KP govt fully committed to promoting cooperation with China: Shafi Jan

PESHAWAR, Dec 22 (APP): Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Information, Shafi Jan, said that the provincial government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is fully committed to promoting cooperation with China at all levels.
Whether it is infrastructure, education, technology, or industrial development, the government is striving to utilize China’s experience and resources for the development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He expressed these views during his visit to China Window, the Chinese cultural center established in Peshawar, while addressing a ceremony held for the distribution of certificates among students who completed a digital media course.
Shafi Jan stated that examples of Pak-China friendship are cited across the world and the main reason behind this strong bond is that both countries have always stood by each other in difficult times.
China has consistently taken positive steps to improve Pakistan’s economic and financial conditions, he observed.
Special Assistant emphasized the need to accelerate work on CPEC projects so that economic activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa can be further promoted.
He added that the provincial government’s development policies and good governance initiatives, particularly under the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, are ensuring better public facilities, employment opportunities, and the provision of modern education.
He expressed confidence that only through education and skill development of the youth can Khyber Pakhtunkhwa be placed on the path of sustainable progress.
Appreciating the performance of China Window, Shafi Jan said that the institution has rendered valuable services in promoting Pak-China friendship and strengthening cultural ties.
He noted that the center is not only introducing China’s culture, history, and modern development but is also playing a highly significant role in fostering Pak-China relations.
Congratulating the students who completed digital media course, he said that in the present era the importance of digital media has increased manifold.
This achievement reflects the hard work and skills of the youth and is also a matter of pride for the government to provide young people with opportunities to advance in the fields of modern technology, media, and information. He added that digital media skills can help the youth build their identity not only at the national but also at the international level.
Earlier, the Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Information, Shafi Jan, distributed certificates among students on behalf of the National Commission for Vocational and Technical Training (NAVTTC).

SMEDA introduces free registration portal for SMEs

LAHORE, Dec 22 (APP): The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has introduced the SME Registration Portal (SMERP) as a key initiative, aimed at strengthening transparency and enhancing convenience for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
SMERP facilitates online registration of SMEs and issuance of SMEDA SME Size Certificates through a fully digital process with minimal human interaction, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and ease of access for businesses across the country.
The portal has been designed to develop a comprehensive and reliable SME database, which will support research, evidence-based policy formulation, and effective alignment of government interventions with the needs of SMEs, the SMEDA spokesman disclosed this to media here Monday.
To further strengthen transparency and information verification, SMEDA has integrated Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) into the portal.
Registration on SMERP and application for the SMEDA SME Size Certificate are voluntary, with no mandatory requirement for SMEs. However, eligible manufacturing SMEs with annual turnover of up to Rs 250 million can benefit from a tax rate reduction under the 14th Schedule of the Finance Bill 2021 upon obtaining the SME Size Certificate through SMERP.
Recently, the SMEDA has also introduced grants under the SME Certification, International Accreditation, and Quality Improvement Program, which can be applied for online through SMERP for enhanced transparency and convenience for SMEs.

CM for cooperation between KP govt, Pakistan Railways

PESHAWAR, Dec 22 (APP): An important meeting on railway development was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Sohail Afridi, during which it was agreed to strengthen cooperation between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and Pakistan Railways.
The meeting decided to construct a new 192-kilometer railway track from Kohat to Kharlachi at an estimated cost of USD 642 million, with a proposed completion period of two years.
The Chief Minister termed the project an urgent requirement, stating that the Kohat–Kharlachi train service would significantly improve travel facilities and boost commercial activities in the region.
Participants also discussed plans to operate modern trains on various railway tracks across the province, while directives were issued to initiate train services in other major cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials were instructed to prepare comprehensive plans with clear timelines for all railway-related projects.
The meeting further considered launching a safari train service on the 32-kilometer Jamrud to Landi Kotal railway track.
Discussions were also held on the restoration, cleanliness, and renovation of historic railway stations, along with the development of green belts along railway tracks.
Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to extending full cooperation to Pakistan Railways in the larger public interest.
The meeting was attended by Advisor to Finance Muzammil Aslam, the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Secretary of Pakistan Railways, and other concerned officials.

