CM reviews measures in flood-hit areas of Chakwal

0
LAHORE, Jul 19 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited Chakwal on Saturday to personally assess the flood-affected areas and oversee the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
According to handout issued here, the CM also conducted an aerial survey of Takiya Shah Murad, Amirpur Mangan Lallani, Dhidwal, and the Dhamman Bridge, a critical connection between Chakwal and Jhelum, directing the authorities to expedite its repair and reconstruction.
During her visit, the chief minister inspected damaged homes, roads, and infrastructure, reviewing the pace of restoration work in the affected areas. She closely monitored the drainage of floodwaters and issued directions to accelerate relief operations.
At the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Chakwal, the CM announced a financial aid package for victims of the recent heavy rains. She approved Rs 5 million for those who lost their lives in roof collapse incidents, and Rs 1 million each for the families of four individuals who died in landslides during the rains. On her instructions, Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) and the Deputy Commissioner will personally visit the affected families and hand over the financial assistance cheques immediately.
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed the reactivation of the Civil Defence Force across Punjab, emphasizing the need for modern training programs to enhance the capacity of its volunteers. She also ordered the evacuation of mud houses ahead of the next spell of rain and instructed the authorities to provide relief camps or alternative shelter in government buildings for vulnerable families.
Reviewing the status of the Dohman Bridge, the CM ordered that it be reopened to traffic as soon as possible. The relevant departments assured her that a temporary steel structure would be installed within two days to allow small vehicles to cross. She further instructed the immediate repair and construction of six additional roads and bridges across the district, including the Balksar–Tehwa Bahadur–Chakwal Road, to be completed before the next round of monsoon rains.
Calling for a comprehensive strategy, she also asked for a survey report on a proposed small dam in Chakwal and emphasized the importance of long-term planning in view of climate change. “Natural disasters are beyond human control, life and death are in the hands of Allah Almighty,” she said. “While we have unfortunately lost lives due to drowning, roof collapses, and electrocution, the response from government institutions has been commendable.”
She urged Deputy Commissioners to remain in the field to oversee relief work and maintain public confidence.
The CM remarked, “Given the current flood situation, full-scale preparations must begin now for next year’s monsoon season.” She noted that she had obtained real-time updates from district administrations during the rain emergency and had requested detailed reports on damages to buildings and crops. “Alhamdulillah, no loss of life in Punjab occurred due to negligence on part of the administrative institutions,” she emphasized.
Deputy Commissioner Chakwal Sarah Hayat briefed the chief minister on relief and rescue operations, stating that despite over 400 mm of rainfall, Chakwal had returned to normal conditions. She highlighted that the Chowasidan Shah drain had carried four times its usual water flow, affecting six localities, six roads, and four bridges in the district. She further informed that desilting of rivers and drains, along with the activation of flood management equipment, had been completed prior to the rains. Flood drills, building surveys, and rescue exercises were also conducted in advance. She reported that during the record-breaking rain spell, 223 people were rescued by police and administration, 57 by Rescue 1122, and 27 were evacuated by helicopter.
Later, District Police Officer Ahmed Mohiuddin briefed the Chief Minister on the law and order situation in Chakwal. He reported a 30 to 40 percent decrease in incidents of theft and robbery, citing an overall improvement in public safety.
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif congratulated Commissioner Rawalpindi, Deputy Commissioner Sarah Hayat, and DPO Ahmed Mohiuddin for their effective management of the situation.

