LAHORE, Sep 22 (APP):The United States (US) Mission to Pakistan and its partner Urban Word on Sunday hosted a showcase at the Alhamra Arts Center to celebrate the first-ever Pakistan Youth Poet Laureate programme.
Out of 19 finalists, two talented young Pakistani poets—one writing in English and the other in Urdu – were announced as the first Pakistan Youth Poets Laureate at the event. The two winners will visit Washington D.C. to perform their poetry at the Kennedy Center in April 2025. An anthology of poems by the poet finalists entitled, Jashn, was published and distributed at the event.
This is the first project of its kind internationally, created by Urban Word, the award-winning youth literary arts organization that launched the National Youth Poet Laureate Programme in the US in 2008. This US programme has garnered national acclaim
Starting in February 2023, this US-funded programme invited Pakistani writers aged 16-25 to submit original poems in English or Urdu. The contest received more than 1,400 submissions from all over Pakistan. A panel of judges selected 10 poets in each language for the inaugural cohort of Pakistan Youth Poet Laureate finalists.
Over the past five months, award-winning poets and artists mentored the programme finalists, who then submitted full poetry portfolios evaluated by leaders in Pakistan’s arts and literary community.
US Consulate General Lahore’s Public Affairs Officer Sandeep Paul praised the poets, stating, “I am quite impressed by these remarkable and inventive poets, who have shared their perspectives through their art.  I hope they will inspire more young Pakistanis to tell their own stories in their unique voices.”
Urban Word founder Michael Cirelli expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort behind the programme. “We appreciate the strong partnership with the US Embassy and consulates across Pakistan, as well as Pakistani organizations, colleges and universities, poets and leaders from every corner of Pakistan,” said Cirelli.
He said, “We are excited to celebrate the next generation of poets and writers who will add to the storied poetic tradition of Pakistan; and the work of these poets is timely, visionary, and necessary now more than ever.”
Project Director Sara Zaidi echoed, “There is amazing talent in Pakistan, and this celebration of youth poets showcases the next generation of torchbearers of both poetic tradition and innovation.”

CM Murad calls for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, even amid religious differences

0
KARACHI, Sep 22 (APP):Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a divine blessing for all of humanity and his life serves as a model of obedience to Allah, justice, compassion, and love.
“The Holy prophet (PBUH) exemplified these virtues and also demonstrated the importance of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, even amid religious differences.”
This he said while speaking at the ‘Seerat Conference: The Importance of Interfaith Respect and Cooperation’ organised by the Religious Affairs Department at Liaquat Memorial Library on Sunday evening.
Minister Auqaf & Religious Affairs Syed Riaz Shah Shirazi, the host of the conference, Zulfiqar Shah, provincial ministers, religious scholars Hafiz Abdul Rehman Salfi, Maula Baqar Hussain, Alhaj Ghulam Mohammad Sohoo, Secretary Auqaf & Religious Affairs Mureed Rahimo, provincial secretaries and others attended the conference in a large number.
Murad Shah said that the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offers profound lessons on mutual respect and unity.
“The birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is a divine blessing for all of humanity, he said and added that he was sent as a mercy to the worlds, and his life exemplifies obedience to Allah, justice, compassion, and love.” He added that the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) remain a guiding light for resolving modern-day challenges, providing a framework for peace, harmony, and societal unity.
The CM quoting Surah Al-An’am, said that Allah stresses the injunction to respect the beliefs of others: “And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge.” He said this verse highlights the importance of tolerance and respect for differing beliefs as a foundation for peaceful coexistence.
He said that Islam guarantees the protection of minority rights within an Islamic state, underscoring the shared basic beliefs of all revealed religions, particularly the oneness of Allah. He referenced Surah Ash-Shura, which calls for unity in religion, stating, “He has ordained for you of religion what he enjoined upon Noah and what We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, Moses, and Jesus — to establish the religion and not be divided therein.” This, Shah explained, reflects Islam’s encouragement of dialogue and the promotion of shared values among diverse religious communities.
Talking about the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the CM recalled that in the 6th year of Hijra, when the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions were stopped at the outskirts of Mecca, a peace agreement was negotiated with the Quraish despite seemingly unfavourable terms.
“The treaty helped avert bloodshed and eventually paved the way for the peaceful conquest of Mecca,” he said, noting the Prophet’s (PBUH) remarkable patience and commitment to peace, which culminated in a general amnesty for the Meccans who had once opposed Islam.
The CM discussed the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) response to the hostility he faced in Taif. “Despite being rejected and harmed in Taif, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) chose forgiveness over vengeance, praying for the guidance of its people,” he said.
He added that this act of compassion eventually led to the people of Taif embracing Islam.
Murad Shah urged Muslims to embody the values of respect, love, and compassion, which are at the heart of the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings. “In a world torn apart by mistrust and conflicts, fostering mutual respect between different religions, sects and nations is essential,” he said.
He added that following the example of the Prophet (PBUH), Muslims can achieve both personal success and contribute to global peace and harmony.
Talking about Islam’s egalitarian principles, the CM said that Islam makes no distinction between people based on race, colour, or nationality. Quoting a hadith, he reminded the audience that all humans are children of Prophet Adam (A.S) and Bibi Hawa (A.S), underscoring the shared bonds of humanity.
Murad Ali Shah also highlighted the need to instil high moral values in the younger generation, urging Muslims to promote respect for all humanity. He called for an end to the global climate of mistrust and urged reflection on the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) to counter misinformation and hostility.
The event concluded with prayers for unity, peace, and guidance for all of humanity, reinforcing the conference’s message of interfaith respect and cooperation.

