SSUET management clarifies circumstances surrounding recent dismissals

0
KARACHI, Jul 21 (APP):Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) management has clarified the circumstances surrounding the recent dismissal of employees at the University, particularly in light of the unfounded allegations.
According to spokesperson, the university administration strongly denies any claims of vindictiveness or unjust actions, maintaining that the dismissals were carried out diligently, in strict accordance with established legal and disciplinary procedures.
An inquiry committee was formed to evaluate the cases of those dismissed, chaired by the same person who has held a similar role in previous management. This continuity in leadership undermines any accusations of partiality or bias, rendering such allegations completely unsubstantiated.
The university reserves right to take appropriate actions against individuals whose conduct poses a threat to the institution’s growth and integrity.
Allegations of misconduct have been fueled by misinformation, particularly regarding an incident on May 3, 2025. During a period when the university was officially closed for a weekly holiday, various individuals, including some faculty members, unlawfully accessed university premises.
They forcibly entered restricted areas, including the Chancellor’s office and attempted to undermine the authority of the university—with the scandalous aim of unlawfully dismissing the Registrar,Commodore(R) Syed Sarfraz Ali.
This incident resulted in the disappearance of significant documents, files, checkbooks and laptops. In response, the university security team acted in accordance with its responsibilities by notifying local authorities and filing a report to initiate legal proceedings, thereby safeguarding the institution’s assets, reputation and staff.
It is essential to note that the actions of a few faculty members do not represent the views or positions of the entire fraternity, spokesperson said and added that the university will not tolerate any actions that undermine its mission or circumvent lawful governance.

Pakistan fully committed to achieving sustainable development goals: DPM

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 21 (APP):Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Monday said Pakistan remained fully committed to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and had undertaken different initiatives to financially protect people and enhance educational opportunities.
In a statement at the General Debate of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) Ministerial Segment at the United Nations in New York, he said, “With just five years remaining to 2030, only 35% of the SDGs are on track. The compounding effects of the pandemic, the food, fuel, and finance crises, as well as intensifying climate impacts, have reversed the hard-won development gains and deepened inequalities.”
“Despite these challenges, Pakistan remains fully committed to achieving the 2030 Agenda. Our national development strategies, such as Uraan Pakistan (Take-Off Pakistan), are aligned with the SDGs,” he noted.
The Deputy Prime Minister said, “Our social protection initiatives, including the Benazir Income Support Programme and Benazir Nashonuma (Child Growth Programs), are designed to ensure no-one is left behind.”
“To harness the potential of our youth, we have launched the Digital Youth Hub and are expanding access to quality education through Danish Schools and new university campuses,” he added.
“We are scaling up climate action, targeting 60% renewable energy by 2030, and enhancing resilience through initiatives such as Recharge Pakistan and the Living Indus. Our revised nationally determined contribution is nearing finalization,” he told.
Ishaq Dar said, “We have also undertaken key macroeconomic reforms to stabilize our fiscal outlook and make the investment climate even more attractive. The Special Investment Facilitation Council is channelling direct foreign investment in priority sectors.”
“While national efforts are essential, these cannot succeed in isolation,” he said and called for deep reform of the international financial architecture, critical for implementing the SDGs.
He urged that developing countries needed scaled up access to concessional and grant-based resources, meaningful debt relief, and scaled-up climate finance in order to bridge the SDG Financing Gap.
“The Compromiso de Seville, adopted at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, offers a clear roadmap. Its implementation must begin without delay,” he stressed.
The Deputy Prime Minister said, “As we commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations, the Secretary General’s UN80 initiative offers an opportunity for a critical re-think to strengthen the three pillars of the United Nations and renew our commitment towards timely achievement of the SDGs.”

