CAPS Int’l seminar explores new avenues of cooperation between Pakistan & Oceania

ISLAMABAD, Jul 17 (APP):The Consortium for Asia-Pacific Studies (CAPS) on Thursday hosted the day-long hybrid seminar titled “Bridging Pakistan and Oceania” here, drawing participation from scholars, diplomats, and policy experts from Pakistan and Oceania.

The event marked a renewed commitment to exploring shared challenges and opportunities between the two regions, said a press release.
They discussed the ways to foster mutual understanding and explore collaborative opportunities in tourism, cultural linkages, and climate resilience.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Khuram Iqbal, President of CAPS, welcomed the delegates and underscored Pakistan’s evolving engagement with Oceania through geo-economic alignment and South-South cooperation. He reaffirmed CAPS’s mission to advance regional partnerships and address development challenges, particularly in sectors such as climate and health.
Dr. Isimeli Waibuta Tagicakiverata, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Fiji National University, delivered the keynote address virtually, pointing to shared colonial histories, agricultural structures, and tropical climates as common ground for cooperation. Looking toward 2030 and the upcoming SDG deadlines, he emphasized the urgent need to address climate change impacts.
He urged greater bilateral engagement in disaster response, sports diplomacy, and climate resilience, adding that lessons from Pakistan’s experience could benefit Pacific Island nations like Fiji.
The seminar’s first session, “Promoting Sustainable Tourism,” was chaired by Ambassador Naela Chohan, Pakistan’s former envoy to Australia, and moderated by Dr. Gulshan Rafiq of NUST.
Speakers stressed the need to project Pakistan’s tourism image globally while developing community-based and sustainable models.
Asaf Javed Chaudhry of Samsons Group highlighted Swat’s tourism revival, describing the shift “from hidden gems to global tourist destinations.”
Dr. Waqas Saleem, Executive Director at Lok Virsa, emphasized the value of heritage tourism and intangible cultural assets in projecting a positive image of Pakistan.
Dr. Irram Waheed from NUST presented branding strategies, drawing parallels with New Zealand and warning that without self-representation, “others may define us unfairly.” Meanwhile, Naomi Wambea from Papua New Guinea joined virtually to share regional challenges in tourism development, citing infrastructure gaps and the need for youth engagement.
She discussed the untapped potential of PNG’s tourism sector, which is hindered by a lack of infrastructure, capacity, and training. PNG, acknowledging these challenges, has begun investing in youth and engaging NGOs to promote responsible and sustainable tourism.
The second session, “Beyond Borders: Shared Climate Stories and Solutions from Pakistan and Oceania,” featured Sardar Bakhsh, a CAPS climate expert, who spoke on shifting monsoon trends and regional climate vulnerabilities. He noted that both South Asia and Oceania are well-positioned to raise a unified voice for climate financing on global platforms.
Ms. Sheeba Tariq from NUST discussed prospects for cooperation in disaster risk management, while emphasizing the incorporation of AI technology to mitigate climate challenges and building indigenous capabilities rather than relying on foreign Aid.
Junior Yama from Papua New Guinea spotlighted youth activism in climate advocacy, while Yuhan Zheng from the University of Ireland emphasized the role of tech-driven startups in connecting underserved regions and driving innovation in sustainability.
In his closing remarks, Umair Pervez Khan, General Secretary of CAPS, reaffirmed the consortium’s commitment to building enduring linkages between Pakistan and Oceania. He called for practical steps to transform dialogue into sustained action, ensuring both regions benefit from mutual collaboration in key development sectors.

According to details, Hasnain, who has qualified for the final of U17 World Championship 2025 in the championship beat Oliwier Nizialek of Poland 4-1 76(41,34)-1, 69-8, 88(46,42)-0, 62-37) in the semifinal of the mega event.

UoS, NCHD ink MoU to enhance academic, research activities

Sargodha, Jul 17 (APP):The University of Sargodha on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) to enhance academic, research, and civic engagement activities.
This MoU signed in a ceremony held here at UoS in which Director ORIC Prof Dr Ahmad Raza Bilal from UoS and Deputy Director Mahar Omar Draz Jhaweri from NCHD were present.
Deputy Director Mahar Omer Draz said that the MoU outlines a framework for mutual cooperation, focusing on initiatives that promote academic excellence and social responsibility.
He said ghat the partnership will facilitate joint research projects, aiming to address pressing social issues and contribute to policy development. “The collaboration will also focus on promoting civic engagement and community service, aligning with the NCHD’s mission to empower communities through education and social development”, Jhaweri added.
On the occasion, UoS Director ORIC Prof Dr Ahmad Raza Bilal that under this MoU the UoS will provide academic expertise, access to research facilities, and administrative support to facilitate collaborative efforts.
He said that the University will facilitate training opportunities for Social Work students in collaboration with the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) to enhance students’ skills relevant to field of Social Work.

PFA seals four food production units in Thokar area

LAHORE, Jul 17 (APP):The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed four well-known food production units during a grand operation in Thokar Niaz Baig area here on Thursday.
According to PFA sources here under the supervision of Special Assistant to Chief Minister Punjab Salma Butt and lodged FIRs against the food business operators over forgery and hygiene violations.
Food safety teams conducted the operation on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister as part of the PFA’s ongoing crackdown againt food adulteration and forgery.
Food safety teams imposed fines worth Rs 1.2 million and discarded thousands of kilograms of expired and unsafe food items.
Salma Butt said that units were involved in repackaging expired chocolate and baking powder for supplying to renowned bakeries in Lahore.
She said that the teams discarded 10,000kg porridge, 3,200 bottles of cold drinks, 3,000kg chocolate, 144kg cake gel and 132kg baking powder. Cake gel used in bakery items was found uncovered and stored directly on the floor in unhygienic conditions.
Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister said that another unit producing counterfeit cold drinks of popular brands was also sealed.
Food safety team found expired raw materials, fake labels, unapproved formulas, insect infestation and poor hygiene during the inspection.
The counterfeit drinks were being supplied to local marts and superstores.
She further said that habitual violators would be sent behind bars and reiterated that PFA would not compromise on food safety standards under any circumstances.
She requested the public to report any food-related complaints to the PFA helpline 1223 so timely action could be taken.

