WB acknowledges Ahsan Iqbal’s role in strengthening Pakistan’s economy

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 25 (APP):World Bank (WB) Vice President for Middle East and North Africa Ousmane Dione on Friday held a meeting with Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal.
The WB Vice President appreciated the minister’s valuable contributions towards improving Pakistan’s economy, a news release said.
During the meeting, Ahsan Iqbal stressed the need to further strengthen collaboration between the World Bank and the Ministry of Planning.
He said the partnership previously established between the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives and the World Bank needed to be revitalized to address current economic challenges.
Sharing his vision on economic development, the minister highlighted the shift in the global economic landscape.
He said the world was transitioning from an industrial-based economy to a technology-driven one.
He stressed the importance of adopting an export-led development model as a strategic imperative for Pakistan’s economic progress. “Our target is to take exports from $32 billion to $100 billion,” he said, adding that investor confidence had returned, as evidenced by the Pakistan Stock Exchange surpassing 130,000 points.
The minister informed the WB delegation that Pakistan’s key social indicators were improving due to difficult but necessary policy decisions taken to curb inflation.
He also pointed to the increasing rate of students pursuing higher education and commended the significant role of women in contributing to national development.
Besides, Ahsan Iqbal expressed concern over child stunting, calling it a serious national issue and assuring that the government was undertaking concrete steps to combat it.
During the minister, the minister drew attention to the pressing issue of climate change, urging the World Bank to play a more robust role in mitigating its adverse effects, particularly in developing nations.
Referring to the devastating 2022 floods, he highlighted the disproportionate impact on Pakistan’s underdeveloped regions and stressed the need for stronger climate resilience strategies.
The minister also raised concerns over regional water security, asserting that the international community must ensure India’s compliance with the Indus Waters Treaty. “Weaponizing water is a dangerous trend for global peace,” he warned.
He added that violations of such agreements could potentially trigger a global food and water crisis, emphasizing that water scarcity was a shared global challenge, not just a regional one.
Ahsan Iqbal briefed the WB Vice President on the Ministry’s “5Es” framework — a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing Pakistan’s economy through emphasis on exports, equity, empowerment, environment, and energy.
He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable development and expressed hope for continued and enhanced support from the World Bank in achieving national development goals.

Across China: Traditional ethnic crafts find new life via modern twists

0

HOHHOT, July 25 (Xinhua/APP): Located on the main street of China’s only Russian ethnic township, Enhe, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Wang Xiufen’s cafe exudes a warm, woody aroma. The scent of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the earthy smell of wood, drifting from a weathered log cabin — a traditional Russian-style house.

Step inside, and the eye is drawn to vibrant textiles: handwoven tapestries, colorful crocheted wall hangings, and intricate woolen ornaments, all crafted by Wang herself. For Wang, an inheritor of Russian ethnic textile craftsmanship, this cafe is more than a business. It’s a window for showcasing her ethnic traditions.

“Weaving was once passed down through generations in my family, but young people weren’t interested,” Wang said. “Now, they come for coffee, snap photos of these decorations, which are perfect for sharing on social media, and suddenly, they want to know more and even learn.”

Across the diverse ethnic communities in Inner Mongolia, many traditional craft inheritors are wrapping their cherished culture in new contexts to make heritage feel not like a relic, but a living, breathing part of the present.

A short walk away in Enhe, another custodian of tradition is reimagining her craft. Fu Yanmei has spent over 20 years making lieba, a Chinese transliteration of the Russian word for bread, and her bakery, once a quiet local staple, now buzzes with activity. Years ago, she launched a DIY lieba program, inviting visitors to shape the dough themselves.

But Fu doesn’t just let them bake — she tells them about lieba’s history and how it’s made with natural sourdough, no additives. Young tourists, she noted, make up most of the participants. “Tasting their own baked lieba is a joy they remember.”

Further east, in Oroqen Autonomous Banner near the Greater Khingan Mountains, the Oroqen people, one of China’s smallest ethnic groups, are also breathing new life into their heritage.

In the old days, they crafted canoes, cradles, baskets, and other tools and vessels from birch bark, prized for its waterproof and durable qualities. Today, at the Oroqen intangible cultural heritage museum, Meng Shuling, a master of birch bark craftsmanship, showcases these traditional items and her modern reinventions.

