Historic Resolution of Accession to Pakistan remains defining moment in region’s history: APHC-AJK chapter

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP): The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) chapter has said that the historic July 19, 1947 resolution reflects the Kashmiris’ deep-rooted and unconditional love for Pakistan, as it was on this day that the Kashmiri leadership unanimously decided to link the future of Jammu and Kashmir with Pakistan.
APHC-AJK Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi, in a statement issued on Saturday, said that the historic Resolution of Accession to Pakistan unanimously adopted by the Kashmiri leadership in Srinagar on July 19, 1947 remains a defining moment in the region’s history, Kashmir Media reported.
He emphasized that the resolution continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Kashmiri people’s freedom struggle and a symbol of their unwavering bond with Pakistan.
Safi noted that the decision reflected the collective will, aspirations, and emotional attachment of Kashmiri Muslims, who chose to align their future with Pakistan based on shared political, cultural, and religious values.
Other APHC-AJK leaders, including Mehmood Ahmed Saghar, Altaf Hussain Wani, Syed Faiz Naqashbandi, and Shamim Shawl, in their separate statements from Islamabad, reiterated that the July 19, 1947 resolution remains profoundly relevant today especially in the context of the evolving political situation in India.
They described the 19th July Resolution as a historic declaration that showcased the Kashmiri leadership’s resolve to protect the identity, culture and political future of the majority population of the territory.
“The resolution represented the will of nearly 85 percent of the state’s population and affirmed their inherent right to self-determination,” they stated.
Despite decades of brutal repression, Kashmiris remain undefeated in their pursuit of freedom from Indian occupation and will continue to draw strength from this foundational political resolution of 19 July 1947.
They said that the day had also assumed great significance in the history of Kashmir because the historic resolution was adopted a month before the creation of Pakistan and India under the Partition Plan.
“This was the reason that the day when Pakistan came into being as a sovereign independent state, was celebrated throughout Jammu and Kashmir with great fanfare”, the statements said. They said that it was an undeniable fact that Jammu and Kashmir was geographically, historically and culturally linked to Pakistan.
Referring to the Kashmiris’ matchless sacrifices, they said the people of Kashmir have rendered matchless sacrifices to achieve the cherished goal of freedom.

Pakistan reels under monsoon deluge sweeping the country: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 19 (APP): The United Nations Friday highlighted the damages caused by monsoon rains in Pakistan that led authorities to declare disaster zones across parts of the Punjab province where lethal cloudbursts and flash floods killed dozens in a single day.

In a report published on its website, the UN said that at least 63 casualties and 290 injuries were reported in the past 24 hours, pushing the nationwide toll since the seasonal rains began on 26 June to over 120 fatalities, citing the National Disaster Management Authority.

The unfolding crisis – rising rivers, forecasts of further downpours, fragile rural homes collapsing and transport links severed – has revived stark memories of the catastrophic 2022 floods that submerged a third of the country and affected more than 33 million people.

Weather forecasters have warned of “exceptional high” flood levels of up to 450,000 cusecs at some locations along the Jhelum River. One cusec equals one cubic foot of water – equivalent to 28.4 litres or 7.5 gallons – per second.

There are also fears of glacier lake outburst floods in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan regions, the report said.

Managed by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN presence in Pakistan released an inter-agency monsoon contingency plan earlier this month.

The plan lays out response triggers, sector roles and arrangements for floods, storms and landslides – under the leadership of the Government.

However, pre-positioned aid supplies remain far below projected need, with key sectors such as protection, nutrition, and shelter and non-food items facing severe gaps.

These shortfalls underscore the urgency of pre-positioning relief items and securing rapid financing if the rains intensify.

Amid the emergency, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Pakistan this week launched a climate-risk project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Buner and Shangla districts.

The initiative will establish early warning systems, train communities in safe evacuation and strengthen local capacity for disaster response.

“Recurring climate shocks are a driver of hunger and malnutrition, threatening lives, livelihoods and entire food systems,” said WFP Country Director Coco Ushiyama.

“This project represents a multi-layered investment in early warning systems and action.”

The escalating disaster once again reveals Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate shocks, iot was pointed out.

In 2022, unprecedented monsoon floods killed more than 1,700 people, displaced millions and devastated water systems, leaving millions more in desperate need. The disaster also inflicted immense economic damage estimated at nearly $40 billion, and reversed years of development efforts.

Experts warn that erratic monsoon patterns, amplified by climate change, are hitting the country – and others across southern Asia – harder each year.

The Multan Chamber, backed by other South Punjab chambers and trader groups, emphasized that future actions will depend on the government’s response and the outcome of the reform committee’s recommendations.
