only promote mutual trade but also address difficulties faced by the traders and exporters owing to the closure of the border since the last 10 days.
The SCCI office bearers hoped the bilateral trade and export process would speed up after the reopening of Torkham border as a result of successful talks between Pak-Afghan governments and the administration.
The SCCI chief said the reopening of Pak-Afghan border will enhance bilateral trade and facilitation would be available to the trading community.
Faud Ishaq and his cabinet members thanked the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Corps Commander Peshawar, IGFC, border management authorities, security forces, customs and relevant departments for resolving this important issue.

He said this in a Media Session at Peshawar Press Club regarding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s code of conduct for media during electoral proceedings.

He said that accreditation cards are being issued to media representatives according to the prescribed procedures to cover elections properly. Aziz Bahadur informed the journalists that preparations for the elections on February 8 are in their final stages, and arrangements for peaceful and free elections are being made in continuous coordination with administrative bodies and other relevant authorities.
Responding to media queries, Joint Commissioner Bahadur mentioned that accreditation cards for reporters and observers carrying out training for polling staff and security personnel provide access to polling stations.
He also clarified that the results of postal ballots will be counted alongside the preliminary results. Asif Ali Yasin, Director Elections, presented a comprehensive overview of the ethical framework and legal framework concerning elections, ensuring fair and reliable elections.
The session saw active participation from attendees, with many engaging in insightful discussions and posing relevant questions, all of which were addressed by the speakers.
Earlier, President of the Peshawar Press Club, Arshad Aziz Malik, expressed gratitude for the Session organized by the Election Commission of Pakistan, acknowledging the valuable insights gained.

SBP to announce monetary policy on January 29

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23 (APP):State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will announce Monetary Policy on January 29 in a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee.
According to the SBP’s press release, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet on Monday, January 29 to decide about the Monetary Policy, a press release issued by SBP said.
Governor, SBP Jameel Ahmad will announce the monetary policy decision at a press conference on the same day after the MPC meeting.

Textile unit imposed Rs 100,000 fine

FAISALABAD, Jan 23 (APP):The district environment department imposed Rs 100,000 fine on a textile unit for causing pollution, near here on Tuesday.
The fine was imposed on the unit located on Sargodha road in violation of Punjab Environmental Protection (Smog Prevention and Control) rules.
Separately, a sizing unit was also imposed Rs 100,000 fine on burning low quality material in a boiler on Daewoo road.
Deputy Director Environment Johar Abbas said here that Rs 22,000 fine was also imposed on 11 smoke emitting vehicles in the city.

Jan 26 last date for admission in B.Ed program

FAISALABAD, Jan 23 (APP):University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has invited applications for admission in B.Ed program (1.5 years) and its last date is January 26, 2024.
According to Principal UAF Community College Prof Dr Anjum Zia, the degree holders of BS/BS (Honors)/MA or MSc can apply for the program.
The admission is opened for B.Ed degree (Morning-Evening and Weekend) programs at Main Campus whereas weekend program at Community College PARS campus.
The application form can be downloaded from the university website or can be obtained from Community College Office PARS Campus or College Office, Old Zoology Department Main Campus, he added.
