Lawyers should play role for strengthening democracy, Parliament: Aimal Wali

KARACHI, Sep 25 (APP): Awami National Party chief Aimal Wali Khan on Wednesday said the Parliament being a supreme institution could help take the country forward and legal fraternity should play its due role for strengthening of democracy.

Addressing the Karachi Bar Association, he said the historic Bar having representation of advocates of all nationalities, should work for the basic human rights of oppressed people, supremacy of the Parliament and the Constitution, and provision of speedy justice to the people.

He said the lawyers always remained on the forefront for the supremacy of the Parliament and strengthening democracy. The ANP, he said, was also part of the lawyers’ movement, and even lost its 40 workers in the May 12 tragedy, he claimed.

Recalling the role of his grandfather in the passage of 1973 Constitution, Aimal said Khan Abdul Wali Khan always condemned those judges who had supported martial law regimes.

Economic reforms initiated by govt to enhance investors confidence, boost business activity: Malik

ISLAMABAD, Sep 25 (APP):Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervaiz Malik on Wednesday said that the government has taken steps for economic reforms to enhance investors’ confidence and boost business activity in the country.
          Talking to State News Television, he said that credit goes to Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif for making hard decisions in the larger interest of the country. Both the leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-N had brushed aside political interests, and taken initiatives for public interest, he added.
         Commenting on the continuity of the IMF program, he said that the IMF had expressed confidence in the present leadership and policies of the government and approved the financial package for Pakistan.
           This financial package would also enhance the confidence of the businessmen in this country, he said. He further said that government under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif is making all-out efforts to provide maximum relief to the common man.

DPM Dar chairs third meeting of Committee to review E&P sector challenges

ISLAMABAD, Sep 25 (APP): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday chaired the third meeting of the Committee established by the prime minister to develop a comprehensive action plan to address the challenges faced by the Exploration and Production (E&P) sector.

The Committee reviewed progress on the development of an integrated energy plan with assistance from renowned international consultants; the proposed amendments to the OGRA Ordinance to establish a mechanism for monthly or quarterly gas tariff adjustments; and strategies for optimizing gas utilization from dedicated fields.

The Committee also examined plans for: restructuring both Sui companies to transition away from an asset-based fixed return regime; digitization and automation of processes to streamline regulatory approvals; and introduction of a dedicated one-window facilitation service at both federal and provincial levels.

The Deputy PM emphasized the necessity of establishing firm timelines for the completion of all initiatives.

The participants included the Federal Minister for Planning and Special Initiatives, Secretary Petroleum, Secretary Power, senior government officials, and representatives from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), and members representing the petroleum industry.

Women’s role imperative for national progress, prosperity: Governor Punjab

FAISALABAD, Sep 25 (APP):Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan on Wednesday said that women were sharing 52 percent population and their proactive role was imperative to materialize the dream of national progress and prosperity.
Talking to media persons during inaugural ceremony of a display & facilitation center for business women at Faisalabad Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FWCCI) here, he said that Pakistan was passing through a crucial stage. He said the government was concentrating for women empowerment. In this connection, various programs were chalked out to facilitate this community in all sectors including business, he added.
He said that women were bestowed with tremendous abilities and capabilities. Hence, they should come forward and prove their mettle in national development, he added.
Responding to a question, he said that another constitutional amendment had become imperative to remove the ills prevailed because of the 19th Amendment which had totally eroded the very spirit of the 18th Amendment.
He said that the cases of poor people were still taking three generations for resolution of one marla land dispute. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) fully convinced to establish constitutional courts so that the judges could pay their full attention on the resolution of the cases filed by the common people, he added.
Responding to another query, the Governor said that vice chancellors of the universities would be appointed purely on merit, adding that young and energetic persons were also under consideration so that the education section could be improved on modern scientific lines.
Earlier, the Governor also inaugurated the Display & Facilitation Center while President FWCCI Robina Amjad and others were also present on the occasion.

Bangladesh, Pakistan pledge to boost ties at a top-level meeting in New York

NEW YORK, Sep 26 (APP):Leaders of Pakistan and Bangladesh met Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 79th session in New York, with both sides agreeing to forge stronger ties and enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields.
It was the first meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh after he assumed office last month following the ouster  of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina whose resigned amid mounting pressure from a student-led uprising in the country that saw hundreds killed.
“Both sides agreed that there was a need to work closely at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels for the progress and development of the peoples of both countries,” a press release issued by Pakistani prime minister’s office said.
On his part, the Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s strong fraternal ties with Bangladesh, based on common faith, history, and culture. He also emphasized that both sides need to work together to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
“Capitalizing on the immense goodwill and warmth among the people of the two countries, he encouraged fostering relations through parliamentary exchanges, people-to-people contacts, and interactions among sports-persons, academics, artists, students, etc,” the press release said.
In addition, it said, the Prime Minister extended an invitation to the Bangladesh Chief Executive to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his convenience, “reinforcing the importance of regional cooperation and dialogue.”

