CM expresses deep grief over losses caused by heavy rains in KP

PESHAWAR, Jul 22 (APP):Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property caused by the recent spell of heavy rainfall across the province.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s House here, the CM extended heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the affected families.
He expressed profound grief over the death of ten individuals in various rain-related incidents and offered prayers for the departed souls, along with prayers for patience and strength for the bereaved families.
Gandapur also conveyed best wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured and directed the concerned district administrations to ensure the provision of the best possible medical treatment.
He emphasized that immediate relief and financial assistance must be provided to the affected families.
Furthermore, CM Gandapur instructed officials to present a detailed report on the damages caused by the rains, floods, and landslides.
He stressed the need for swift restoration of the damaged infrastructure and reaffirmed that the provincial government stands firmly with the victims during this difficult time.
“The affected people will not be left alone, and all possible assistance will be provided to them,” he assured.

Punjab govt rolls out new SOPs to improve facilities for prison visitors

LAHORE, Jul 22 (APP):The Punjab government on Tuesday issued new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to facilitate visitors meeting inmates in jails, as part of the chief minister’s ongoing “Safe Jail” reform policy.
According to the notification, the Home Department has directed all jails across the province to implement improved arrangements ensuring a dignified and respectful environment for visitors, including the families of inmates.
The SOPs include designated and marked parking areas near jail premises, secure parking for vehicles and motorcycles and free shuttle service from parking areas to the jail’s main gate where necessary.
Clean and comfortable waiting areas with adequate seating, proper flooring, ventilation and separate washrooms for male and female visitors have been made mandatory.
The washrooms will be equipped with water, soap, hand sanitizers, lighting, ventilation and functional locks.
The waiting areas are to be fitted with air coolers during summer and LED screens displaying informative documentaries and videos related to jail reforms and public awareness.
A proper sound system will also be installed to guide visitors through a queue management system, ensuring orderly and respectful announcements.
Special arrangements will be made for senior citizens, women and persons with disabilities, including separate seating areas.
Children visiting inmates will be provided free biscuits and candies, while visitors aged 70 and above will be given priority.
Trained support staff will be deployed in all waiting areas under the supervision of the assistant jail superintendent to assist and guide visitors through the meeting process.
The Home Department has also ordered that inmate belongings brought by families be delivered promptly using individual labeled baskets.
Furthermore, a WhatsApp number for complaints related to visitation will be prominently displayed in all waiting areas, allowing visitors to directly report issues to the home department and the office of the Inspector General (IG) Prisons.
The Home Department spokesperson said that jail superintendents will be held responsible for strict implementation of these SOPs.
Monitoring teams from the department and directorate will conduct regular inspections. Non-compliance will lead to disciplinary action against the superintendent and deputy superintendent (Executive) of the concerned jail, added spokesperson.

Punjab police on high alert amid flood threat

LAHORE, Jul 22 (APP):Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar on Tuesday directed police teams to remain on high alert in view of possible flooding in several districts of the province.
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, the IGP instructed regional and district police officers to personally monitor relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas.
He emphasized the need for close coordination between police, district administrations and rescue agencies. Regular patrolling was being carried out by police teams in villages and settlements located near rivers, the statement said.
Dr Usman added that relief camps had been established in affected areas and that measures were in place to provide assistance and ensure the security of displaced persons.
He said the protection of lives, property and infrastructure in flood-prone areas was a top priority. Food, medicines, and other essential supplies were being delivered to flood victims, while police control centres were monitoring the situation around the clock in coordination with relevant departments.

Five children, two brothers killed in rain-related incidents

SWAT, Jul 22 (APP):At least five children and two young brothers lost their lives in two tragic rain-related incidents here, according to Rescue 1122.
The first incident occurred in the Gujar Band Shanko area of Madyan, where the roof of a house collapsed due to heavy rainfall, thus burying three children alive. A woman also sustained injuries in the incident; however, she was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In a separate heartbreaking incident in Sore Dherai, Malam Jabba, two young brothers were swept away by a rain-fed stream.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies from the water and handed them over to the family.
Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels in rain-fed streams and the Swat River have significantly increased, posing serious risks to residents in low-lying areas.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions and avoid going near rivers and vulnerable structures during the monsoon season.

Pakistani team to compete in World Taekwondo Championship

PESHAWAR, Jul 22 (APP):The Pakistan Global Taekwondo Team departed for Dubai participate in World Global Taekwondo Championship scheduled to begin today (Tuesday), said a press release issued here.
 This prestigious international event is being hosted by the International Global Taekwondo Federation, drawing participation from male and female athletes across the globe.
The national squad is composed of talented, energetic, and dedicated young athletes who have undergone rigorous training under the supervision of professional coaches and the team management.

