CDA reclaims 42 kanals in anti-encroachment drive around Diplomatic Enclave

0
ISLAMABAD, Nov 15 (APP): Capital Development Authority (CDA) has recovered 42 kanals of state land during an ongoing crackdown on illegal constructions and encroachments around the Diplomatic Enclave.
The operation, ordered by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa, was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Director General (Enforcement) Dr Anum Fatima, its spokesperson told APP on Saturday.
He said, the latest phase targeted areas in and around the Diplomatic Enclave where land had been occupied by local encroachment groups.
All legal formalities were completed and prior notices issued before action was taken.
The CDA Enforcement Directorate, supported by district administration and Islamabad Police, used heavy machinery to remove illegal structures.
Modern satellite imagery provided by SUPARCO was also used to identify encroachments in real time.
Meanwhile, the CDA chairman said the agency would maintain a strict policy of zero tolerance towards illegal occupation and ordered long-term measures to secure the retrieved land against future encroachment.
He added that sustained action was essential for Islamabad’s urban planning, safety and overall aesthetics.
The authority has urged residents to cooperate with the anti-encroachment campaign and report any illegal occupation to the relevant departments.

Kaspersky urges stronger online safety

0
ISLAMABAD, Nov 15 (APP): Kaspersky has urged people in Pakistan to stay alert online and follow basic cyber-hygiene practices to protect themselves.
After participating in the CTI Summit 2025 in Islamabad, the global cybersecurity company released new data on the country’s cyberthreat landscape and shared practical safety advice.
Kaspersky’s Global Security Expert, Dmitry Berezin, said Pakistan continues to face serious cyber risks, including exploits, ransomware, and advanced targeted attacks. He told reporters that organisations must understand how fast cyberthreats are growing and becoming more sophisticated.
Kaspersky recorded more than 5.3 million on-device attacks in Pakistan between January and September 2025.
About 27 percent of users and 24 percent of corporate networks were exposed to malware spread through infected USBs, CDs, DVDs, and hidden installers.
These included ransomware, worms, trojans, backdoors, spyware, and password-stealing tools.
During the same period, Kaspersky blocked over 2.5 million web-based attacks. Around 16 percent of users and 13 percent of companies faced threats such as phishing, botnets, exploits, Remote Desktop Protocol attacks, and fake Wi-Fi networks.
A closer breakdown showed more than 354,000 exploitation attempts were stopped, along with 166,000 cases of banking malware, 126,000 spyware attacks, 113,000 backdoors, and 107,000 password stealers. Ransomware, which usually targets specific high-value victims rather than the public at large, was detected 42,000 times.
The most exploited vulnerabilities included two recently discovered issues in 2025 in 7-Zip, along with older flaws in Microsoft Office, HTML, WinRAR, VLC Player, and Notepad++. Kaspersky said this highlights the importance of timely software updates for both individuals and organisations.
Ransomware remains one of the biggest causes of corporate cyber incidents in Pakistan and globally.
Attackers often focus on government departments and large enterprises. Kaspersky said that strong defence requires a mix of preventive and response steps, including regular patching, strong authentication, limited remote access, and the use of Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and Extended Detection and Response (XDR) tools. Regular data backups and continuous staff training are also essential to reduce phishing-related risks.
Kaspersky also revealed that Pakistan is currently targeted by seven Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups. These groups—both old and newly emerging—focus on telecom and financial sectors, critical infrastructure, and government organisations, and are expanding into commercial industries as well.
APT groups frequently change their methods. Kaspersky monitored a recent campaign by an APT group known as “Mysterious Elephant,” which targets organisations across the Asia-Pacific region.
The group aims to steal sensitive files, images, documents, and even WhatsApp data. In 2025, the attackers used exploit kits, personalised spear-phishing emails, and malicious documents to break into specific networks. Once inside, they used various tools to increase their access, move within the system, and steal confidential data.
Berezin said some threats are widespread, while others are highly targeted.
He noted that zero-day vulnerabilities are often used in attacks linked to ransomware and APT groups. Understanding which threats are active in the region, he added, helps organisations adjust their security controls in advance.
Kaspersky advised individuals to learn basic cyber-safety principles, use trusted security tools like Kaspersky Premium, install updates regularly, and back up important data.
For organisations, it recommended assessing their IT systems, using strong protection tools from endpoint to XDR, accessing threat intelligence, updating cybersecurity policies, and training employees through platforms such as Kaspersky Security Awareness.