Four profiteers held

SARGODHA, Jul 17 (APP):The district administration arrested four shopkeepers for profiteering in various parts of city, here on Thursday.
According to official sources, the price control magistrates inspected various points, including Sillanwali Road, Istaqlalabad and Chungi No. 9 and found that shopkeepers including Shoukat, Anwar, Riaz and Gulzar were involved in profiteering.
The magistrates got registered cases and also imposed fines on them.

12-days HPV vaccination drive to start from Sept 15

LODHRAN, Jul 17 (APP):A special meeting focused on public health initiatives was held under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue (ADCR) Syed Waseem Hassan.
The meeting reviewed HPV, measles and dengue prevention issues.
Addressing the meeting, ADCR Syed Waseem Hassan emphasized the importance of timely vaccination against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) — the virus primarily responsible for cervical cancer in females.
The 12-day HPV vaccination campaign will run from September 15 to 27, 2025, aiming to immunize 120,526 girls aged 9 to 14 years across Lodhran district. According to CEO Health Dr. Farhan Saeed Sameja, extensive arrangements have been made to ensure the campaign’s success. As many as,94 Outreach teams, 73 First-Level Supervisors, 8 Fixed Vaccination Teams, 102 Skilled Vaccinators, 102 Team Assistants, 196 Social Mobilizers and 73 Waste Management Focal Persons would participate in the campaign.
The ADCR highlighted that HPV was currently the only vaccine proven to prevent cervical cancer and confirmed that the vaccine will be included in the routine immunization schedule following the campaign.
To ensure maximum public awareness and participation, Syed Waseem Hassan directed all departments to fully cooperate and fulfill their responsibilities.
Assistant Commissioners were asked to issue directions to local patwaris and Numberdars to supervise the campaign’s implementation in their respective areas.
Religious and community leaders to be actively involved, including mosque imams who will make announcements after prayers.
The Social Welfare department was directed to coordinate with NGOs and involve their community workers in awareness drives.
The Education department to compile school-wise data lists of female students aged 9 to 14 years of all government and private schools.
ACs would lead the vaccination drive in the district. ADCR directed better arrangements regarding the drive.
CEO Health Dr Farhan Sameja told the meeting that the drive would be launched through out reached and fixed teams.
WHO representative Dr Qaisar, deputy district health officer Dr Rasheed Anjum and others were present.

Rain likely in city on Friday

BAHAWALPUR, Jul 17 (APP):The local Meteorological Department has forecast that rain might lash Bahawalpur region on Friday.
According to a forecast, rain system still persist in the region and Bahawalpur might receive rain on Friday. It urged the departments concerned to make arrangements to tackle with any situation caused by heavy rains.
On Thursday, highest maximum temperature was recorded at 36 Celsius and the lowest minimum at 28 Celsius. Rain has also forecast for rest of the region.

Preventive steps taken ahead of monsoon storms: DC Sialkot

SIALKOT, Jul 17 (APP):Deputy Commissioner Sialkot Saba Asghar Ali has said that in light of the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, preventive measures are being taken in Sialkot district to deal with possible monsoon storms.
She was addressing a joint meeting of the District Emergency Board and the District Disaster Management Authority held under her chairmanship in the DC Office Committee Room. Officers of all concerned institutions attended the meeting.
Deputy Commissioner directed in the meeting that the district administration, police, Rescue 1122 and other institutions should remain alert at all times so that a prompt and effective response can be ensured in any possible emergency situation.
She said that special safety measures should be taken in dilapidated buildings and low-lying areas, while an effective coordinated surveillance system should be kept active at the district level.
Deputy Commissioner directed to keep all disposal stations in a functional state and issue duty rosters for the staff deployed at the emergency rain camps.
Saba Asghar Ali also directed the concerned authorities to ensure timely availability of machinery. The public was appealed to avoid going near ponds, canals and rivers and avoid bathing in rainwater to avoid any loss of life.
District Emergency Control Room Sialkot has been activated 24 hours. Citizens can call 1718 for immediate information and assistance in any emergency situation.
She urged the citizens to fully cooperate with the district administration and relief agencies and ensure implementation of government instructions so that precious lives and properties can be protected.

Rivers Indus, Jhelum continue to flow in low, medium flood: FFC

ISLAMABAD, Jul 17 (APP):The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that currently River Indus is flowing in medium flood at Guddu and in low flood at Tarbela and Sukkkur.
According to daily FFC report on Thursday, River Jhelum at Mangla is likely to remain between low to medium flood while at Rasul it may rise to high flood during the next 24 hour. Urban flood is also anticipated in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Faisalabad Division during the said period due to scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls during the said period.
The combined live storage of Tarbela, Chashma and Mangla reservoirs stands at 8.328 million acre feet.
Heavy rainfall over the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi caused a sharp rise in water levels in Lai Nullah.
The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) Lahore has forecasted widespread thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls and torrential rains at few places over Islamabad and Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sargodha Divisions) during the next 24 hour.
Scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls may also occur over Punjab (Lahore and Sahiwal Divisions) including the upper catchments of all the major rivers during the said period.
