Mobile manufacturing leads ‘Make-in-Pakistan’ policy: Razak

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (APP):Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood on Tuesday said that mobile manufacturing in Pakistan is part of the government’s ‘Make in Pakistan’ policy which will boost domestic exports.

“Our vision is to make Pakistan a hub of mobile phone manufacturing and export and the export of mobile phones will soon start that will earn foreign exchange for the country”, he said.

A meeting was presided over by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood to examine progress made towards export of locally-manufactured mobile phones from Pakistan under the ‘Make-in-Pakistan’ policy said a press release issued.

The adviser was informed that the success of the ‘Mobile Phone Manufacturing Policy’ was also evident from the import figures during the first five months of the current financial year (FY) as compared to the same period in the previous FY.

In the meeting, the adviser was informed that in Pakistan, about 80 to 85 percent of the market is for phones priced at $200 or below.

He was informed that as a result of Mobile Phone Manufacturing Policy, which contains duty incentives for enhancing mobile phone assembling in Pakistan, the majority of phones cheaper than $200, are now assembled in Pakistan.

He was also informed that this was complemented by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)’s Device Identification and Registration System (DIRBS) which has curbed the smuggling of mobile phones.

He was further informed that in terms of market shares, the Chinese manufacturers control about half of the market as they were quick to utilise the incentives offered by the government and hence have the “First-Mover’s advantage” in the market.
These assemblers are importing mobiles in Semi Knocked-Down (SKD) condition which are then assembled in Pakistan.

This is not only saving foreign exchange but also boosting industrial activity and creating employment.

He was further informed that Samsung has also recently started assembling mobile phones in Pakistan.

The import of manufactured or Completely Built Units (CBU) is on the decline while that of mobile phone components (CKD) is on the rise.

During July-November 2021, the import of CBU decreased by 73% to USD$ 179 million as compared to USD $661 million during the same period last year.
This saved USD$ 410 million in foreign exchange.

In contrast, the import of mobile phone components for local assembly increased by 407% to USD$ 674 million from USD $133 million last year.

Razak Dawood said that all over the world, smartphones have now become a necessity as many SMEs now run their businesses on mobile phones.

At the start of this government, Pakistan was a net importer of mobile phones but the situation has now been reversed and jobs are also being created in this sector.

Women empowerment leads to prosperity, keep population growth in check: President Alvi

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi Tuesday said women empowerment will lead to economic prosperity and help control population growth in the country.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of 22nd Annual Population Research Conference arranged by Population Association of Pakistan and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) here.

The theme of the conference was Population Challenges in a Changing World.

Women empowerment leads to prosperity, keep population growth in check: President Alvi

Dr Arif Alvi addressing the inaugural session of the 22nd Annual Conference of the Population Association of Pakistan, in Islamabad, on 07-12-2021.

He said women had the opportunity to get financial independence by acquiring digital and marketing skills and selling products while staying at home.

The President said rising population was a major challenge for Pakistan which had been tackling the issue for the last many decades.

“Message of fewer children, prosperous family should have reached everybody.”

He said Ulema had supported efforts of the government for controlling population in the country.

He opined that with better communication skills, people could be influenced and convinced to keep their families small.
Media had a significant role to play to disseminate the message regarding population control, he added.

The President said in the last two years during the coronavirus pandemic, due to role of media, message about the disease reached everyone.

People of Pakistan cooperated with the government to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, he said adding contrarily there was resistance in the west against mandatory rules to control coronavirus.

He said priority should be to deliver a simple message of keeping balance in having a family. Lady health workers and mid wives would be critical in carrying the message to families.

He said hurdles in family planning were malnutrition in women and neonatal deaths. “Stunting has long term implications and there is no catch up growth to recover from stunting.”

In Pakistani society, family planning was a sensitive issue, he said adding according to an estimate eight million pregnancies occur every year and four million of them were unwanted pregnancies.

He underlined the need for availability of long acting contraceptives.

He was of the view that provinces like Balochistan had an incentive to grow their population as state’s financial resources were given on the basis of population.

Financial resources to provinces should be given on some other basis instead of only relying on population so that Balochistan could have incentive to keep population growth low, he asserted.

The President said the challenge of lack of resources for education and health sectors needed to be addressed. “Investment in education and health makes a nation developed.”

Talking about economy, he said Pakistan’s exports were increasing but imports were also surging while one of the reasons for the present economic difficulties was the supply chain issues in the global economy.

He said the government was bearing the burden of mistakes of the past governments, corruption and mismanagement.
The President hoped that in the next 10 years Pakistan would acquire a unique position by utilizing the intellectual abilities of its people especially youth.

He said poverty was the reason for more births as people saw security in more children while rich people produced fewer children.

The representatives of Population Association of Pakistan and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) also spoke on the occasion.
