Rawalpindi Admin continues to be on high alert with rain emergency imposed

RAWALPINDI, Jul 14 (APP):The administration in the Rawalpindi city on Monday continued to be on high alert with emergency imposed in the wake forecast of heavy rains from July 15 to August 31.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, 33 mm of rain was recorded at Saidpur, 11 mm at Bokra, and 18 mm at Golra till Monday evening.
Commissioner Rawalpindi Engineer Amir Khattak chaired a meeting of the Divisional Coordination Committee to review the situation caused by persistent rains in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The Deputy Commissioner Murree, Additional Commissioner Coordination, Additional Deputy Commissioner General, and officials of Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, Disaster Management Authority and other departments concerned participated in the meeting.
The officials of Rawalpindi and Chaklala cantonment boards were also taken on board.

The meeting was told that the Pakistan Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rains in Rawalpindi with flood situation from July 15 to August 31.
It was further informed that with rain emergency imposed in the city, leaves of all the staff of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) had been cancelled.
Commissioner Khattak directed the WASA staff to particularly remain on high alert and ensure immediate drainage of water from low-lying areas during rains.
The commissioner noted that with digital monitoring of Leh Nullah, timely awareness about water situation was being provided to the public.
The meeting was informed that round the clock  monitoring of nullahs and storm drains was being done.
A central control room had been established for monitoring flood situation and taking steps accordingly, while Rescue 1122, WASA and other agencies were on high alert.
Boats and life jackets had been provided to relevant agencies, the meeting was briefed.
A mock exercise for coping with flood situation had also been done, it was told.
Seven flood relief camps were established in schools near low-lying areas in the city, where food, water, medicines, shelter and security facilities were made available.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Forecasting Centre Islamabad warned that the water level in the Leh Nullah at Kattarian and Gawalmandi might rise to 11.4 feet and 8.3 feet.
According to WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf, the Agency was fully prepared to deal with any kind of emergency.
WASA staff with heavy machinery was already deployed in low-lying areas, including Committee Chowk Underpass on  Murree Road, he added.
He said they were monitoring the drains across the city, where water flow at present was normal.

FIA Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad Cracks Down on Illegal Appointments

ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (APP):The FIA Anti-Corruption Circle Islamabad has arrested two accused individuals involved in illegal recruitments and abuse of authority.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Ghulam Muhammad Ali and Ikhlaq Malik.
Ghulam Muhammad Ali previously served as the Chairman of PARC (Pakistan Agricultural Research Council), while Ikhlaq Malik held the position of Director Establishment at PARC.
Both have been taken into custody on charges of unlawfully recruiting individuals and misusing their official powers.
According to FIA officials, the accused illegally appointed 332 individuals against 164 sanctioned posts in PARC, significantly exceeding the authorized number of vacancies.
Investigations have been formally initiated following their arrest. Raids are currently underway to apprehend other officials and personnel involved in the case.
The arrested suspects will be presented before the court today to obtain physical remand for further investigation.

Pakistan, UK agrees to deepen bilateral economic, trade ties

ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (APP):Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, held a meeting with Lord Wajid Khan, UK Minister of Housing, Communication, and Local Government, in London on Monday. High Commissioner Dr Mohammad Faisal was also present.
Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan is on an official visit to the United Kingdom from July 14 – 18, 2025,said a press release issued here.
The visit is aimed at deepening bilateral trade and investment ties and fostering inclusive economic growth.
Discussions were held on leveraging the strong Pakistan-origin diaspora in the UK comprising approximately 1.7 million people, as a bridge to strengthen economic and social linkages.
The Minister for Commerce informed Lord Khan about establishment of Pakistan–UK Business Advisory Council to channel diaspora expertise and networks toward enhancing trade, investment, and business linkages between the two countries.
Discussions also explored avenues for technical collaboration in urban development, affordable housing, and smart cities, building on the UK’s expertise in local government and urban planning.
Both sides agreed that linking Pakistani urban institutions with UK councils could pave the way for knowledge sharing and pilot programs, benefiting communities in both countries.
The Minister emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to inclusive growth and regional connectivity and invited UK support for municipal-level partnerships. He also extended an invitation to Lord Khan to visit Pakistan to witness firsthand the emerging opportunities for bilateral cooperation in key sectors.
This engagement underscores Pakistan’s renewed focus on diaspora-driven economic diplomacy and strengthening sectoral partnerships with the UK.

NA Committee on Privatization met

ISLAMABAD, Jul 14 (APP):The National Assembly Standing Committee on Privatization met on Monday under the Chairmanship of Muhammad Farooq Sattar and reviewed different agenda items.
The representative of the Ministry of Finance informed the committee that a sum of Rs 3 billion has been approved for Postal Life Insurance Company Limited (PLICL) and Rs 3 billion will be given in third and fourth quarters of the current financial year, as directed by the Standing Committee.
The committee was informed that the pre qualification committee finalized the following four parties including a consortium comprising Lucky Cement Limited, Hub Power Holdings Limited, Kohat Cement Company Limited, and Metro Ventures (Private) Limited for the Pakistan International Airlines Company (PIACL).
The Consortium comprising Arif Habib Corporation Limited, Fatima Fertilizers Company Limited, The City School (Private) Limited, and Lake City Holdings (Private) Limited and Fauji Fertilizer Company Limited and  Air Blue was also finalized.
These parties will be given access to virtual data room of PIACL.
The Committee passed the Privatization Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024—a government bill—by a majority vote.
The Members of National Assembly including Anwar Ul Haq Chaudhary, Chaudhry Mehmood Bashir Virk, Abdul Qadir Khan, Ms. Saba Sadiq, Nazir Ahmed Bhugio, Nauman Islam Shaikh, Ms. Sehar Kamran, Arshad Abdullah Vohra, Sanjay Pirwani, Muhamad Saad Ullah, Mehboob Shah,  Zulfiqar Ali, Moulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri besides the officials of the ministry attended the meeting.