Pakistani nation stands with Kashmiris: Saad Rafique

0
LAHORE, Jul 19 (APP):Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Leader Khawaja Saad Rafique has said Kashmiris are not alone in their struggle for freedom, and that the entire Pakistani nation stands firmly behind them.
Addressing a big rally organized by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Jammu
and Kashmir to mark ‘Youm-e-Ilhaq-e-Pakistan’ (Accession to Pakistan Day) here on Saturday,
he said that the day is not far when Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) will rightfully become a part of Pakistan.
He said: “On this historic day, we are sending a clear message to the world through the platform of the Hurriyat Conference, Kashmiris are not alone. The nation stands united with them until their dream of freedom is realized.”
He recalled that on July 19, 1947, the leaders of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference had unanimously decided that Kashmir should accede to Pakistan. “That decision will be honored, no matter the cost,” he asserted.
Highlighting the resilience and spirit of the Kashmiri people, Saad Rafique said that India had failed to suppress their passion for freedom, despite deploying over 700,000 troops and committing countless atrocities. “As long as the right to self-determination is denied to the Kashmiri people, the region will remain a dangerous flashpoint in South Asia,” he warned.
“Lahore, the historic center of political movements, stands today in full solidarity with the oppressed people of Kashmir,” he said.
He said that when India attempted to threaten Pakistan, the nation and armed forces responded decisively, leaving no doubt about Pakistan’s readiness to defend its sovereignty.
He also drew attention to Israel’s brutalities in Gaza, stating that the Zionist regime is engaged in the genocide of Palestinians with the backing of global powers. However, he pointed out that voices from across the world, including Europe, are rising to demand an end to the violence and the recognition of Palestinian rights. “Gaza will soon be free, and the people of Palestine will live in peace and dignity,” he said.
Speaking at the rally, PML-N MPA Rana Muhammad Arshad said that Occupied Kashmir is an inseparable part of Pakistan. He called upon the United Nations to secure the immediate release of the Hurriyat leadership, and expressed full solidarity with the Kashmiri people.
Addressing the rally, Allama Syed Jawad Naqvi said that the atrocities committed by India against people of Kashmir will not go unanswered. “The day is not far when both Kashmir and Palestine will be free,” he declared. He warned that those responsible for the oppression of Kashmiris and Palestinians would soon become a lesson in history.
Leaders from various political and religious parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami and Tehreek Minhaj-ul-Quran,  also addressed
the rally, expressing solidarity with the oppressed people of Kashmir.
The rally, which started from Masjid-e-Shuhada on The Mall,  concluded in front of the Punjab Assembly.
A large number of citizens and prominent local Kashmiri representatives, took part in the march.
The participants raised resounding slogans such as “Kashmir will become Pakistan” and “We will fight until Kashmir is free,” echoing the nation’s unwavering commitment to the cause.

Junaid Chaudhry announces 50 % reduction in port charges at Karachi Port

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 19 (APP):Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced a major 50% reduction in port charges at Karachi Port, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of trade logistics and foster sustainable growth.
In a statement on Saturday, the minister announced the initiative as part of a broader strategy to decarbonize the maritime sector and improve energy efficiency in port operations. “By lowering operational costs and streamlining logistics, we are not only boosting trade competitiveness but also contributing to climate resilience,” Junaid Chaudhry stated.
The newly introduced reforms include a 50% cut in port handling, vessel, and storage charges, while scrapping the previously planned annual 5% hike in these fees, a move expected to benefit exporters of dry bulk goods and reduce emissions through faster, less congested port activity.
“This isn’t just a financial measure; it’s a pivot toward low-impact, future-ready maritime trade,” said minister. “A more efficient port reduces idle time for vessels, lowers fuel consumption, and supports greener supply chains.”
The minister highlighted that these changes are part national strategy to modernize port infrastructure, enhance sustainability, and transition towards smart maritime practices.
This announcement follows recent efforts of the maritime minister to enhance port efficiency, including forming a high-level committee to cut container dwell time by 70% and deploying advanced technologies such as AI and drones for monitoring operations, further underlining the government’s proactive stance in modernizing maritime trade logistics.
Junaid Chaudhry reaffirmed his commitment to aligning maritime sector with global environmental standards, stating: “A resilient economy goes hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. These reforms reflect the Prime Minister’s vision of a stable, green, and globally competitive Pakistan.”
As sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and maritime pollution intensify, the minister stated that climate adaptation is now being increasingly integrated into trade logistics, part of a broader strategy to establish the country as a sustainable maritime hub in the face of climate change.