UN adopts Pact for the Future aimed at addressing global challenges; Pakistan says text ‘not perfect’

By Iftikhar Ali

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 22 (APP): World leaders on Sunday adopted a Pact for the Future aimed at strengthening global governance to address challenges ranging from conflict to climate change and human rights, despite last-minute objections from a group of countries led by Russia.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who organized the “Summit of the Future,” had billed it as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to reshape human history by rekindling international cooperation

The pact aims to strengthen global governance and tackle key challenges facing humanity, including sustainable development, international peace, and technological innovation, youth and future generations and transforming global governance. It also proposes detailed action plans to address these challenges.

The adoption of the text faced a brief delay when Russia’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, Sergey Vershinin, introduced an amendment emphasizing the “principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of states” and urging the U.N. to avoid duplicating efforts.

Russia’s objections were backed by allies Belarus, North Korea, Iran, Nicaragua and Syria, but its amendment did not pass in a motion to take no action. Pakistan and China abstained.

As the President of UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang of Cameroon, banged the gravel to signal the adoption of the Pact, loud applause ranged out in the packed hall where dozens of world leaders and high-level delegates were present

Asked by APP for comments, Pakistan UN Ambassador Munir Akram said that while the documents was”not perfect”, it will advance world community’s common objectives.

“Pakistan has worked diligently for the successful adoption of the Pact for the Future,” he stressed.

“Our primary goal has been to ensure that the Pact upholds the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, enhances equity among and within nations, accelerates progress on Agenda 2030 and the SDGs (sustainable development goals), and strengthens the UN’s ability to advance peace, development and human rights.”

Ambassador Akram added, “While the negotiation process was not satisfactory, and the Pact is not perfect, we believe it will advance these common objectives of the international community.”

In the adopted version, leaders pledged to bolster the multilateral system to “keep pace with a changing world” and to “protect the needs and interests of current and future generations” facing “persistent crisis.”

“We believe there is a path to a brighter future for all of humanity,” the document says

The pact outlines 56 “actions,” including commitments to multilateralism, upholding the U.N. Charter and peacekeeping.

It also calls for reforms to international financial institutions and the U.N. Security Council, along with renewed efforts to combat climate change, promote disarmament, and guide the development of artificial intelligence.

During the negotiations phase, Guterres had urged nations to show “vision” and “courage,” calling for “maximum ambition” to strengthen international institutions that struggle to respond effectively to today’s threats.

The fight against global warming was one of the sticking points in the negotiations, with references to the “transition” away from fossil fuels having disappeared from the draft text weeks ago, before being re-inserted.

Developing countries have been particularly vocal in demanding concrete commitments on the reform of international financial institutions, aiming to secure easier access to preferential financing, especially considering the impacts of climate change.

Yang, the General Assembly President, hailed the adoption as a “pledge to address immediate crises” and “lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order.”

The Global Digital Compact outlines principles for an open and human-centered digital future, while the Declaration on Future Generations calls for recognizing the rights of future generations in decision-making processes.

Yang emphasized the need for solidarity and multilateral cooperation in implementing the pact’s commitments. He described the upcoming Summit of the Future as a “call to action” to shape a future that protects both humanity and the planet.

In his address, Guterres, the UN chief, said he called for the Summit of Future “because 21st-century challenges require 21st-century solutions” and “we need tough decisions to get back on track.”

Stating that the world is going through a time of turbulence and transition, Guterres said: “We cannot wait for perfect conditions.”

“We must take the first decisive steps towards updating and reforming international cooperation to make it more networked, fair and inclusive now, and today, thanks to your efforts, we have,” said Guterres.
