Tanveer represents Pakistan at Council of Members of International Olive Council

0

ISLAMABAD, Nov 19 (APP): Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has participated in and addressed the 122nd session of the Council of Members of the International Olive Council (IOC) held in Córdoba, Spain.

The session gathered ministers, global experts and industry leaders from across the olive-producing world, said a press release issued by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research on Wednesday.

The minister highlighted that the government was fully committed to the development of a sustainable and competitive olive value chain across the country, adding that national priority was driven by two strategic goals: reducing Pakistan’s dependence on imported edible oils and empowering rural communities by creating new livelihood opportunities in olive cultivation, processing and value addition.

Pakistan, he noted, is endowed with millions of wild olive trees and nearly one million acres of marginal or low-productive land ideally suited for olive plantations. Over the past decade, around 50,000 acres have been successfully brought under olive cultivation, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural diversification efforts.

Tanveer underscored that the National Olive Program is not merely an agricultural project but a multi-dimensional development initiative with far-reaching impacts, adding that it contributes effectively to climate change mitigation, combats land degradation and desertification and strengthens rural economies through increased agricultural productivity.

To support this ambitious vision, Pakistan has developed a comprehensive infrastructure that includes 51 olive oil extraction units, 6 fruit processing facilities, 5 weather stations, 14 nurseries, and 4 olive oil quality laboratories equipped with sensory evaluation capabilities, he added.

Thousands of women and youth have been trained across the entire olive value chain, and over 90 olive-based startups have emerged, generating meaningful employment and fostering rural entrepreneurship, he remarked.

The Minister shared Pakistan’s recent international achievement with pride, announcing that the country’s startup brand “LO – Loralai Olives” won a Silver Award at the prestigious New York Olive Oil Quality Competition. This recognition, he noted, is a testament to the quality, potential, and rising global profile of Pakistan’s olive sector.

The government has formulated the Olive Value Chain Policy 2030, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at ensuring sustainable development, regulatory strength and innovation within the olive industry, while aligning Pakistan’s efforts with global best practices, he added.

The minister said that Pakistan is eager to become a full member of the 2015 International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives. Significant progress has been made toward accession and Pakistan looks forward to joining the International Olive Council as an active, contributing member.

He expressed confidence that cooperation with the IOC, especially in areas of technical support, technology transfer, and
human resource development, will further enhance Pakistan’s progress and productivity in the olive sector.

New buses are being introduced as pilot projects on the corridor and BRT systems and Pink BRT buses have begun operating from Numaish to Surjani while the double-decker busses will initially ply on Sharae Faisal and citizens will hear more good news, the senior minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit informed while speaking to the media at the launch ceremony.
The double-decker buses will arrive in the province next week and will first operate on Sharae Faisal, a major artery of the metropolis, while routes may be expanded if needed, he stated, adding that the Sindh government is working for all segments of society and will continue improving the travel facilities across the province.
The minister stated that special bikes were being prepared for children with disabilities and will be provided free of cost. He added that providing facilities to every segment of society is a shared responsibility and the Transport department was working on war footings with this goal in mind.
The Sindh government has expanded the Pink Bus service to support women and such services should be replicated in other provinces to facilitate the women, he urged and also highlighted the provincial government’s initiatives for supporting wheat cultivation through provision of free fertilizer to farmers and female specific house ownership rights in flood affected areas.
Sharjeel Memon termed personal attacks on family members as an inappropriate act and said that in the past, families were not targeted in politics. Women from all political parties deserve respect, he emphasized.
Responding to a query he said that equality and uniformity have been strengthened through constitutional amendments. Criticism of these amendments is unwarranted, he added, as major bar associations have supported them.