Terror and chaos for Gaza’s people now entering ‘death phase’: UNRWA

By Iftikhar Ali
UNITED NATIONS, Jul 21 (APP): After another deadly weekend in Gaza in which at least 67 Palestinians were killed seeking food, UN aid teams on Monday described the “mayhem” and starvation in the devastated enclave as the Israeli military pushed into Deir Al-Balah for the first time.
In an alert, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, relayed desperate testimonies from its colleagues who are also struggling to survive in Gaza.
“We’re in the death phase,” one UNRWA worker reportedly said. “Everything around people at the moment is death, whether it’s bombs or strikes, children wasting away in front of their eyes from malnourishment, from dehydration, and dying.”
Doctors and nurses who continue to work in the UN agency’s clinics and medical centres “are watching children disappear and die in front of their eyes, and there’s absolutely nothing that they can do about it,” the worker continued.
The development comes after desperate Gazans seeking aid came under fire at the weekend “from Israeli tanks, snipers and other gunfire”, according to the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
In a detailed statement after the incident on Sunday 20 July, it explained that a 25-truck lorry convoy crossed the Zikim border point in northern Gaza “destined for starving communities”.
Shortly after passing the final checkpoint after the Zikim crossing point, the convoy encountered large crowds of civilians waiting to access food supplies. This was when the shooting began, leaving “countless” Gazans dead, WFP said, echoing reports by the health authorities.
Condemning the incident, WFP noted that the victims “were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation”.
The UN agency said furthermore that the violence had happened “despite assurances from Israeli authorities that humanitarian operational conditions would improve; including that armed forces will not be present nor engage at any stage along humanitarian convoy routes.”
Without such fundamental guarantees, it will not be possible to continue providing life-saving support across the Gaza Strip, WPF said, its reaction coming a day after a reported 36 people seeking aid were reportedly killed close to a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation hub run by the Israeli and US in the south of the Strip.
In central Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah, meanwhile, 50,000 to 80,000 people have been impacted by a mass displacement order issued by the Israeli military – the first since war erupted on 7 October 2023.
“The new order cuts through Deir Al-Balah all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, further splintering the Strip,” OCHA said. “It will limit the ability of the UN and our partners to move safely and effectively within Gaza, choking humanitarian access when it is needed most.”
UN staff remain in Deir Al-Balah across “dozens of premises” whose coordinates have been shared with the warring parties. “These locations – as with all civilian sites – must be protected, regardless of displacement orders,” OCHA insisted, as  Israeli tanks reportedly moved into southern and eastern areas of the city.
According to reports, this may be where some of the remaining hostages seized in Hamas-led terror attacks on 7 October 2023 in Israel may still be held.
The latest evacuation order means that almost 88 per cent of Gaza is impacted by displacement orders or falls within Israeli-militarized zones. Some 2.1 million civilians who have been uprooted multiple times are now squeezed into the little remaining space, where essential services have collapsed.
“There’s nowhere for [Gazans] to escape. They are trapped,” said UNRWA Senior Emergency Officer Louise Wateridge. “They cannot leave the Gaza Strip. They’re trying to keep their children alive. They’re trying to keep themselves alive.”
In comments to UN News, an international media website, the veteran humanitarian explained that no food is available and only very limited water, explaining why so many desperate Gazans risk their lives to fetch aid from the few distribution centres and arrival points still operational.
“Children are malnourished, they’re dehydrated, they are dying in front of their [parents’] eyes,” Ms. Wateridge continued. “The bombs and the strikes are continuing; there’s no way to run, there’s nowhere to hide. There’s no way to escape there.”

QUETTA, Jul 21 (APP):Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti strongly condemned the recent double murder of a man and woman in Degari, describing it as a brutal and unlawful act that neither society nor the government will tolerate.
Addressing a press conference alongside provincial ministers, Bugti clarified that both individuals were already married and each had five children, rejecting viral claims that the victims were newlyweds.
Bugti revealed that 11 suspects have been arrested so far, with more raids underway. He also noted that he had instructed the Inspector General of Police to initiate swift action even before the video of the incident went viral.
The Chief Minister took a firm stance against illegal tribal courts (jirgas), which are often accused of legitimizing such acts. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to dismantling parallel justice systems, asserting, “Justice must be delivered through legal institutions, these jirgas have no place in modern society.”
Calling the case a “test case” for the state, Bugti framed it as a chance to demonstrate Pakistan’s resolve against unlawful killings and to uphold human rights, especially in rural areas where tribal customs still persist.
Amid growing misinformation online, Bugti urged the public to verify content before sharing. “This is the age of social media, where falsehood spreads faster than facts. People deserve the truth,” he said.
In a separate briefing, Bugti provided updates on ongoing counter terrorism operations, reporting the neutralization of multiple attacks and the killing of 10 militants linked to the group Fitna al-Hindustan. He assuring the public that the security situation in the province is steadily improving and there is no need for public fear.
“There will be zero tolerance for any elements undermining peace. Our commitment to advancing peace and development in Balochistan is unwavering, and this journey will continue,” he affirmed.
