Singapore polls underway as 48% of voters cast their votes as of noon
ANKARA, May 3 (AA/APP): Voting in Singapore’s general election is underway as over 48% of registered voters have cast their votes as of noon, according to the Election Department.
Over 1.26 million Singaporeans have cast their votes by 12 pm local time (0400GMT), which is about 48% of the total registered votes, Straits Times reported, citing the election authorities.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also cast his vote at his constituency at Evans Road in the Bukit Timah area in the city.
Earlier, the polling began at 8 am (0000GMT) and will continue till 8 pm (1200GMT).
The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) is aiming to extend its uninterrupted hold on power since independence in 1965.
Out of Singapore’s 6 million people, 2.76 million are eligible to vote in the five-year election cycle.
Voting is compulsory in the city-state where average turnout since 2001 has reached 94.2%, according to official data.
A total of 211 candidates from 11 political parties are competing for 97 seats in parliament.
Only the PAP, however, which has won all 13 general elections since independence, is fielding candidates in all constituencies.
Its main challenger, the Workers’ Party, is competing for 26 seats.
Only six parties are running for more than 10 seats each.
The election will decide the seats in 33 constituencies, 17 of which are multi-member group representation constituencies (GRCs) and 15 single-member constituencies.
Five seats have already been secured by the PAP in a walkover in one GRC, which is the first uncontested constituency since 2011.
Most races remain straight fights, with only five constituencies seeing more than two parties competing.
The brief nine-day campaign followed the official announcement on April 15.
The PAP is widely expected to retain its majority, although opposition parties are hoping to make modest gains, particularly in urban districts where cost-of-living concerns have been rising.
Singapore’s electoral landscape is shaped by strict campaigning rules and a centralized political culture, with the PAP emphasizing stability, economic growth, and social order in its campaign messaging.
Final results are expected late Saturday, though official declarations may follow after all votes are counted and reviewed, including overseas and postal ballots.

Around 8,890 intending Pakistani pilgrims arrive in Madinah so far
By Raziq Ali Shah
MADINAH al-MUNAWWARAH, May 03 (APP): The Pakistan Hajj Mission has so far received approximately 8,890 intending Pakistani pilgrims in Madinah by Saturday, who arrived through 35 flights operated by various airlines from major cities of Pakistan to perform their religious obligation under the government scheme.
As many as 12 flights, carrying 3,300 more pilgrims (guest of Allah Almighty) are scheduled to arrive in the holy City Madinah on Saturday, Spokesperson Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Muhammad Umer Butt told APP here.
Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah, is the fifth pillar and the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity in the world.
Hajj pilgrims from across the world are converging in Makkah for a five-day communion with Allah Almighty to seek forgiveness for their sins and invoke His blessings, starting from the 8th of Zilhajj.
The direct flight operation from major airports of Pakistan to the city of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) will continue for first 15 days following the launch of the pre-hajj flights operation on April 29.
Muhammad Umer Butt, told this agency that the ‘advanced caravans’—- 1st groups of Pakistani intending pilgrims who completed their eight-day stay in the city of the Prophet (PBUH), offering 40 prayers in Masjid-e-Nabvi (SAW) will depart for Makkah on May 7. These caravans will depart in accordance with the sequence of their arrival in Madinah, he explained.
Explaining the single-route system, the spokesperson said that all Pakistani pilgrims who arrive in Madinah will proceed to Makkah to perform the religious obligation of Hajj and then return to Pakistan via Jeddah. Those arriving directly in Makkah will follow the reverse route, visiting Madinah before returning to their home country, he added.
Umer Butt said that upon reaching Makkah, the guests of Allah Almighty will perform their first obligatory Umrah. Through Saudi Arabia’s Nusuk mobile app, pilgrims are continuing to offer Nawafil (optional prayers) in Riyaz ul Jannah, he said.
‘Worst-case scenario’ unfolds in Gaza as ‘brutal’ Israeli aid blockade threatens mass starvation: UN
UNITED NATIONS, May 03 (APP): Two months into a devastating Israeli aid blockade of Gaza food has run out and people are fighting over water amid relentless bombing, the UN’s humanitarian affairs coordination office (OCHA) has said.
Speaking from Gaza City OCHA spokesperson Olga Cherevko told journalists in Geneva that a friend of hers “saw people burning a few days ago from the explosions – and there was no water to save them.”
