China triumphs over Pakistan, advances in Asian Champions Trophy final

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): Hosts China outplayed Pakistan by 2-0 in shootouts, after a tense 1-1 draw in regular time, in the semifinal of Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2024.

China beat Pakistan by 2-0 and secured their spot in the Champions Trophy final for the first time. Held at the Moqi Hockey Training Base, the semifinal saw Chinese goalkeeper Caiyu Wang’s exceptional display, keeping Pakistan from scoring during the shootouts.

China’s Yuanlin Lu gave his team an early lead with a powerful drag-flick in the 18th minute, but Pakistan responded through Ahmed Nadeem’s equalizer in the 37th minute.

Pakistan displayed top notch game and tried several attacking moves, but China’s defense held strong. Benhai Chen and Chanliang Lin paved the way by scoring to send China to their first-ever final.

“We came into this match prepared and full of enthusiasm. It’s a great moment for us,” said Hero of the Match Yuanlin Lu, who led China’s charge with confidence and tactical awareness. China will face India in the final on Tuesday (September 17).

New football central studio launched

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalization Committee has launched its new Football Central Studio, a cutting-edge facility designed to connect the football community in a creative, engaging and professional environment.

Located at the Football House, the studio will serve as a hub for fans, national team players, media and influencers, said a press release.

The studio will provide a space for media and influencers to produce high-quality videos, interviews and other digital media content.

Speaking at the launch, Haroon Malik, Chairman of the Pakistan Football Federation Normalization Committee (NC), said,

“The Football Content Studio represents our vision to make football more accessible and engaging for everyone. We are providing a space where anyone passionate about the game whether they’re a fan, player, or reporter can showcase their love for football in a professional environment. This is a new chapter in the way football is experienced and discussed in Pakistan.”

Malik emphasized the unique opportunities, the studio presents for national team players, who can now utilize this platform to connect with their fanbase in meaningful ways. Players will be able to share their personal journeys, training routines, and behind-the-scenes content, all while developing valuable media skills that will serve them in their careers both on and off the field. We are empowering our players to tell their own stories.

He said, “We want to ensure that this studio becomes a home for anyone who wants to contribute to the football narrative in Pakistan. Whether it’s through serious analysis or fun conversations, this space will help create a more vibrant and inclusive football culture.”

IFA conducts 24,137 operations, serves notices to 9346 food outlets

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): Director of the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA), Irfan Nawaz Memon, chaired a performance meeting of the authority, during which he was informed that 24,137 operations had been conducted so far, resulting in improvement notices being issued to 9,346 businesses.
Acting Deputy Director Operations (DDO) of Islamabad Food Authority (IFA), Aneeq Anwar, while sharing the performance report of the authority, stated that the authority has imposed fines amounting to Rs. 14.36 million on 804 establishments found violating health standards. The crackdown also led to the sealing of 172 outlets for selling harmful products.
Meanwhile, licenses have been granted to 107 food points in Islamabad, reflecting the authority’s efforts to formalize the industry. In response to public complaints, 15 legal cases were registered, following action on 477 citizen reports.
He said that with an unwavering commitment to quality assurance, the authority’s latest report underscored its relentless pursuit of adherence to food safety standards across the Federal Capital.
On the occasion, he appealed to the masses to cooperate with the food department in identifying illegal food production units that were operating in small houses to ensure public safety.
Notably, the authority imposed a complete ban on the sale of Chinese salt, and gutka, emphasizing its commitment to upholding stringent standards of food safety and hygiene.
Irfan Nawaz Memon reiterated the authority’s dedication to fostering a healthy environment for the citizens of the federal capital.
He emphasized that strict action should be continued against those food outlets that were involved in selling adulterated or unhygienic food items.
The safety of citizens was the topmost priority of the IFA and no negligence would be tolerated in this regard, he warned.
To raise public awareness, several campaigns on healthy food are ongoing. Director Irfan Memon urged his team to expedite their efforts, especially focusing on the sale of harmful milk. He also emphasized the need to expand licensing efforts across the city.