Her workshop showcases delicate birch bark earrings, glossy fridge magnets, and tiny cradle-shaped pendants, all pieces that marry the material’s natural texture with contemporary tastes.

“The old ways can’t stay locked in the past,” Meng said, running a finger over a birch bark jewelry box.

Beyond these grassroots efforts, institutional support is also fueling the revival of traditional crafts. Since 2023, Inner Mongolia’s institute of culture and tourism development, in collaboration with several universities, has launched a program to revitalize intangible cultural heritage by harnessing the creativity of the younger generation.

This initiative encourages students to draw inspiration from intangible heritage elements to create digital illustrations, IP characters, and fashion designs. To date, it has yielded more than 300 pieces of intangible heritage-themed cultural and creative design drafts and handicrafts.

“Young people want things they can wear, display and cherish daily. That’s how we keep the skill alive,” Meng said.

Engro Fertilizers, Bank Alfalah to launch Rs. 250 mln financing for farmers

0
ISLAMABAD, Jul 25 (APP):Engro Fertilisers, a major fertiliser company in Pakistan, and Bank Alfalah Limited, Pakistan’s leading commercial bank, announced a strategic partnership aimed at empowering farmers across the country through enhanced lending facilities.
This collaboration will extend the financing up to Rs. 1 million to farmers registered through Engro Markaz outlets and UgAi – the first integrated agricultural e-commerce platform for Pakistan, said a news release.
The signing ceremony took place at Bank Alfalah’s Head Office in Karachi and was attended by senior leadership from both organisations, including Ali Rathore, CEO of Engro Fertilisers; Atif Bajwa, President and CEO of Bank Alfalah Limited; Atif Mohammad Ali, Vice President of Marketing at Engro Fertilisers; along with other senior executives.
The pilot initiative will be launched with a total funding allocation of Rs. 250 million (comprising both secured and unsecured components), offering average loan amounts of approximately Rs. 0.6 million to 300–350 farmers. With an estimated reach of up to 2,000 beneficiaries, the program marks a critical step in forging a direct value chain between the fertiliser provider, the financing institution, and the end-user farmer, ensuring resources flow efficiently from source to soil with a robust value chain. Currently, the program will be accessible through four Engro Markaz locations across Pakistan: Sahiwal, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, and Muridke.
The project is designed to enhance financial access for farmers, providing them with clean and collateral-based lending solutions tailored to their needs. These credit facilities offer subsidised interest rates up to 4.5% lower than the market rates, enabling farmers to purchase high-quality Engro fertilizer products, directly contributing to improved crop yields, and a significant increase in their overall income and livelihood. The collaboration also features for digitization of payments and implementation of a closed loop spending solution via P2M (Person-to-Merchant) transaction enablement.
According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023–24, credit facilitation played a major role in driving improved crop yields during FY2024, leading to a significant impact of agricultural financing on national food security and rural productivity. According to the World Bank, access to agricultural finance can make farming up to four times more effective in reducing poverty highlighting the transformative impact of inclusive credit systems on rural livelihoods.
Ali Rathore, CEO of Engro Fertilisers, stated, “At Engro Fertilizers, we remain committed to supporting Pakistani farmers, who play a vital role in sustaining our country’s economy. This collaboration with Bank Alfalah is a meaningful step toward improving farmers’ access to financial resources, enabling them to invest in quality inputs, enhance productivity, and work toward a more secure future. We hope this initiative contributes to the broader goal of promoting sustainable agriculture and strengthening the resilience of farming communities”.
Atif Bajwa, President and CEO of Bank Alfalah Limited, added, “Bank Alfalah is proud to partner with Engro Fertilizers in this important initiative. We recognize the potential of Pakistan’s agricultural sector and the critical role that accessible financing plays in unlocking it. By offering tailored lending solutions, we are investing in the productivity, resilience, and financial empowerment of our farmers, contributing directly to food security and economic stability across the nation. This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to inclusive growth and supporting the backbone of Pakistan’s economy.”
Through this partnership, Engro Fertilizers and Bank Alfalah Limited are committed to bridging the gap between financial institutions and the agricultural community. This collaborative effort has been designed to enable a more inclusive, robust, and productive rural economy.