NA body discusses Seed Amendment Bill 2024

ISLAMABAD, Sep 25 (APP):The Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research met here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Syed Tariq Hussain and discussed the Seed Amendment Bill, 2024.
According to press release issued by National Assembly Secretariat, he Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain informed the committee that telephonic consent from provincial governments through their respective Chief Secretaries had been secured, and resolutions from provincial assemblies, as required under Article 144 of the Constitution, would be submitted before the Bill is passed into law by Parliament.
The ministry, in consultation with stakeholders and based on the committee’s recommendations, proposed several amendments to the Bill.
The amendments included replacing the Chairman with the Managing Director (MD), changing the appointing authority of the MD from the Prime Minister to the Federal Government, and substituting the Federal Minister as the head of the Board of Governors instead of the Prime Minister.
Additionally, the MD’s term would be set for three years, extendable once for two years, contingent on performance.
The Committee recommended defining the term “Expert” in the Bill, stipulating a minimum of 10 years of experience and a Master’s degree.
It also suggested increasing the number of experts from two to four, with representation from all provinces. The Plant Breeders Department should also be included as a Member of the Board of Governors to ensure better coordination.
Regarding financial matters, the Committee advised that the term “Funds” should be clarified in the Bill, with input from the Ministry of Finance.
This includes clear definitions of local and foreign currency accounts, ensuring audit and third-party evaluations of all accounts. The Committee advised that the Authority should not raise funds independently. It was also recommended that the rules of business for the Authority be formulated within two months of the Bill’s passage.
The Committee strongly emphasized the need for stringent legal actions against sellers of counterfeit seeds, recommending both fines and imprisonment.
The maximum imprisonment period was extended to two years, and fines were raised to Rs.2 million. The Committee also called for action against Seed Inspectors of that particular area under the ESTACODE efficiency and discipline rules.
The Committee expressed dissatisfaction with last year’s 781 filed cases and the sealing of only 23 companies involved in selling fake seeds. The Ministry updated the Committee on the progress of the Special Inquiry Commission’s investigation into the sale of counterfeit seeds, with the final report expected within the next two days.
Additionally, the Department of Plant Protection was instructed to collaborate with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) for enhancing locust control operations and to report back on short-term overhaul strategies.
The Ministry was also asked to investigate the reasons behind the non-utilization of a $200 million World Bank loan, acquired in 2019 and later returned, resulting in a significant loss to the national exchequer.

PM expresses satisfaction over approval of IMF package

NEW YORK, Sep 25 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed satisfaction over the approval of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) package of US$7 billion for Pakistan.

The prime minister, in a statement issued by the PM Office, said that the process for economic reforms was underway and after attaining economic stability, efforts would continue to achieve the goals of economic growth and development.

He said the boom in investment and business activities, which was the result of hard work by the government’s economic team, was a welcoming sign.

“Besides notable diplomatic accomplishments, another significant achievement has been the surge in foreign remittances sent by Pakistani expatriates,” the prime minister remarked.

He believed that it could be the last programme with IMF if such progress continued.

The prime Minister thanked the friendly countries, especially Saudi Arabia, China and the United Arab Emirates for extending support concerning the IMF package.

He also extended gratitude to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and her entire team.

The PM also thanked the entire government economic team, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar; Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb; Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir; Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervaiz Malik; Pakistan’s Ambassador in China Khalil Hashmi; the ambassadors of China, UAE, and Saudi Arabia in Pakistan; and Secretary Finance for their efforts and hard work to get the programme approved.

The prime minister thanked all the provincial governments, especially Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah and Balochistan CM Sarfaraz Bugti.

NTDC successfully launches SAP Finance Module

ISLAMABAD, Sep 25 (APP):The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has achieved a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey with the successful implementation of the SAP Finance Module, a key component of its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
A ceremony marking this achievement was held at NTDC’s office in Shaheen Complex, where the Information Technology department team initiated the Go-Live for the Finance Module, signaling a major step towards modernizing the company’s operations, said a press release.
Deputy Managing Directors Engr. Qaiser Khan (P&E) and Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto (AD&M) congratulated the teams of Information Technology and Finance Directorates on this success. They directed the development of comprehensive training programs, including videos and manuals, for NTDC employees nationwide.
The new module is expected to facilitate NTDC’s transition from manual processes to a paperless environment, significantly enhancing operational efficiency, they added.
Waseem Saadat, Chief Financial Officer and Khalid Mahmood, Chief Information Officer, along with their teams and power users, provided updates to NTDC management on the Finance Module and the overall ERP implementation. They emphasized that this system will enhance transparency, accuracy, productivity, and efficiency across the organization.
The NTDC IT team is progressing towards the full implementation of SAP, focusing on SAP S/4HANA Finance. This comprehensive approach underscores NTDC’s commitment to a full-scale digital transformation.
The ceremony was attended by key NTDC officials, including Engr. Sohail Mumtaz Bajwa, GM (HR); Muhammad Ibrahim, GM (Media & PR); Amir Rasheed, DG IT Network; Muhammad Farooq Shaukat, DG IT Software; Mr, Zakaullah Project Manager, Mr. Atif Riaz, Functional Managers Finance; and Tashbih-ul-Hassan, Manager Finance. Representatives from Siemens SAP vendor and PWC PMQA were also present at the event, highlighting the collaborative nature of this significant undertaking.
