Timeless folk tale “Saif-ul-Mulook” brought to life at PNCA-a cultural tribute to sufi heritage

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):The spellbinding magic of Sufi romance returned to the stage as the classic Punjabi folk tale “Saif-ul-Mulook” was theatrically performed at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) late Friday.
The event, held in collaboration with Dolphin Communication, was not merely a performance but it was a celebration of Pakistan’s rich literary and spiritual heritage.
Directed by acclaimed writer and CEO of Dolphin Communication, Ms. Asma Butt, the play paid homage to the legendary work of Hazrat Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, whose poetic masterpiece has echoed through generations with its soulful verses, profound mysticism, and tale of eternal love.
The audience, comprising people from all walks of life including artists, intellectuals, writers, and students was transported into the mystical world of Prince Saif and Fairy Badi-ul-Jamal. Against the backdrop of poetic narration, the drama unfolded the timeless themes of divine love, sacrifice, and spiritual awakening-core elements of our folk tradition.
Member of the National Assembly Shazia Farid, who graced the occasion as chief guest, praised the production and Asma Butt’s creative direction. “Bringing Saif-ul-Mulook to the stage is not just storytelling but cultural preservation,” she remarked. “This play reflects the depth of our folklore and the emotional sensitivity of our artists. I congratulate the entire team for such a mesmerizing performance.”
Also present among the distinguished guests were Dr Waqar Azim, PNCA Program Organizer; Judge Raheel Yousafzai; Saeen Ejaz, Naveed Kanwal, Naeem Pasha, Shakeel Awan, Abid Abbasi, and others who expressed admiration for the revival of such meaningful content.
A vibrant ensemble of actors from Rawalpindi and Islamabad delivered compelling performances, including Kaleem Khan, Nirmal Ali, Arshad Khan, Shazia Adeeb, Jhalak Ali, Raiha Yousaf, Shama Adil, Afzal Latifi, Raheel Ejaz, Shabbir Shah, Aslam Mughal, Arshad Mehmood, Mehboob Ilyas, Muhammad Ali, Mumtaz Khan, Farooq Jani, Noor, and others.
A special moment that captivated the audience was Afzal Latifi’s soul-stirring rendition of Mian Muhammad Bakhsh’s verses, which filled the hall with a spiritual ambiance, drawing spontaneous applause. The play’s direction, set design, and traditional music created a deeply immersive experience, reminding the audience of the rich oral and poetic traditions of Punjab and Kashmir.
In her concluding remarks, Asma Butt said, “This production was a labor of love, and its success is the result of collective passion and teamwork. Our aim was not just to entertain, but to reconnect the audience with their roots, their language, and the beauty of their folk heritage.”
The play concluded to a standing ovation, with the hall echoing with applause and heartfelt tributes to the cast and crew.
The audience left not only entertained, but emotionally touched and spiritually enriched which is a true testimony to the enduring power of Pakistan’s cultural stories.

NDMA warns of  flood threats nationwide; urged public to stay alert until Friday

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):A powerful southwest monsoon system coupled with a westerly wave has prompted the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) to issue wide-ranging impact-based weather alerts across Pakistan, warning of potential flash floods, urban inundation, and glacial water surges from July 19 to 25, (Saturday to Friday).
The alerts cover vulnerable districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad, where heavy rains are expected to disrupt daily life and pose serious risks to low-lying and mountainous communities.
NDMA has directed disaster management authorities to remain on high alert, expedite drainage clearance, and prepare emergency teams for rapid response. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid high-risk travel, remain indoors during intense downpours, and follow official guidance via the NDMA Disaster Alert App.
The alerts cover potential flash floods and urban flooding across different regions of the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, low to moderate rainfalls are expected to continue up to July 25, with an increased risk of flash flooding in the upper catchments of major rivers. River Kabul at Nowshera and its tributaries such as River Swat, Panjkora, Bara, and Kalpani Nullah may experience rising water levels due to glacial melting and rain-induced inflows. There is a heightened flood risk in low-lying areas and disruption in transportation, especially in hilly and mountainous regions.
In Islamabad and Punjab, strong monsoon currents are expected to penetrate central and upper regions from July 21 to 24, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall across Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Taunsa, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.
Urban flooding is anticipated in major metropolitan cities due to heavy downpours, especially in low-lying zones.
Sindh is forecast to receive low to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms between July 19 and 24, affecting districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Thatta, Badin, Larkana, Jamshoro, Nawabshah, and Mirpurkhas. Urban flooding may occur in low-lying areas, streets and underpasses.
NDMA has urged authorities in vulnerable areas to swiftly clear drainage systems and ensure emergency teams are fully equipped to handle any eventuality.
The public is urged to remain indoors during periods of intense rainfall, keep drainage outlets clear, and safeguard essential household items.