Since all entry points into the war-torn enclave were “sealed by the Israeli authorities for the entry of cargo” in March, the “worst-case scenario” was triggered, Ms. Cherevko said: supplies are depleting while the conflict rages on.
“Food stocks have now mainly run out, water access has become impossible,” she told journalists in Geneva.
As the veteran aid worker spoke, she noted that a “very violent fight” for access to water was taking place downstairs from her, with people throwing rocks and firing shots at a water truck which was pulling away.
The OCHA spokesperson said that every day she was seeing children “who have been deprived of their childhood for many months,” and elderly people “rummaging through piles of trash” in search of food and combustible material for cooking, in the absence of fuel.
During a visit on Thursday to Patient Friends Hospital, a paediatric hospital in Gaza City which had been attacked several times during the war, she heard reports of rising malnutrition rates.
“Hospitals report running out of blood units, as mass casualties continue to arrive,” Ms. Cherevko stressed, while precious fuel is being rationed.
Malnutrition cases among children in Gaza are increasing due to a lack of food.
“Gaza is inching closer to running on empty,” she added.
Ms. Cherevko said that UN humanitarians are “in constant contact” with the Israeli authorities and are advocating for border crossings to reopen. “We have mechanisms that mitigate diversion [and] ensure that aid reaches the people it’s intended to reach,” she said.
“We are ready to resume delivery at scale as soon as the crossings reopen, Ms. Cherevko insisted. “We stand by our pledge to remain principled and continue relieving people’s suffering, wherever they may be.”
In an appeal to the Israeli authorities on Thursday, the UN’s top humanitarian official and OCHA chief Tom Fletcher said, “Lift this brutal blockade. Let humanitarians save lives”.
Fletcher reaffirmed the urgent need for the release of hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023, who “should never have been taken from their families” and stressed that “aid, and the civilian lives it saves, should never be a bargaining chip”.
Ms. Cherevko said that over the past one and a half months, 420,000 people have been “once again forced to flee, many of them with only the clothes on their backs, shot at along the way, arriving in overcrowded shelters, as tents and other facilities where people seek safety, are being bombed”.
“I worry that five, 10, 20 years from now, we will look at our children and grandchildren in shame and we will not be able to explain to them why we could not stop this horror,” she concluded.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk. appealed on Friday for the world to prevent the total collapse of life-saving support in Gaza.
“As the complete blockade of assistance essential for survival enters its ninth week, there must be concerted international efforts to stop this humanitarian catastrophe from reaching a new unseen level,” Turk said.
Bakeries have ceased operations as flour and fuel have run out, and remaining food stocks are being rapidly depleted.
“Any use of starvation of the civilian population as a method of war constitutes a war crime, and so do all forms of collective punishment,” he warned.
The High Commissioner and head of human rights office OHCHR denounced a reported Israeli plan to declare Rafah governorate in southern Gaza as a new “humanitarian zone.”
Palestinians would be required to move there to receive food and other aid.
“Such a plan will almost certainly mean large parts of Gaza and those who cannot easily move – including people with disabilities, those who are sick or injured, and women supporting entire families – will be forced to go without food,” he said.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to strike locations in Gaza where Palestinian civilians are sheltering. Between 18 March and 27 April, OHCHR recorded 259 attacks on residential buildings and 99 on tents of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Most attacks resulted in fatalities, including of women and children. Among the strikes on IDP tents, 40 reportedly took place in Al-Mawasi area, where the Israeli army repeatedly directed civilians to seek refuge.

Pakistan is a peaceful country, ready for fair investigation into Pahalgam incident; Gilani
KARACHI, May 03 (APP): Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday said that Pakistan is a peaceful country and ready for a fair investigation into Pahalgam incident.
While addressing an Inaugural Ceremony of the Rotary International District Conference 2025 here, he said that there should not be a blame game by India before an investigation.
The Chairman Senate said that India is divering world attention from the real issue of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
He said that Today Pakistan was facing challenge and problems.
Gilani said that he was also a peace ambassador and asked the Rotarian to play their part in defusing tension between Pakistan and India.

He said that Pakistan is committed to making herself a polio free country.

Amid soaring India-Pakistan tensions, Pakistan to seek UNSC meeting when ‘appropriate’; Amb Asim
UNITED NATIONS, May 03 (APP): Pakistan is monitoring the situation stemming from India’s aggressive moves that followed last week’s attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir, and will seek a UN Security Council meeting when “appropriate” to do so, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said Friday.
