Ex-Servicemen endorse defence reforms, new constitutional court

RAWALPINDI, Nov 16 (APP): The Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PES) has welcomed recent defence reforms under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, describing them as a key step towards modernising the country’s defence structure, along with the creation of a Federal Constitutional Court.

The 64th meeting of the Society was held here on Sunday, with Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Qayyum in the chair. It was attended by PES Senior Vice President Admiral (Retired) Abdul Aleem, Secretary General Commodore Arshad Khan, Chief Organiser Aziz Ahmed Awan, and retired officers and personnel from the armed forces, second-line forces, and defence departments nationwide.

The participants said reforms in the higher defence organisation were “extremely necessary” to make national defence effective in line with modern, digitalised warfare requirements. They welcomed the creation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) post as a crucial step for central strategic guidance, enhanced joint operational coordination, and improved synergy among the three armed forces.

The meeting also backed the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court, saying a separate court would allow the Supreme Court to focus on constitutional matters while reducing delays in ordinary cases.

The PES emphasised that constitutional amendments “fall within the Parliament’s prerogative, but their spirit, particularly the separation of powers, must be preserved.”

On foreign policy, the meeting stressed that a peaceful resolution of issues with Afghanistan was in Pakistan’s national interest and required effective diplomacy and involvement of regional friendly states. It also urged that alleged Indian support for terrorism in Pakistan be raised globally with solid evidence and action at the United Nations and Financial Action Task Force.

Regarding retired personnel welfare, the Society said “as military personnel retire young, a permanent quota should be allocated for them in government departments on merit.” It added that pensions for retired armed forces personnel, sailors, air force members, and widows of martyrs should not fall below the country’s minimum wage.

The PES welcomed the government’s decision to establish a separate pension fund, contributed to by both the state and employees, to be made self-sufficient through investments. It also expressed concern over delays in compensating former personnel affected by recent floods, urging provincial governments to expedite payments immediately.

CHINIOT, Nov 16 (APP): The Environmental Protection Department carried out a decisive operation on Sunday, tearing down illegal brick-kiln structures in Chiniot. Acting under the direction of Deputy Director Dr. Hina, enforcement teams used heavy machinery to demolish the premises of Al Makkah Bricks on Lali Road in Tehsil Lalian, as well as Kundan Bricks and Ahmed Shah Bricks in Chenab Nagar. The kilns were found operating without the mandated zigzag emission-control technology, which is required to curb smog and particulate pollution.
Dr. Hina explained that the demolition follows strict enforcement of provincial environmental statutes aimed at protecting air quality. “We are implementing the law without exception,” she said, adding that no kiln will be permitted to function without the approved zigzag system. The operation underscores the department’s commitment to reducing industrial contributions to the region’s chronic smog problem.
Witnesses reported a convoy of excavators and bulldozers moving through the sites, dismantling brick-making structures and loading debris onto trucks for disposal. The swift action was coordinated with local police to ensure safety and order during the demolition process.
The Environmental Protection Department reiterated that similar inspections will continue across the province until all brick kilns comply with the zigzag technology requirement. Officials urged kiln owners to adopt the mandated equipment promptly to avoid further legal action and contribute to cleaner air for the community.

NAB recovers  R 8,397 billion in operation against corruption mafia

LAHORE, Nov 16 (APP): The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has set a new benchmark in its fight against corruption, financial fraud, and land grabbing, reporting a record recovery of Rs 8.4 trillion over the past two and a half years. This figure, achieved between March 2023 and October 2025, represents the highest recovery in the institution’s history.
According to NAB sources, prior to this period, the total recovery from its establishment in 1999 to February 2023 stood at Rs 883 billion. However, the recent surge in recoveries has been ten times higher, a success attributed to the bureau’s revamped strategies and rigorous enforcement actions.
A significant portion of this recovery comes from large-scale operations led by NAB’s Land Directorate, which managed to reclaim vast tracts of government land from encroachment mafias. The value of the land recovered is said to be in the trillions of rupees, contributing substantially to the overall recovery figures.
With the current momentum, NAB officials predict that another Rs 2,000 billion could be recovered by the end of 2025, further boosting the agency’s success in tackling corruption and illegal land encroachments. Operations against corrupt practices and illegal land allotments are expected to continue next month as part of NAB’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public resources.
