NUML, PNRA sign MoU to strengthen academic & research collaboration

ISLAMABAD, Aug 07 (APP): The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) and the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) have entered into a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration in professional development, training, research, and academic exchange.
The signing ceremony was held at NUML’s Islamabad campus. The MoU was signed by Brigadier Shahzad Munir, Director General NUML, and Mr. Muhammad Waqas Sherani, Director General ICHR at PNRA, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Major General (R) Shahid Mahmood Kayani, HI (M), Rector NUML, along with senior officials from both institutions.
NUML, PNRA sign MoU to strengthen academic & research collaboration
Under this MoU, NUML and PNRA have agreed to collaborate in several key areas of mutual interest. Both institutions will share professional and intellectual resources to enhance academic and regulatory capacities. This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of each organisation to support institutional development and capacity-building efforts.
The MoU also emphasises cooperation in developing and refining the content of specialised training courses, ensuring that the curricula meet contemporary professional and industry standards. Furthermore, PNRA officials will be given the opportunity to enrol in a wide range of language courses offered by NUML, helping them enhance their communication skills in various international and regional languages.
In addition, the agreement facilitates PNRA’s participation in the training programs conducted by NUML’s Executive Development Centre (EDC), which are designed to strengthen leadership, management, and strategic skills. The MoU also opens up internship opportunities for NUML students at PNRA, allowing them to gain practical experience in a dynamic and high-impact regulatory environment.
On the occasion, Rector NUML emphasised the importance of academia-regulator linkages for national progress and capacity building. He stated that the partnership reflects NUML’s commitment to expanding its academic and professional horizons through meaningful collaborations.
The MoU is expected to pave the way for long-term academic enrichment, knowledge exchange, and professional growth for students, faculty members, and officials from both NUML and PNRA.

Rupee gains 12 paisa against US Dollar

ISLAMABAD, Aug 7 (APP):The Rupee on Thursday appreciated by 12 paisa against the US Dollar in the interbank trading and closed at Rs 282.55 against the previous day’s closing Rs 282.67.
However, according to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the dollar in the open market stood at Rs 284 and Rs 285, respectively.
The price of the Euro increased by Rs 3.15 to close at Rs 330.31 against the last day’s closing of Rs 327.16, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The Japanese yen gained 01 paisa and closed at Rs 1.92, whereas an increase of Rs 2.44 was witnessed in the exchange rate of the British Pound, which was traded at Rs 377.99 compared to the previous day’s closing of Rs 375.55.
The exchange rates of the Emirates Dirham and the Saudi Riyal came down by 03 and 04 paisa to close at Rs 76.92 and Rs 75.29, respectively.

Through Pakistani youth’s lenses: A portrait of Xinjiang

BEIJING, Aug 7 (APP): “Every second here felt like home. The diversity of Xinjiang, its beautiful landscapes and the spirit of harmony among different communities left a lasting impact on me,” said Anusha Baig and Abdullah Jalal, who are visiting Xinjiang among the thirteen Pakistani students from the Confucius Institute jointly established by Xinjiang Agricultural University (XJAU) and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF).

From July 28 to August 6, the students visited Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum, Xinjiang Art Museum, Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, and Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Science and Technology Museum, etc., attended lessons of Chinese language and Chinese society overview, and experienced Chinese calligraphy, Chinese tea art, Peking Opera mask making, Tai Chi, and Chinese paper-cutting. From August 7 to 10, they will continue their tour in Beijing.

“From bustling markets to peaceful mosques, every corner of Xinjiang tells a story of harmony and tradition. This trip gave me a deeper understanding of China’s ethnic diversity and development, especially how Xinjiang blends modern progress with cultural preservation,” Hamza Shabbir told CEN.

Talking about why they chose to learn Mandarin, “as an Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering student, I understand how China’s hub status in manufacturing makes this language vital,” Anusha Baig said. “With China’s growing influence in global trade, communication, and education, mastering the language is a smart investment,” Qamar Waheed said.

As a student from Gilgit-Baltistan and living near the Khunjerab Pass, Anusha Baig said she has seen how China has helped Pakistan—especially Gilgit-Baltistan—develop, which has brought true friendship between the two peoples in her mind. “I’ve witnessed the impact of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in my hometown. Many employment opportunities, better infrastructure, and roads have been created. Diamer Basha Dam is under construction, and now the dream of travelling from Gilgit to Gwadar Port and the Arabian Sea Trading Hub is becoming a reality,” she underscored.

PSX stays bullish, gains 558 more points

ISLAMABAD, Aug 7 (APP):The Pakistan Stock Exchange’s (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 Index continued with bullish trend on Thursday, gaining 558.64 more points, a positive of 0.39 percent, closing at 145,647.14 points against 145,088.50 points last trading day.
A total of 712,527,450 shares were traded during the day as compared to 788,463,721 shares the previous trading day, whereas the price of shares stood at Rs 55.677 billion against Rs 52.780 billion on the last trading day.
As many as 483 companies transacted their shares in the stock market, 221 of them recorded gains and 235 sustained losses, whereas the share price of 27 companies remained unchanged.
The three top trading companies were Pak Petroleum with 33,121,252 shares at Rs 189.74 per share, WorldCall Telecom with 25,365,424 shares at Rs1.43 per share and Fauji Foods Limited with 23,971,113 shares at Rs 16.04 per share.
Rafhan Maize Products Company Limited witnessed a maximum increase of Rs 81.85 per share price, closing at Rs 9,679.12, whereas the runner-up was Al-Abbas Sugar Mills Limited with Rs39.7 rise in its per share price to Rs 1,119.37.
PIA Holding Company LimitedB witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs1,078.10 per share closing at Rs 29,857.80 followed by Nestle Pakistan Limited with Rs530.57 decline in its share price to close at Rs9,037.58.