“It is evident that there was an incident, but now what has evolved in terms of the situation, which is a real threat to regional and international peace and security, and we believe that the Security Council, in fact, has the mandate, it would be very legitimate for any member of the Council, including Pakistan, to request a meeting,” he told a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York.
The press conference was one of several actions Ambassador Asim, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, has taken to provide an update on this evolving situation to the international community, and Pakistan’s perspective.
“We have discussed that with the previous — last month’s Council’s presidency (France) — and this month’s presidency (Greece) — we are observing the situation very closely, and we have the right to convene a meeting, when we feel appropriate,” he said.
Ambassador Asim was answering a question on whether Pakistan is planning to ask for a meeting of the Security Council in the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan after the attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people on April 22.
On Thursday, Greece, which is the President of the UN Security Council for May, said that the Security Council was expected to meet “sooner rather than later” to discuss the situation between India and Pakistan, and this would be an opportunity to express views and to help diffuse tensions, voicing concern over heightening tensions between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours.
“Of course, if a request comes for a meeting then… I think this meeting should take place because, as we said, maybe it’s also an opportunity to have views expressed and this might help to diffuse a bit of tension. We will see,” Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN and President of the Security Council for the month of May, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris had said.
“We are in close contact… but this is something which might happen, I would say, sooner rather than later. We will see, we are preparing. It’s the first day of our (UNSC) presidency,” Sekeris had said.
Sekeris was briefing UN reporters here Thursday on the Council’s programme of work under Greece’s month-long presidency of the 15-nation body.
Asked about UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offer of good-offices to both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions, Ambassador Asim said Pakistan has welcomed the UN chief’s move. In fact, Pakistan has always offered its cooperation to any peace moves by UN Secretaries-General, he said.
Guterres’ offer was conditional on acceptance by both the parties. India has not responded to the secretary-general’s offer so far.
An Indian correspondent referred to Defence Minister’s Khawaja Asif’s statement about alleged Pakistani involvement in terrorism. Ambassador Asim said that the minister’s statement has been “twisted” and taken out of context.
In fact, he said, it was India which was involved in acts of terrorism not only against Pakistan but as far as North America, something that has been documented. Pakistan, he added, is a victim of terrorism.
“India’s conduct, marked by a disregard for international law and regional stability, is incendiary and dangerous, with the potential for far-reaching and disastrous consequences,” Ambassador Asim said.
Pakistan, he said, does not seek escalation, made clear by its political leadership and at all levels.
“At the same time,” he warned, “we are fully prepared to defend our sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Should India resort to aggression, Pakistan will exercise its inherent and legitimate right to self-defence, as enshrined in the UN Charter.”
Pakistan, he added, categorically rejects any attempt to link it with the Pahalgam incident in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
“Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations; Nothing justifies targeting of innocent civilians,”the Pakistani envoy said.
“We are concerned over the loss of lives in the Pahalgam attack, and we extended our condolences. As a victim of terrorism itself, no one can feel the pain of those impacted by this scourge like Pakistan.”
In response to India’s provocative and unilateral actions, he said, Pakistan’s National Security Committee (NSC), chaired by the Prime Minister, convened on 24 April and was obliged to undertake certain proportionate counter-measures.
“Of grave and particular concern is India’s irresponsible decision to hold in abeyance the historic Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 – a landmark, legally binding agreement brokered and guaranteed by the World Bank,” the Pakistani envoy said.
“Holding of IWT in abeyance is unilateral and illegal. There are no such provisions in the Treaty. India’s unilateral and unlawful actions are bound to undermine regional peace and stability with catastrophic implications.”
Pakistan’s National Security Committee, he said, has made it categorically clear that any attempt to stop or divert the natural flow of water that rightfully belongs to Pakistan in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty, and the usurpation of the rights of the lower riparian, will be considered as an “Act of War”. Such a move poses an existential threat to the people of Pakistan and will not be tolerated.
” If left unchecked by the international community, such actions risk setting a dangerous precedent that could undermine the legal rights for lower riparian states, potentially triggering new global conflicts over shared water resources,” Ambassador Asim added.
“We are deeply concerned by reports of widespread human rights violations in IIOJK, including arbitrary detentions, home demolitions, and collective punishment imposed on the innocent Kashmiri people,” he pointed out.
“Pakistan desires good neighbourly, peaceful and cooperative relations with all its neighbors, including India. We advocate for a relationship grounded in mutual respect, sovereign equality, peaceful co-existence and peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes. But this aspiration must be reciprocated – it cannot be a one-sided affair.”
