ISLAMABAD, Nov 16 (APP): The Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan), in collaboration with a wide network of leading public and private sector institutions, will host the 2nd Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 on December 3.
The national summit is expected to attract more than 300 experts and stakeholders along with over 10,000 visitors to its sustainability expo, focusing on the theme “Sustainable Housing for Economic Resilience & Climate-Smart Living.”
Speaking to a group of media professionals on Sunday afternoon, well-known environmentalist and climate advocacy expert, Executive Director Devcom-Pakistan Munir Ahmed said while the construction and real estate sectors remain critical for national GDP and employment, they also account for substantial natural resource consumption and large volumes of carbon emissions.”
“This duality places Pakistan at a crossroads where economic development must be reconciled with climate resilience, environmental responsibility, and long-term energy security,” he added.
“Sustainable housing offers a transformative pathway to achie this balance. By promoting green construction, energy-efficient design, and climate-smart infrastructure, Pakistan can strengthen economic stability, reduce environmental degradation, support green job creation, and enhance quality of life. These efforts directly contribute to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Collectively, they support a more resilient, inclusive, and low-carbon development trajectory under SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth),” he noted.
The second Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 aims to serve as a high-level platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue, knowledge exchange, and strategic collaboration. It will bring together policymakers, architects, engineers, urban planners, researchers, financiers, builders, development organizations, and community voices to explore practical and scalable solutions for climate-smart and economically resilient housing, he underscored.
The parallel sustainability expo will offer partner institutions a dedicated space to demonstrate innovative technologies, eco-friendly materials, smart urban systems, renewable energy solutions, and housing models designed to reduce carbon footprints and enhance affordability. The Pakistan Sustainability Awards 2025 will honor exemplary achievers in categories such as green housing, sustainable materials, engineering innovation, architectural design, youth innovation, women’s leadership, and environmental reporting—aimed at inspiring replication and mainstreaming of best practices nationwide, he focused.
Munir Ahmed underscored the strategic importance of this year’s summit. “Pakistan can no longer afford to expand its cities on outdated, resource-intensive, and climate-insensitive models,” he said.
“Sustainable housing is central not only to reducing emissions and environmental degradation, but also to protecting vulnerable populations, lowering long-term housing and energy costs, and driving economic resilience. Aligning our housing and urban planning priorities with the relevant SDGs is essential for ensuring a livable future for our next generations. This summit aims to build a national coalition committed to accelerating this transition,” he said.
The summit’s thematic sessions will delve into policy reforms, architectural innovation, energy-smart urban infrastructure, climate finance, social inclusion, and the digital transformation of housing systems.
Experts will examine how national and provincial housing policies can be better aligned with Pakistan’s climate commitments under SDG 13, and with global sustainability frameworks linked to SDG 11 and Vision 2035. Presentations will highlight advances in sustainable design, locally adapted and low-carbon materials, renewable energy integration such as solar and wind systems, water conservation technologies, and responsible waste management practices. Participants will also explore the growing role of digital tools—including IoT, GIS, digital twins, and smart city applications—in optimizing energy use, improving transparency, and strengthening long-term housing management.
Green financing will be a central focus, with discussions on climate funds, green bonds, concessional lending, microfinance for low-income housing, and carbon credit markets to accelerate sustainable construction. Another key area will be community resilience and inclusion, emphasizing affordable housing models, gender-responsive planning, disaster resilience, and equitable access to climate-smart infrastructure—ensuring that the sustainability agenda advances SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
The event takes place at a time when Pakistan confronts a widening housing deficit exceeding 400,000 units annually, a rapidly growing urban population, and escalating climate-induced risks. Nearly 40 percent of urban residents lack access to adequate housing and essential services, highlighting the urgent need to reform how Pakistan builds, plans, and manages its cities.