IG Rizvi hosts Christmas celebration for christian police officers in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22 (APP): Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi hosted a Christmas ceremony for police officers and staff belonging to the Christian community at the Police Lines Headquarters.
An ICT Police spokesperson told APP on Monday that senior police officials, including DIG Headquarters, AIG Logistics and other senior officers, attended the ceremony to express solidarity and goodwill with Christian officers and staff serving in the force.

PM Shehbaz announces Rs 10 mln cash award for each victorious U-19 Asia Cup player

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced Rs 10 million cash award for each player of the Pakistan Under-19 cricket team following their triumphant victory in the Asia Cup.
The prime minister who hosted a special luncheon in honour of the winning team said the team’s outstanding performance “won the hearts of 240 million Pakistanis and boosted the nation’s pride”.
PM Sharif congratulated the entire squad, coaching staff and team management and also announced Rs 2.5 million for each member of the management staff to recognize their efforts.
“The way you trained, played and handled pressure shows maturity beyond your age. You have brought great honour to Pakistan and proved that our future in cricket is bright,” the prime minister remarked.
He lauded the young players for their discipline, resilience and historic victory over India in the final, and added that the emphatic win against India carried special significance and symbolised Pakistan’s growing strength in youth cricket.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif specially praised the outstanding performers, including Samir Manaz for his superb batting display of 172 runs, Under-19 captain Farhan Yousuf Khan for his leadership, Ali Raza for his impactful wicket-taking spells, and Abdul Subhan for claiming 13 wickets during the tournament. He also acknowledged the contributions of all bowlers, batters, wicketkeepers, trainers and support staff.
He prayed for the team’s continued success and urged them to remain focused over the next few years to earn places in the national side.
Earlier, Interior Minister and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the team’s composure and professionalism, particularly in the final. Referring to provocations during the match, he said the players showed remarkable patience and maturity by focusing solely on the game.
“We kept cricket and politics separate. Our boys did not react and stayed committed to fair but fearless cricket. Allah rewarded their discipline with victory,” he said.
Mohsin Naqvi also announced that work had begun on establishing a most modern High Performance Centre in Lahore, saying the existing facility had become outdated. He said the new centre would provide modern training resources and significantly benefit emerging cricketers. “In a few months, we will inaugurate a world-class facility that will help these players prepare for international challenges,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Under-19 captain Farhan Yousuf Khan thanked the prime minister and the Pakistan Cricket Board for their encouragement and support. He said well-structured training camps and strong backing from the management played a crucial role in the team’s success. “Even after a loss, the management stood by us and boosted our confidence. We will carry this momentum into the upcoming tri-series and the World Cup,” he said.
Several players also shared their experiences, crediting the coaching staff for focused training over the past four to six months. They said technical work on bowling actions, length and consistency, along with mental conditioning, helped them perform under pressure. One bowler noted that belief in the process, hard work and clear game plans were key to his success in the tournament.
The players expressed gratitude to the PCB, coaches and support staff for organising effective camps and creating a positive team environment. They said the warm reception and recognition at the highest level had further motivated them to work harder and aim for greater success in future international events.

CM reviews Rs1,018 bln development strategy, investment plans for current fiscal year

