64 green tractors to be distributed among farmers: AD, Agriculture

NOWSHERA VIRKAN, Nov 17 (APP):Assistant Director , Agriculture (Extension), Nowshera Virkan on Monday said under Punjab Government’s Green Tractor Scheme, 64 tractors would be distributed among the farmers in the Tehsil.
Addressing a seminar, he said modern agricultural equipments were being provided to the farmers on subsidized rates for development of agriculture sector in the province.
The Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Gujranwala, and officials of the agriculture department attended the seminar.
He pointed out that a target of 147,000 acres had been fixed to cultivate wheat in the tehsil.

PM Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif arrives in Karachi

LAHORE, Nov 17 (APP):Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday arrived in Karachi on a one-day visit.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and senior provincial officials welcomed the Prime Minister upon his arrival.
During his visit, the Prime Minister would inaugurate modern waiting halls and lounges at New Shalimar Express and Karachi Cantonment Station.
Pakistan Television would broadcast the inauguration ceremony and the Prime Minister’s address.

Workshop on “Citrus Harvest, Postharvest Handling, and Export Readiness” held:

SARGODHA, Nov 17 (APP):The Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, University of Sargodha (UOS), in collaboration with the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) and the Citrus Research Institute (CRI), organized an insightful workshop on “Citrus Harvest, Postharvest Handling, and Export Readiness” here on Monday.
The event brought together citrus growers, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss innovative strategies for improving citrus quality, tackling pest and disease challenges, and enhancing Pakistan’s export potential through efficient logistics management.
Renowned experts / Organizers  including Prof Dr Rashad Mukhtar Balal (UOS) highlighted the need to adopt modern citrus management practices, harvesting and postharvest handling techniques to ensure fruit quality, reduce losses, and meet international market standards.
Citrus farmers from various regions actively participated in the workshop, raising field-level issues such as pest infestations, postharvest diseases, and market challenges.
The experts provided practical solutions to these problems, highlighting integrated approaches for disease control, improved fruit grading, and better packaging practices.
On this occasion, Prof Dr. Rashad Mukhtar Bilal expressed his pleasure in announcing that the Department of Horticulture, UOS, will provide true-to-type, disease-free citrus plants to farmers. He said this initiative aims to promote the cultivation of healthy, high-quality citrus varieties, ultimately strengthening the citrus industry and increasing farmers’ profitability.
He further emphasized the importance of strong linkages among academia, research institutions, and industry stakeholders to make Pakistan’s citrus sector more resilient, sustainable, and globally competitive.
The workshop concluded with Mr. Khawar from PHDEC a shared commitment to adopt improved production and postharvest practices for enhancing Pakistan’s reputation in international citrus markets.

Twelve days Measles & Rubella campaign kicks off to vaccinate 6.4 m children in KP

PESHAWAR, Nov 17 (APP):The twelve-day campaign (Nov 17 to 29) for vaccination of 6.4 million children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against Measles and Rubella diseases has been kicked off here on Monday.
Provincial Minister for Health, Khaleeq-ur-Rehman, was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony held here at a Girls’ High School on Warsak Road.
Advisor to Chief Minister on Information, Shafi Jan, Chief Secretary KP, Shahab Ali Shah, Secretary Health, Shahid Ullah, Director EPI, Dr. Muhammad Asghar, Team Lead Unicef KP, Dr. Inam, and other officials were present at the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Provincial Minister for Health said the special campaign for administering Measles and Rubella has been launched at the national level to cover around 36 million children aged six to 59 months across the country.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he continued, 6.4 million children will be administered a preventive vaccine against these diseases affecting the health of children.
A total of 6500 vaccinating teams are taking part in this twelve-day immunization campaign, he added.
In 2024, Khaleeq-ur-Rehman added that around 13000 cases of measles were reported in the province with around 25 deaths.
Similarly, at the country level, around 131,000 measles cases have been reported during the last three years.
Pakistan ranks among the top five countries in the world with the highest burden of these most contagious diseases.
He said coverage of 6.4 million children could not be reached without the cooperation of people from all segments of society.
He also urged the media to play an effective role in spreading awareness about the importance of vaccination in the prevention of measles and rubella diseases among children.
Chief Secretary KP, Shahad Ali Shah in his speech said that health is on top of the list in the reform policy of KP government.
He said several initiatives have been taken to bring improvement in the health sector, and for this purpose, special focus has been placed on upgrading medical care at district-level hospitals.
The KP government has also passed an Immunization Policy for increasing the vaccination coverage in the province upto 75 percent.
He said the provincial government is spending around Rs. 275 billion on an annual basis on the health sector with the objective of providing better medical care to people and on prevention of illnesses.
In KP, he continued, there are 450 primary health units and work is in programme to ensure round-the-clock mother and new born care in these units round the clock.
Similarly, the government is also struggling to ensure the availability of medicine at all the District Health Offices along with doctors.
He also disclosed that a new teaching hospital will be built in Peshawar to lower the burden on other big hospitals of the province.
In response to a question about refusal by parents during the measles and rubella vaccination campaign, the Chief Secretary said committees have been constituted for response to refusals. These committees, he continued, will visit to meet and convince the refusing parents.
Monitoring of vaccination will also be conducted on a daily basis in the offices of the Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioners, and EPI officials to ensure maximum coverage.
During the campaign, apart from administering of MR vaccine to 6,423,877 children, around 5,246,820 children will also be given OPV (Oral polio vaccine) drops in 27 districts.
The ceremony was also addressed by Advisor to Chief Minister KP on Information, Shafi Jan, who also highlighted different measures taken by the government for improving the healthcare system in the province.