CTI chief urges govt support to revive Pakistan’s carpet industry

0
LAHORE, Nov 16 (APP): Chairperson of the Carpet Training Institute (CTI), Ejaz-ur-Rehman, has raised serious concerns over the challenges facing Pakistan’s hand-knotted carpet industry and the sharp decline in exports.
He stressed that government support, strategic policy measures, and a clear long-term plan are essential to revive the sector and restore its export potential.
Addressing a meeting with manufacturers and exporters on Sunday, Ejaz-ur-Rehman discussed the long-standing issues confronting the industry and proposed measures to promote exports. He emphasized the importance of a thorough understanding of the sector’s problems, stating that effective solutions cannot be found without first diagnosing the underlying issues.
He expressed particular concern over the decline of what was once a globally recognized industry with high export volumes. He urged industry stakeholders to work together on crafting a viable roadmap for the future, taking into account the current state of the market.
The CTI chairperson noted that while the carpet industry is growing rapidly in other countries and global market prospects are improving, Pakistan’s sector is facing several critical challenges. Chief among these, he said, is the lack of government support and a shortage of skilled labor, particularly in rural areas where most of the industry’s workforce is based.
He also highlighted the need for greater industry awareness of global trends, stressing that innovation in design is crucial for maintaining competitiveness. Modern buyers, particularly millennials and Generation Z, tend to prefer carpets with simpler designs, fewer colors, and cultural elements. To compete effectively in international markets, Pakistan’s carpet industry must focus on reducing production costs and scaling up manufacturing.
He stressed that the government intervention through policy support could help align the industry’s strategies with global trends, ultimately leading to an expansion of exports. He proposed that government action in areas such as tax exemptions, freight subsidies, and trade agreements could significantly boost the sector. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a Pakistan Carpet Export Promotion Body to further support the industry’s growth and development.

Lahore’s air quality improves to 159 on AQI

0
LAHORE, Nov 16 (APP): Lahore’s air quality showed an unexpected improvement on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 159, though it still remained classified as “unhealthy” by international standards.
According to data from IQAir, the concentration of PM2.5 was found to be 13.4 times higher than the World Health Organization’s annual guideline for particulate matter.
A senior official from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attributed the improvement to several key factors, marking a significant achievement in controlling local pollution. The official explained that polluted air from neighboring India had not entered the city, thanks to winds blowing at 8 km/h from the northwest to the southeast. However, the major contributor to the drop in pollution levels was the successful implementation of the EPA’s strict action plan.
The official credited 24/7 monitoring by the EPA, along with continuous industrial inspections and search operations, for the significant reduction in pollution. Over 800 smoke-emitting vehicles were removed from the roads, and fines were substantially increased. Additionally, strict checks were conducted on brick kilns, factories, and commercial units, with many units sealed for non-compliance.
The government also maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards the open burning of crop residue and waste in public spaces. Complementing these efforts were mechanical road washing, water sprinkling, and the implementation of a robust traffic management plan, all of which played a positive role in improving the city’s environmental conditions.
Despite these efforts, the AQI remains a concern, and officials continue to work towards further reducing pollution levels to improve public health and safety.

An official told APP on Sunday that the Hotel Eye software is fully operational across police stations, enabling real-time registration of individuals staying in hotels, guest houses, and shelter homes. Through strict scrutiny of the uploaded data, 11 wanted suspects were identified and arrested, after which legal proceedings were initiated at the respective police stations.
Following the directives of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, the Safe City project is being expanded to ensure integrated monitoring across the city.
Director General Safe City Islamabad Muhammad Haroon Joya said the system is proving highly effective in tracing criminals involved in serious crimes, as it allows immediate matching and verification of individuals’ identities.
He added that all entry and exit points of the city, the Red Zone, major markets, and public places are being monitored through Safe City’s modern camera network, while special check posts and digital verification points have been established for enhanced security.
Apart from ground surveillance, drone-based aerial monitoring is also being carried out to strengthen rapid response, perimeter security, and law enforcement visibility.
DG Safe City said the use of modern tools such as the Hotel Eye system not only improves citizen safety but also equips operational teams with real-time intelligence. “The ICT Police is fully committed to adopting technology-driven policing to protect the lives and property of citizens,” he said.
He added that the Hotel Eye system is proving exceptionally valuable not only for recording the data of out-of-city visitors but also for identifying repeat offenders and wanted individuals, making it one of the most effective digital policing tools currently in operation.