KARACHI, Dec 22 (APP): The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, on Monday presided over a high-level joint meeting of the Planning & Development and Finance departments to review the provincial development strategy and investment plans for the current fiscal year.
   The meeting, held at CM House, outlined a comprehensive vision for a resilient and inclusive Sindh, backed by a total development outlay of Rs 1,018 billion. The meeting was attended by Minister P&D Jam Khan Shoro, Minister Works Haji Ali Hassan Zardari, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Chairman P&D Najam Shah, Secretary to CM Raheem Shaikh, Secretary Finance Fayaz Jatoi and Secretary Works Nawaz Sohoo and others.
   Sharing his vision, the chief minister said that the ‘Development Strategy 2025-26’ focuses on creating climate-resilient infrastructure for buildings, roads and housing.
   He directed the Planning & Development Department to prioritise schemes that enhance climate resilience and ensure that all new projects are designed to withstand extreme weather events. He further instructed the departments concerned to integrate disaster-risk considerations into project planning and approvals.
    “The main thrust of our development strategy is climate-resilient infrastructure, rapid flood recovery, and inclusive growth. I want every rupee of development spending to contribute to reducing poverty and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
    The CM said flood recovery would include rehabilitating damaged education and health facilities, while improved connectivity would link major cities and support mass transit systems in urban centres. He emphasised that poverty reduction and inclusive development must remain cross-cutting priorities across all departments.
   Murad Shah said his government has earmarked significant funds across key sectors under the Rs 520 billion Provincial Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2025-26.
    The meeting was informed that a massive Rs 582 billion plan has been prepared for road infrastructure, including the construction and rehabilitation of 970 km of roads under flood recovery and other major projects such as the Sindh Coastal Highway.
   Karachi-specific road projects account for Rs 194 billion, including the Shahrah-e-Bhutto corridor, Malir River bridge and various underpasses and flyovers aimed at easing congestion.
   The CM directed the Works & Services Department to fast-track the execution of Karachi’s critical road projects and ensure strict adherence to quality standards and timelines. He warned that delays and substandard work would not be tolerated.
   Chairman P&D Najam Shah briefed the CM that a monitoring mechanism was being strengthened to track physical and financial progress on all major road schemes, particularly those in Karachi and flood-affected districts.
    A Rs 340 billion investment plan has been approved to reconstruct 1,600 secondary schools damaged during the floods and to establish nine new cadet colleges and a Women’s University in Sukkur.
The CM directed the School Education & Literacy Department to ensure that reconstruction work in flood-hit areas is completed on a priority basis so that children do not remain out of school. He also instructed them to ensure that girls’ education receives special focus in the new schemes.
The CM was informed that tenders for a large number of school reconstruction projects had been floated and that work on priority districts would begin shortly. They assured him that the Women’s University Sukkur project was being fast-tracked.
   With an allocation of Rs 300 billion, the province will expand nine DHQ hospitals and establish medical colleges in Karachi, Hyderabad and other major cities. Notably, Rs 146.9 billion has been earmarked as grants-in-aid for institutions such as SIUT, NICVD and Indus Hospital to ensure operational efficiency.
   The CM directed the Health Department and the Finance Department to ensure the timely release of funds so that these institutions can continue to provide free and quality healthcare to people across Sindh.
   Secretary Finance Fayaz Jatoi informed the CM that, on his instructions, grants-in-aid were being disbursed on priority and that a schedule had been drawn up to avoid any disruption in services.
A combined investment of over Rs 930 billion is planned for the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) sector, including the K-IV Water Supply Project (Rs 126.9 billion) and the Hub Canal project for Karachi.
   The CM directed that all WASH schemes must be closely monitored, especially those related to drinking water supply in rural and urban areas. He asked for monthly progress reports on K-IV and Hub Canal improvements.
The CM was told that coordination with the federal government and international partners on K-IV had improved, and key milestones were being achieved as per plan.
The strategy also includes a Rs 69.97 billion energy package featuring the Sindh Solar Energy Project, and a Rs 155.34 billion transport plan covering the Red, Yellow and Orange Line BRTs. He said that he had personally visited the under-construction Red Line project last week, and work has sped up.
  The CM directed the Energy Department to speed up solarisation initiatives in public buildings and off-grid areas, especially in health and education facilities. He also instructed the Transport Department to remove bottlenecks in land acquisition and approvals for BRT corridors.
  The CM was told that the department was in close coordination with development partners to expedite procurement and implementation for these projects.
The ‘Sindh People’s Housing for Flood Affectees’ (SPHF) project remains a cornerstone of the provincial agenda. It aims to restore 2.1 million houses affected by the 2022 floods. To date, 2 million validations have been completed, and approximately 1.4 million disbursements have been made.
The project is estimated to create 1 million jobs and has already enabled the distribution of land titles to around 300,000 women.
The CM directed the SPHF team to further simplify procedures for beneficiaries and ensure that no deserving household is left out due to documentation issues. He stressed that the issuance of land titles to women must continue as a priority to empower them economically.
The CM was told that grievance redressal mechanisms had been strengthened, and mobile teams were visiting remote areas to facilitate beneficiaries.
The chief minister was also briefed on the province’s success in carbon financing, specifically the ‘Delta Blue Carbon’ project in the Indus Delta, which is expected to generate an average of $15–20 million per annum.
   He directed the Forest and Environment departments to expand such initiatives and ensure transparent utilisation of carbon revenues for coastal protection and community development. Furthermore, international development partners are extending substantial support through a Foreign Project Assistance (FPA) portfolio of Rs 1,557.65 billion, with the World Bank contributing Rs 999.64 billion and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) providing Rs 306.33 billion.
The CM directed the P&D and Finance departments to improve project preparation and execution so that the FPA portfolio is fully and efficiently utilised within agreed timelines.
The meeting also reviewed Sindh’s robust PPP portfolio, which includes completed projects worth Rs 148 billion and ongoing projects worth Rs 130 billion, such as the Ghotki – Kandhkot Bridge and the Dhabeji Industrial Zone.
The CM directed the PPP Unit to accelerate work on ongoing schemes and identify new viable projects, particularly in industrial infrastructure, health and education. The CM was informed that transaction advisers had been engaged for several new ventures and that investor interest in Sindh’s PPP model remained strong.
Concluding the meeting, Murad Ali Shah reiterated that every department must work in close coordination to translate the Rs 1,018 billion development strategy into visible improvements in people’s lives, especially in flood-affected and underdeveloped areas.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22 (APP): Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police continued their focus on professional capacity-building as multiple expert-led sessions were held during an ongoing advanced training course at the Capital Police College, Islamabad.
An official told APP on Monday that officers attending the course were given a detailed lecture by Professor Dr Aziz ur Rehman from Quaid-e-Azam University on human rights, women’s rights and child protection. He highlighted the constitutional and legal responsibilities of police officers, stressing the need to safeguard vulnerable segments of society with sensitivity and professionalism.