Leading the team is Masood Afridi, Secretary General of the Pakistan Global Taekwondo Federation and a renowned athlete himself. NDMA advisory warns of landslide threat across Northern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jul 22 (APP):The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the NDMA has issued a landslide alert for northern regions of the country, citing projected monsoon rains and potential slope destabilization across vulnerable areas.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advisory, all provincial disaster management authorities, rescue teams, and humanitarian partners have been instructed to mobilize emergency resources and ensure standby readiness across vulnerable areas. Authorities have been placed on high alert for swift deployment in case of slope failure or any weather-induced incident.
Residents and travelers in northern regions have been urged to avoid steep or unstable slopes and remain vigilant. Citizens are also advised to follow official instructions and download the Pakistan NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time updates and safety guidance.
Based on meteorological projections cited by NDMA, isolated rainfall is expected across various valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, including Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamir, Ghanche, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Haveli, Bagh, and Poonch. Widespread heavy rainfall is also forecast in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, and surrounding mountainous zones.
The advisory further highlights specific high-risk points vulnerable to landslides, mudslides, rockfalls, and ground subsidence. Notable locations include Kolai Palas (RD 180), Lower and Upper Kohistan (RD 200–240), Tatta Pani (RD 360), Jaglot (RD 480), Nagar (RD 460–480), Hunza (RD 520–540), Rondu, Skardu at JSR, and multiple sites in Chitral.

Bike snatched from student at gunpoint

MUZAFFARGARH, Jul 22 (APP):Two unidentified robbers snatched a motorcycle from a student at gunpoint near the children’s park in Keror Lal Esan,here on Tuesday.
According to a spokesperson,the victim,Tayyab Ali,r/o Layyah, was returning home to Basti Sargani along with a fellow student after attending his academy when the robbers intercepted him and took away his Honda 125 motorcycle.
Police have registered a case and launched a search operation to trace the culprits.

ITP urges safe driving as heavy rains hit capital

ISLAMABAD, Jul 22 (APP):Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) on Tuesday urged citizens to adopt safe driving practices amid ongoing heavy monsoon rains, issuing a citywide advisory supported by real-time assistance, rapid response units, and continuous road monitoring.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Captain (R) Syed Zeeshan Haider told APP that traffic officers had been actively deployed across the city to facilitate citizens and maintain traffic flow during the downpour. He said the officers were working diligently to ensure uninterrupted vehicular movement despite challenging weather conditions.
He advised motorists to reduce their speed, increase braking distance, and maintain a safe gap between vehicles to prevent accidents. “Avoid unnecessary travel in areas where water has accumulated on roads,” he added.
He urged drivers to keep headlights on, ensure wipers are functional, and keep the front windshield clean to maintain visibility during rain and fog. “Caution, patience, and safety are the keys to safe driving in such conditions,” the CTO Zeeshan emphasized.
Motorcyclists, he said, should wear helmets and raincoats during the rain for their safety. He further requested citizens to avoid parking on roadsides and instead use designated parking areas to prevent disruptions.
“In case of emergencies or vehicle breakdowns, citizens may call the ITP Helpline at 1915 for assistance,” he said, adding that ITP’s “Mechanic & Wakeel” teams were stationed on major roads to provide immediate roadside support.
He also encouraged the public to stay informed about traffic updates by following ITP’s official social media platforms.

Landslides cut off Gilgit road in Naran Valley, tourists rescued in overnight operation

MANSEHRA, Jul 22 (APP):Heavy landslides struck the Jalkhad and Basar areas of Naran Valley late last night, resulting in the complete blockage of the Gilgit Highway.
In response, the District Administration of Mansehra promptly launched an emergency rescue and relief operation.
The coordinated operation involved the Tehsil Administration, revenue staff, district police, National Highway Authority (NHA), Kaghan Development Authority (KDA), Rescue 1122, various government departments, and members of the local community.
During the operation, several stranded tourists were successfully rescued along with their vehicles. Food packages were also distributed among the affected tourists with special support from the Pakistan Army. Authorities managed to create alternative routes to restore traffic flow.
Through the collective efforts of all departments, tourists trapped due to the landslides were safely evacuated during the night via the MNJ Road. Meanwhile, the removal of remaining debris and boulders continues.
The District Administration Mansehra has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and service of residents and visitors in the region.
