Across China: China’s coal industry enters the AI era

0

TAIYUAN, July 23 (Xinhua/APP): In the depths of Malan coal pit in north China’s Shanxi province, the future of the age-old industry long associated with soot and sweat is being reinvented by the power of algorithms.

Dressed in neat work clothes, foreman Hao Yirui stood in front of an intelligent control screen above the shaft, monitoring in real time as automated machines carried out tasks deep in the mining face.

With the press of a button, a massive coal mining machine 300 meters underground automatically adjusted its cutting speed, height and direction. The drum then spun into action, slicing through coal with precision as it poured out and was steadily conveyed to the surface.

Instead of workers in helmets and headlamps, robotic patrol machines now move slowly along preset tracks, scanning equipment operation in a full 360 degrees. The once-familiar thud of pickaxes has been replaced by the quiet hum of servers.

Shanxi is one of China’s major coal-producing regions, akin to the Appalachian coal region in the United States. Over the past decade or more, as China has tightened production safety regulations to curb deadly accidents, coal mines here have been either shut down or driven to undergo technological transformation.

Consequently, a technological revolution is unfolding in an industry once known for backbreaking labor and hazardous conditions, marking an unexpected fusion of ancient resources with modern automation.

The AI-enabled transformation is palpable at Malan, a flagship mine operated by state-owned Shanxi Coking Coal Group.

“In the past, we relied on manual monitoring,” said Hao. “Today, AI-driven systems for early warnings and surveillance have largely replaced human guards.”

In the production command center where Hao works, a large display screen shows real-time footage and data from the mine’s various production operations.

Meng Qingcai, an engineer at Malan Mine, described unknown geological structures down in the pit as “hidden landmines” that pose a constant threat to safe production. “A precise identification is the ‘decoder’ for coal mine safety,” Meng said.

Li Bo, a miner who began as a support worker and is now a patrol worker, recalled, “Previously, I had to run back and forth constantly adjusting the supports while following the coal mining machine. It was utterly exhausting.”

“With the hydraulic support auto-follow system, I just supervise the machine’s operations now. It’s safer and less tiring,” Li added.

Moreover, AI-powered sensors mounted on mining machines enable finer detection of coal seam thickness and geological structures. This has significantly reduced the impurity content in raw coal and effectively improved coal quality.

“Our workforce is down by 40 percent, yet the production efficiency has soared, with output per shift increasing by over 60 percent compared to traditional coal mining,” Hao said.

So far, Malan Mine has established nine intelligent working faces. Shanxi now has 268 intelligent coal mines, ranking it among the top in the nation. Advanced coal production capacity accounts for 83 percent of the province’s total.

According to the 2025 provincial government work report, Shanxi plans to build 130 new intelligent coal mines.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 23 (APP): The High Commissioner of Rwanda to Pakistan, Fatou Harerimana, met with Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, on Wednesday to strengthen bilateral ties and promote sustainable urban development.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Rwanda and Pakistan in areas including city planning, infrastructure, tourism, and sustainable urban management. One of the key proposals discussed was the establishment of a sister-city relationship between Islamabad and Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.

“This partnership would foster long-term people-to-people connections, cultural exchange, and collaboration in areas like municipal management and green city solutions,” said Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa, adding that Rwanda’s experience in sustainable urban planning and wildlife conservation could offer valuable insights for Islamabad’s future development.

The Rwandan envoy was briefed on CDA’s recent progress, including completed infrastructure projects and ongoing initiatives to transform Islamabad into a modern, eco-friendly, and inclusive capital city.

Randhawa highlighted plans for developing a safari park in Islamabad, which he described as a conservation-driven recreational facility designed to promote tourism through close animal encounters in a jungle-themed environment.

“We are working to make Islamabad not only a functional capital but also a top destination for local and international tourists,” Randhawa said.

He also emphasized the Authority’s efforts to improve the diplomatic enclave and introduce more green public spaces in the city.

Fatou Harerimana commended the CDA’s achievements and expressed Rwanda’s interest in learning from Pakistan’s urban development model. “We admire the vision and initiatives being implemented under Chairman Randhawa’s leadership. Rwanda looks forward to deeper cooperation in capital city governance, sustainable development, and eco-friendly infrastructure,” she said.

Both sides agreed to explore collaborative opportunities in smart city technology, environmental sustainability, tourism, and institutional linkages to exchange technical expertise and best practices.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with a shared commitment to advancing bilateral relations through innovative urban planning and mutual learning.

As a gesture of goodwill, Chairman Randhawa presented a commemorative souvenir to the High Commissioner, symbolizing the beginning of a potential long-term partnership between Islamabad and Kigali.

Five arrested, one shop sealed in action against overpriced sugar sellers in ICT

0

ISLAMABAD, Jul 23 (APP): The price control magistrates on Wednesday sealed one shop and arrested five shopkeepers as part of ongoing operation by the Islamabad district administration against retailers charging above the official sugar price.

According to the spokesman of ICT administration, in response to rising complaints about overpriced sugar in markets, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has intensified its action against profiteers.

Acting on the directives of Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon, the price control magistrates carried out surprise inspections in various parts of the city.

Several grocery stores were found selling sugar at rates higher than those set by the government. As a result, one shop was sealed, and five shopkeepers were taken into custody for violating official price guidelines.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon has directed that action must be taken without discrimination against all retailers who fail to comply with the notified sugar rates. He instructed officials to ensure that no store is allowed to overcharge, and strict penalties should be imposed where violations are found.

The crackdown aims to ensure price stability and protect citizens from unjustified increases in daily-use commodities. Memon emphasized that any officer found negligent in enforcing the official sugar rate in their assigned area would also face disciplinary action.

“Strict enforcement is necessary. If sugar is being sold at inflated prices in any locality, the concerned area officer will be held accountable,” he stated during a meeting with monitoring teams.

The district administration has also urged the public to support the effort by reporting shops that are charging more than the official rate. “We request citizens to help us identify those selling sugar at inflated prices. Their cooperation is important to keep prices under control,” the DC said.

To improve monitoring, the Additional Deputy Commissioner General has been tasked with submitting detailed reports on price compliance across all zones of Islamabad. The goal is to maintain transparency in market operations and address pricing irregularities quickly.

Teams of price control magistrates will continue inspections in both urban and rural sectors, including busy commercial areas and small neighborhoods. They have been told to check not only sugar prices but also other essential items listed under government-fixed rates.

DC Memon has also warned shopkeepers against hiding their rate lists or refusing to display them. All retailers are required to clearly show the official price list at a visible spot inside their shops. Any violation will lead to legal action.

In a recent public message, the ICT administration reiterated that the government’s notified rate of sugar must be implemented without exception. Authorities said that profiteering during times of inflation adds an extra burden on households and will not be tolerated.

The public has been encouraged to report any complaints related to overpricing through official helplines and mobile applications launched by the administration.

Officials said that all administrative officers have been instructed to maintain a visible presence in their areas, especially during peak shopping hours, and coordinate with local traders to ensure compliance with the rules.