Rawal Dam spillways to open on Sunday morning as water level rises

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):The spillways of Rawal Dam will be opened at 6:00 AM on Sunday (July 20) after the reservoir’s water level surged to 1,748 feet following continuous rainfall in the federal capital.
According to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the residents of low-lying areas, particularly those living along Korang Nullah, have been advised to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary movement near streams and water channels.
The statement said that the step was taken to regulate the dam’s water level and manage the increased inflow from the catchment areas.
Rescue teams, along with relevant authorities, have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergency situation. Citizens are urged to stay updated via official sources and cooperate with local administration.

RDA seals 17 illegal commercial properties in Midcity Apartments, Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI, Jul 19 (APP):In a decisive operation against illegal/unauthorized constructions, the Enforcement Squad od Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) sealed 17 illegally established commercial properties in the Midcity Apartments on Service Road, Mauza Gangal, here Saturday.
Acting under the directives of Director General RDA, Kinza Murtaza, the operation was led by the RDA Enforcement Squad with the support of the Old Airport Police Station. The team included the Assistant Director of Building Control, building inspectors, and other RDA officials.
The sealed properties include 10 offices, two apartments, one restaurant, and four hotels, notably among them Overseas Requirement Agency, Ghouri Town Offices, W B Centers, and J.D. Aviation, among others.
According to an RDA spokesperson, the owners of these properties were found in violation of approved plans and maps. They breached the Punjab Development of Cities Act 1976 and the RDA Building and Zoning Regulations 2020 by constructing illegal commercial buildings without approval or No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
The DG of RDA has directed the Land Use and Building Control (LU&BC) Wing to enforce strict measures against encroachments, unauthorized constructions and commercial activities impartially. Furthermore, the Building Control Wing has been tasked with surveying fees and charges related to the approval of illegal residential and commercial buildings, commercialization, and complementary building plans to regularize all such structures within RDA’s jurisdiction.
The RDA urges the general public to take moral responsibility in removing any form of encroachment to prevent further losses.

CM’s free Wi-Fi network extended to 430 points in Lahore

LAHORE, Jul 19 (APP):In line with the special directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has significantly expanded the scope of the CM Free Wi-Fi Service to enhance public access to digital connectivity.
In Lahore, the number of free Wi-Fi hotspots has been increased from 230 to 430, allowing a greater number of citizens to benefit from seamless internet access. Initially available in just 11 districts, the service is now operational in 22 districts of Punjab, with over 710 designated locations offering free internet access.
The initiative covers key cities including Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Hasan Abdal, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree, among others. Citizens can conveniently access the internet at these public points for essential use.
The entire system has been upgraded to the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, resulting in enhanced speed, improved stability, and the ability to support a larger number of simultaneous users. To date, over 37.22 million users have benefitted from this service, collectively consuming more than 905 terabytes of data.
According to a PSCA spokesperson, the service is intended for emergency and essential usage, including access to email, online education, the Women Safety App, and emergency communication. Citizens are advised not to use the service for video streaming or entertainment purposes to ensure bandwidth availability for critical needs.
The Punjab Safe Cities Authority remains committed to transforming Punjab into a digitally empowered province under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Plans are underway to further extend this free Wi-Fi service to the entire province in the near future.

Ikhtiar Wali slams Jamshed Dasti over obtaining educational certificates following reverse system

ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Information and Broadcasting on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Affairs, Ikhtiar Wali Khan, on Saturday slammed former Member of the National Assembly (ex-MNA) Jamshed Dasti for possessing fake educational certificates with a questionable sequence of years in which he obtained his academic certificates.
In a post on social media platform X, Ikhtiar Wali questioned the timeline of Dasti’s educational achievements, stating, “Where and how did you obtain your MA, then BA, then FA and then Matriculation? Furthermore, how do you find some kind of reverse education system?”
It is pertinent to mention here that Dasti, elected from NA-175, Muzaffargarh-I in general election 2024, was recently de-seated by the three-member bench of Election Commission of Pakistan on account of fake degree.