Organized by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment Department, Merged Districts, in partnership with UNICEF, the event spotlighted the leadership, creativity, and advocacy potential of adolescent girls.
The celebration featured an array of interactive and awareness-building activities tailored to adolescent participants.
Highlights included a theatre performance titled “My Day, My Rights” conceptualized and performed entirely by adolescent girls, along with a student-led panel discussion on child protection challenges and a debate competition encouraging youth to voice their views with confidence.
In her opening remarks, UNICEF Child Protection Officer Sumbal Gillani praised the Directorate for hosting an event dedicated to adolescent girls, noting their pivotal role as advocates for younger children.
She emphasized the transformative impact of equipping girls with knowledge, confidence, and leadership opportunities, stressing that informed adolescent girls often become influential peer educators within their communities.
Sumbal Gillani reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting platforms that amplify girls’ voices and promote peer-led initiatives aimed at ending violence, exploitation, and harmful practices.
Director of the Social Welfare Department, Merged Districts, Obaid ur Rahman, expressed gratitude to the school administration for their support and acknowledged UNICEF’s strong partnership in advancing child protection initiatives across the province.
The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony honoring students who participated in the theatre, panel discussion, and debate activities. Shields were also presented to organizers and school officials for their contributions to the event’s success.
Participants reaffirmed a shared commitment to safeguarding children and adolescents from violence, exploitation, and abuse, underscoring that collective action and community engagement remain key to building safer, more supportive environments for all children.
Universal Children’s Day, observed annually on November 20, serves as a global reminder of the importance of children’s rights and well-being.
Established by the United Nations in 1954, the day commemorates two landmark human rights milestones, the Declaration of the Rights of the Child 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989.
This year’s theme, “My Day, My Rights,” underscores the need to ensure that children everywhere are heard, respected, and involved in shaping decisions that affect their lives.

Vaccination campaign against measles, rubella starts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR, Nov 17 (APP):The measles and rubella vaccination campaign began in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday. Special Assistant for Information Shafi Jan inaugurated the campaign.
Speaking on the occasion, he said a target has been set to vaccinate 6 million children against measles and rubella during the 12-day campaign.
He said health and education are the top priorities of the provincial government.
“We are going to impose an emergency in the health and education sectors,” said Shafi Jan.
Special attention is being made to health and education to improve the lives of the public.
He said teachers, parents and religious scholars have a key role in the success of the vaccination campaign.
“We were elected by the people’s vote and fully understand the problems of ordinary citizens,” said Shafi Jan.

Clinic sealed in anti-quackery drive

GUJRAT, Nov 17 (APP):An anti-quackery team led by Deputy District Health Officer (DDHO) Dr. Waheed Kamran sealed a clinic and issued warnings to others during inspections carried out on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Gujrat Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi.
The team inspected clinics in Union Councils Saboor, Choor Chak, Banyan, and Bazurgwal. At Ayan Clinic in Bazurgwal, a dispenser was found practicing illegal allopathic treatment.
A large quantity of used syringes, injections, and steroids was recovered, and the clinic was sealed on the spot. The case has been referred to the Punjab Healthcare Commission in Lahore. At Raza Clinic, the doctor was present and directed to immediately complete PHC registration. Shakeel Homeo Clinic in Banyan was issued a warning for minor violations.
The anti-quackery campaign will continue across the district under a zero-tolerance policy to ensure safe and quality healthcare for the public.

PPP to celebrate Foundation Day at district level on November 30

DC launches 12-day measles, rubella vaccination campaign

SIALKOT, Nov 17 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Sialkot, Saba Asghar Ali, inaugurated a 12-day measles and rubella vaccination campaign at the Basic Health Unit (BHU) Muradpur, Sialkot.
According to the DC office spokesperson, the district aims to vaccinate 599,193 children aged six months to five years.
A total of 136 fixed centers and 358 outreach teams have been deployed to ensure maximum coverage, with teams visiting households to administer vaccines.
DC Saba Asghar Ali urged parents to cooperate with vaccination teams to protect children from measles and rubella.
District Health Officer Dr. Ahmed Nasir, Dr. Shehzad Iqbal, Dr. Waleed Iqbal, Dr. Sidra Gilani, and representatives from UNICEF and WHO attended the ceremony.