1200 litres adulterated milk discarded, two held

MUZAFFARGARH, Dec 22 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) continued its action against the adulteration mafia as 1,200 litres of substandard milk was discarded during an operation in Ali Pur tehsil on Monday.
According to the PFA spokesperson, the dairy safety team, led by the Director Operations Food Authority South Punjab, set up a checkpoint at Head Panjnad. A milk-carrying vehicle was stopped during the blockade, and samples taken from the milk failed quality tests. Officials found low fat content and a lack of natural nutrients, rendering the milk unfit for human consumption.
Director General Food Authority South Punjab said, in a statement ,that the entire 1,200 litres of adulterated milk was destroyed on the spot. Cases were registered against the suppliers, and two accused were arrested.
He stated that checkpoints were being established to ensure the supply of adulteration-free milk to the public.
He also informed citizens that milk used in households can be tested free of cost at any Punjab Food Authority office.

FIA holds refresher training programme

LAHORE, Dec 22 (APP): The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Lahore organised a refresher training programme aimed at further enhancing transparency in legal and investigative processes.
According to an FIA spokesperson, the training course was conducted for officers of the Commercial Banking Circle of FIA Lahore Zone. The objective of the programme was to apprise officers of shortcomings observed in case files, challans and legal proceedings, and to provide guidance for addressing these issues effectively.
The training session, featured expert officers who gave detailed briefings to participants on modern investigative requirements and relevant legal matters, besides offering practical guidance.
On special instructions of senior officials, the refresher course was conducted with keen interest to enable officers to further improve their performance through collective insight and practical experience.
During the training, officers’ questions were answered and guidance was provided to resolve their practical problems, the spokesperson added.

Motorcyclist killed, two injured on road

MUZAFFARGARH, Dec 22 (APP): A motorcyclist was killed while two others of the same family sustained serious injuries in a collision between a motorcycle and a passenger bus at Juggi Adda near Fatehpur.
According to Rescue 1122 sources, Shehroz of Chak 75/TDA with his brother Shabeel and
cousin Asad Ali were returning home from market on a motorcycle when a speeding bus collided with the motorcycle at Adda Juggi near Fatehpur.
Resultantly, Shehroz died on the spot while the other two sustained serious injuries.
Rescue officials shifted the body and injured to a nearby hospital, however, the police concerned started investigations.