Punjab’s anti-smog measures succeed as AQI improves across major cities

0
LAHORE, Nov 19 (APP):The Punjab government’s Smog Mitigation Action Plan 2024-25 has clearly paid dividends as the major cities including the provincial capital Lahore basks in the sunshine and the air-quality index (AQI) has improved remarkably despite the advent of the winter.
With strict implementation of its policy of cutting down on crop-residue fires, upgrading industrial emissions monitoring, regulating brick kilns, and launching new air-quality infrastructure, the Punjab government has managed to achieve what the neighbouring countries have failed to manage on the impending smog threat.
In recent months the figures provided by the Punjab government show a 65 per cent reduction in reported stubble-burning incidents, verified by satellite and ground data, kiln-technology conversions, industrial emission-control system roll-out, and drone-based enforcement active across all sectors.
Experts observe that Lahore, among the most smog-affected cities in Pakistan, boasts of a clearer winter horizon as compared with the past years – a visible evidence of the “systems over slogans” approach.
Compared with Lahore which has gained in the fight against smog, New Delhi presents a bleak picture with complete smog blanket, school closures, public protests and “air-lockdown” alerts as the new normal.
Delhi is once again suffocating under toxic air. Reports show the city’s AQI reaching “very poor” to “hazardous” levels with public frustration boiling over into protests. One recent demonstration saw mothers and children take to the streets, placards in hand, demanding clean air.
A survey of Delhi-NCR residents found that seven in ten believe the government cannot enforce its own Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) or protect public health. Despite repeated “emergency mode” announcements including school closures, odd-even vehicle rules, and anti-smog towers structural reforms remain weak. Cloud-seeding trials may make headlines, but they offer only short-term relief, not root-cause solutions.
Under the World Bank-supported program, “Punjab Clean Air Program” aims to slash PM 2.5 levels by 35pc over the next decade by deploying thousands of super-seeders for farmers, 600 electric buses, and dozens of monitoring stations.
The difference between the two regions lies in focus and execution: In Punjab, the drive is data-led and preventive: mapping and monitoring sources of pollution, enforcing compliance, and mechanizing agriculture to reduce fires upfront while in Delhi, much of the effort remains reactive: fire drills, water sprays, misting systems, and “smog alerts” after the pollution has already formed. In effect, Punjab is building the system; Delhi is still trying to plug the leaks.
For Punjab, the challenge now is scale and sustainability: keeping enforcement tight, public participation high, and technologies updated. The province’s model is beginning to attract attention beyond its borders.
For Delhi and similar smog-prone cities, the message is clear: without structural change, crop-residue management, clean-industry enforcement, vehicle-emission overhaul, the annual smog cycle will persist.
As the skies clear over parts of Punjab and blur under brown haze in Delhi, the verdict is in: clean air isn’t accidental. It comes from bold policy, consistent enforcement and citizen participation.
The successful implementation of plans in Punjab offer hope against smog while Delhi’s story is of despair and warning.

PM Shehbaz calls for revival of tolerance as Pakistan’s foundational value on World Tolerance Day

0
ISLAMABAD, Nov 19 (APP):Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday led the World Tolerance Day celebrations here at the Prime Minister’s Office, reaffirming that the very philosophy behind the creation of Pakistan was rooted in tolerance, patience, and peaceful coexistence.
Addressing the gathering, the prime minister said that Pakistan emerged after immense sacrifices under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who brought together people from different walks of life, beliefs, and backgrounds.
He said Quaid-e-Azam’s historic August 11, 1947 speech will remain a guiding light “till the Day of Judgment,” reminding the nation that all faiths in Pakistan were to enjoy liberty and live together in harmony.
Recalling the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the prime minister said the Prophet’s example is “a great treasure” teaching patience, tolerance, and compassion. Citing the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, he said the Holy Prophet (PBUH) chose peace and restraint despite the companions’ desire to complete Hajj in the face of opposition.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said that World Tolerance Day invites Pakistanis to relearn the greatest lessons of forgiveness and moral courage. Referring to the conquest of Makkah, he said that even the fiercest opponents of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)admitted their mistake and recognized the truth of his message of compassion and brotherhood.
He stressed that tolerance and patience are shared values across all revealed religions, including the teachings of Prophet Isa (AS). “If we revive these values of tolerance, compassion, and unity, Pakistan’s society will once again stand strong and dignified,” he added.
The PM appreciated the soulful presentation of South Punjab Sufi poet’s verses by Areeb Azhar during the ceremony and prayed for Pakistan where all schools of thought and all faith communities live in peace and dignity. He urged citizens to pledge not only to speak of tolerance but to demonstrate it through their actions.
“Pakistan Paindabad,” he concluded.
Minister for Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, highlighted Quaid-e-Azam’s vision for a tolerant and harmonious Pakistan. He said tolerance was central to the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), especially in caring for the poor, the vulnerable, and the specially-abled.
He emphasized the importance of protecting minority rights, respecting transgender citizens, and empowering school-going girls.
Former Senator Kamran Michael praised the prime minister’s leadership, saying that his efforts to promote tolerance would bring “grassroots-level impact.” He said Pakistan’s centuries-old traditions of love and coexistence must guide society in rejecting intolerance.
The event featured a Sufi kalam performance by Areeb Azhar and a video message from Dr. Samuel Rizk, UNDP Resident Representative, who said that tolerance is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s history and culture.
He noted that Pakistan has ratified seven core UN human rights conventions, all based on equality and non-discrimination. Quoting Quaid-e-Azam, he recalled: “Our object should be peace within and peace without.”
NCSW Chairperson Umme Laila Azhar said the spirit of tolerance is embedded in Pakistan’s constitutional values, guaranteeing freedoms irrespective of gender, belief, identity, ethnicity, or background.
She stressed Pakistan’s responsibility to counter intolerance and hate speech under global frameworks such as the UN and UNESCO, adding that gender-based intolerance remains a daily challenge.
The ceremony concluded with the cake cutting by the prime minister flanked by ministers and members from the minorities and civil society.