Lahore Zoo, Safari Park ready to welcome 12 giraffes

LAHORE, Aug 07 (APP):An ambitious initiative to bring in large exotic animals for Lahore Zoo and Safari Park has now been finalized. Following a large consignment of 12 giraffes from South Africa that will soon reach Pakistan. In this connection, talks are underway with the airline to bring the giraffes directly to Lahore.
Lahore Zoo Director Mudassar Hassan told APP that upon arrival, the giraffes would be kept in quarantine for at least 15 days and would be examined. Out of the 12 giraffes, 9 would be transferred to Safari Zoo, while 3 to Lahore Zoo.
He said the Punjab government had released funds of Rs 135 million for the project.
In 2018, three giraffes were imported from South Africa for the Lahore Zoo.
Mudassar Hassan further informed that cases of importing other large animals and elephants for the Safari Zoo were also being followed up.
It is worth mentioning here that the import of major species — besides 12 giraffes, three rhinos (one for the Zoo and a pair for the Safari), and one male hippopotamus for the Zoo — has been delayed temporarily.

Balochistan Games to be started on Aug 12 in connection with Independence Day: Dura Baloch

QUETTA, Aug 07 (APP): Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Balochistan Dura Baloch and Director General (DG) Sports Yasir Bazai on Thursday said that Balochistan Games would be started from August 12 in connection with the Independence Day celebrations, during which various sports competitions to be organized.
Addressing a meeting of the officers of the Sports Department to review the preparations for the Balochistan Games, they said that this was the second major sports event after the successful organization of the All Pakistan Chief Minister Balochistan Gold Cup Football Tournament 2025.
The Secretary said that on the special directive of the Chief Minister Balochistan and the Sports Advisor, sports were being promoted in the province to attract the youth towards healthy activities.
“The Balochistan Games will be held on August 12 at Ayub Sports Complex, Quetta”, she said and added that during the Balochistan Games, athletics, bodybuilding, karate, volleyball, boxing, badminton, cricket, football, table tennis and other sports competitions would be organized, in which young players from all over Balochistan could participate.
She said that new talent could emerge during the Balochistan Games saying that there is no dearth of talent among the youth of Balochistan and if they are provided with proper sports opportunities, they could bring glory not only to Balochistan but also to Pakistan.
She said that the Sports Department was not only striving for the promotion of sports but was also creating opportunities for the training, fitness and confidence building of the youth which would have far-reaching results.
The Secretary said that various cultural demonstrations, march pasts, music and traditional dances should also be presented in the opening ceremony, which could fully reflect the culture of Balochistan.
Balochistan Games is not only a sports event but it is an important effort for the development of youth, promotion of peace and creation of a healthy society, she mentioned.

CNS meets top military leadership of Azerbaijan

ISLAMABAD, Aug 07 (APP): Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Naveed Ashraf called on military and naval leadership of Azerbaijan during an official visit to Azerbaijan.
Upon arrival at Naval Forces Headquarters, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf was presented Guard of Honour, said a news release issued by Directorate General Public Relations (Pak Navy) here Thursday.

The CNS called on Commander of Azerbaijan Naval Forces, First Grade Captain Shahin Mammadov. The dignitaries exchanged views on bilateral naval collaboration and regional maritime security.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf underscored the importance of enhancing the interaction between naval forces through exercises and training exchange programmes.
The CNS was given a detailed briefing on Azerbaijan Navy’s operational readiness, training, education programmes and ongoing activities. Admiral Naveed Ashraf also visited Navy’s Special Operations Forces unit and witnessed operational demonstration of Azerbaijan Naval Forces.
During the visit, the Naval Chief called on Chief of the General Staff of Azerbaijan Army, Colonel General Karim Valiyev. During the meeting matters of mutual interests and enhancing bilateral defence cooperations were discussed.
To pay tribute to the Martyrs, Admiral Naveed Ashraf visited Alley of Martyrs and laid wreaths.

Rangers, Police arrest street crime suspect in joint operation

KARACHI, Aug 07 (APP):Pakistan Rangers Sindh and Karachi Police, continuing their crackdown on street crime, arrested a suspect involved in multiple robberies during a joint operation in Gulistan Society, Quaidabad, Bin Qasim Town.
According to a spokesperson for the Rangers on Thursday, the suspect has been identified as Junaid Shahrukh alias Mandha. He was taken into custody based on intelligence reports. A 30-bore unlicensed pistol was also recovered from his possession.
Investigations revealed that the accused was involved in several street crimes and robberies across different areas of Karachi, including Landhi. During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement, along with an accomplice, in a robbery that took place on July 26, this year, in Landhi No. 2. The accused could be easily identified in the CCTV footage of the incident.
The arrested suspect, along with the recovered weapon, has been handed over to police for further legal proceedings.