IDF urges employers to create supportive, inclusive environments for workers with diabetes

0
ISLAMABAD, Nov 15 (APP): More than 2 in 3 employees living with diabetes in Pakistan reported negative treatment in the workplace because of their condition, according to a new study conducted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
To mark World Diabetes Day, the Federation is highlighting the stigma, discrimination and lack of structural support that people living with diabetes continue to face at work.
The survey found that well over half [58 percent] of employees living with diabetes have considered leaving their job due to the way people with the condition are treated at work.
Erum Ghafoor, President, National Association of Diabetes Educators of Pakistan, Vice President, International Diabetes Federation, described the findings as “deeply concerning” and a wake-up call for employers around the world. “It is indefensible that people living with diabetes are facing stigma, isolation and discrimination in the workplace,” she said.
Nearly three-quarters [72 percent] of employees diagnosed with type 1 diabetes reported negative treatment in the workplace, compared with over two-fifths [41 percent] of workers living with type 2 diabetes. More than half [52 percent] of all respondents reported having been denied breaks or time off to attend to their diabetes management.
In addition to its emotional and professional impact, the findings show that diabetes-related stigma can also limit career opportunities.
More than a third [37 percent] said they had missed out on career development or training opportunities because of their condition.
These barriers are compounded by a culture of silence. While only one in 20 of employees living with diabetes had not disclosed their condition to their employer, 50 percent of those said they feared being treated differently. Nearly a third [30 percent] of these respondents were concerned that disclosure could limit their career progression.
Many employees living with diabetes continue to rely on peer-level support. Almost half [46 percent] have confided in just one trusted colleague, while significantly less [26 percent] have shared their diagnosis with just a few people at work.
These figures highlight the discomfort in addressing diabetes through formal workplace channels and underline the need for organisations to create more supportive and inclusive environments.
The study also found that daily diabetes management is a source of anxiety for many employees. More than a fifth of respondents [22 percent] were not comfortable administering insulin at work, while 16 percent felt the same about checking blood glucose levels. Without adequate support, these routine medical needs can become daily challenges in the workplace, imposing unnecessary stress on employees with diabetes.
“Work life and diabetes are tricky things to deal with,” says Ms Anum Anwar, a diabetes educator and advocate living with type 1 diabetes. “We need short breaks, need to follow mealtimes, monitor ourselves and carry extra things like insulin, glucometers and other things to help manage our glucose levels. Sometimes you have to go that extra mile to prove that you are like everyone else and can do as others are doing, if not better.”
The global study revealed significant regional variation. Pakistan registered the highest reported rates of negative treatment, followed by India [55 percent] and the United States [42 percent], with other countries showing varying degrees of stigma.
Ms Ghafoor added: “No one should have to hide their condition out of fear of being treated differently or denied opportunities. Living with diabetes requires ongoing management, and workplaces must recognize the physical and mental toll it can take. Simple changes, like flexible schedules and private spaces to check glucose levels or administer insulin or other medications, can make a world of difference.
“We want employers everywhere to look closely at how they support people living with diabetes. Employees with diabetes deserve respect, understanding and equal opportunities.”
As part of its World Diabetes Day campaign on the importance of well-being at work, the International Diabetes Federation is urging employers to foster supportive environments where health conversations are safe and to implement clear policies that address the needs of employees with diabetes. Strengthening diabetes awareness among all staff and offering flexible arrangements that facilitate diabetes management at work will help ensure that people living with the condition do not feel stigmatized. Workplaces that offer these provisions are better positioned to support all employees, regardless of their health needs.

Shah Medical Center re-sealed over infant’s death, illegal operations and violations

0
KARACHI, Nov 15 (APP): The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) has re-sealed Shah Medical Center established in North Nazimabad, for serious violations, illegal operation of the hospital and continuous non-compliance with SHCC’s orders.
This action was carried out after the SHCC received a complaint from the parents of a newborn baby girl, who died due to gross negligence at the hospital, a communique said.
An expert panel of SHCC, comprising independent specialists, conducted an inquiry, after hearing both the hospital administration and the complainant, the panel issued orders to the hospital to stop inpatient services. But, the hospital did not implement the orders and continue their operation without following the criteria set by SHCC.
Two days ago, the owner and staff of the hospital harassed SHCC officials including police personnel. They misbehaved, and obstructed official proceedings.
On this occasion, the hospital was partially sealed, and clear instructions were issued that admitted patients should be transferred within 24 hours and no new indoor patients should be admitted.
The hospital administration illegally reopened the hospital by breaking the seals and admitting critical patients in the Intensive Care Units (NICU, ICU), and that too without consulting any qualified consultant, which is tantamount to putting the lives of the patients at serious risk.
The SHCC officials, with the support of the district administration and police, implemented the orders despite resistance and completely sealed the hospital.
All the patients admitted in the hospital were provided proper assistance and were safely shifted to other hospitals.
The Sindh Healthcare Commission reiterates that patient safety is its top priority and all healthcare institutions in the province must adhere to the prescribed standards and rules.
The SHCC expects that the relevant administration and law enforcement agencies will play their full role in ensuring the sustainability of the hospital seal, so that the rule of law and official writ can be effectively upheld, and the innocent public should not be deceived under the pretext of treatment.