Gunvor Group Chairman, Total Energies VP meet PM to discuss investment in petroleum sector

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): Gunvor Group Chairman Torbjorn Tornqvist and Vice President Oceania & Southeast Asia Total Energies Mehmet Celepoglu Monday called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and discussed potential investment in Pakistan’s energy sector.

During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted that after attaining stability, the country’s economy was now moving on the path of growth and development.

He said rapid reforms were underway to increase the investment and business activities, and economic policies were yielding positive results.

He emphasized that the government was removing all the barriers for foreign investment in Pakistan.

Chairman Torbjorn Tornqvist expressed the Gunvor Group’s keen interest in investment in the petroleum sector of Pakistan.

The prime minister was told that the Gunvor Group had already signed an agreement to acquire 50% shares of Total Parco.

The Gunvor Group chairman lauded that positive steps were being taken under the prime minister’s leadership for promoting investment in the country.

The prime minister directed the relevant authorities to provide all possible facilities to the Gunvor Group.

The meeting was also attended by federal ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Dr Musadik Malik, PM’s Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and other relevant high officials.

ADB lauds comprehensive reforms, reaffirms continued support

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP):The President, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Masatsugu Asakawa here on Monday lauded the government for undertaking comprehensive reforms, leading to progressive signs of economic recovery.
During a meeting with Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Minister, Ahad Cheema, he reaffirmed ADB’s continued support to Pakistan for complementing its development and reform agenda.
President ADB reposed his trust in Pakistan’s reform agenda and appreciated the required tough stabilization measures taken by the government to bring about macroeconomic stability in the country.
He also assured of bank’s continued support in the areas of Public Private Partnership, climate and disaster resilience enhancement, Domestic Resource Mobilization, promoting Women Inclusive Finance and Energy Sector reforms.
Meanwhile, appreciating ADB’s long-standing and steadfast support to Pakistan, Minister Ahad Cheema briefed the President on a series of reforms introduced by the government.
The key reforms include enhancing tax revenues, improving financial sustainability of energy sector, reduction in untargeted subsides and scaling up social protection.
Asakawa together with Secretary Economic Affairs, Kazim Niaz also attended the ground-breaking ceremony of a new ADB office building in Islamabad.
The new building will house ADB’s Pakistan Resident Mission and when completed is expected to serve as ADB’s development and coordination hub responding to evolving country and regional context.
Speaking on the occasion, Kazim Niaz said that the ADB’s own building in Islamabad would mark a new exciting chapter in the enduring and trusted partnership between Pakistan and ADB since 1966.
He noted that ADB’s decision to build its building in Islamabad, which would be ADB’s 4th own building in the entire region, is yet another manifestation of deep-rooted cooperation.

Gold prices all-time high

LAHORE, Sep 16 (APP):Driven by an increase in international rates, gold prices in Pakistan witnessed a record increase and reached an all-time high on Monday.
The price of 24-karat gold per tola shot up by a massive Rs1,700, reaching Rs268,000 in the local market.
According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) sources, the price of 10-gram gold of 24 karats also registered a huge rise, increasing by Rs1,458 to settle at Rs229,76.
In the international market, the price of gold rose to $2,587 per ounce, marking a $10 rise during the trading day, as per the APGJSA. Meanwhile, silver prices remain stable at Rs2,950.

US Under Secretary of State calls on DPM Ishaq Dar

ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): US Under Secretary of State John Bass and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Elizabeth Horst Monday called on Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar in his office.

In the meeting, they discussed Pakistan-US bilateral relations and ongoing collaboration projects, a Foreign Office statement said.

The Deputy PM underlined the importance of positive and productive engagement between Pakistan and the United States.

Meanwhile, according to a press release issued on Monday by the US Embassy, U.S. Acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass met with DPM Ishaq Dar and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.

They discussed approaches to expanding bilateral cooperation on economic and security issues, including countering terrorism and violent extremism, and the importance of fostering regional stability and prosperity.

Under Secretary Bass expressed his gratitude for Pakistan’s continued cooperation in assisting Afghans in resettlement pathways to the United States.

The Under Secretary congratulated the Deputy Prime Minister on Pakistan’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term and expressed the United States’ interest in working closely with the Government of Pakistan during its tenure.
