Poverty and early deaths await millions of world’s most disadvantaged children – UNICEF

0

UNITED NATIONS, June 28 (APP): Some 69 million children under five
years of age will die from mostly preventable causes, 167 million
children will live in poverty, and 750 million women will have been
married as children by 2030, unless the world focuses more on the plight of its most disadvantaged children, according to a United Nations report published Tuesday.

“Denying hundreds of millions of children a fair chance in life does more than threaten their futures by fueling intergenerational cycles
of disadvantage, it imperils the future of their societies,” the
Executive Director of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Anthony Lake, said on the release of The State of the World’s Children, the agency’s annual flagship report.

“We have a choice: Invest in these children now or allow our world
to become still more unequal and divided,” he added.

The report notes that significant progress has been made in saving children’s lives, getting children into school and lifting people out
of poverty. Global under-five mortality rates have been more than halved since 1990, boys and girls attend primary school in equal numbers in 129 countries, and the number of people living in extreme poverty worldwide is almost half what it was in the 1990s.

But this progress has been neither even nor fair, the report flags.

The poorest children are twice as likely to die before their fifth
birthday and to be chronically malnourished than the richest.

Across much of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, children born to mothers with no education are almost three times more likely to die
before they are five than those born to mothers with a secondary
education. And girls from the poorest households are twice as likely to marry as children than girls from the wealthiest households.

Nowhere is the outlook grimmer than in sub-Saharan Africa, where at least 247 million children or two in three live in multidimensional poverty, deprived of what they need to survive and develop, and where
nearly 60 per cent of 20 to 24 year-olds from the poorest fifth of the population have had less than four years of schooling. At current trends, the report projects, by 2030, sub-Saharan Africa will account for:
Nearly half of the 69 million children who will die before their fifth birthday from mostly preventable causes; More than half of the 60 million children of primary school age who will still be out of school;
and 9 out of 10 children living in extreme poverty.

The UNICEF report goes on to note that although education plays a
unique role in levelling the playing field for children, the number of children who do not attend school has increased since 2011, and a significant proportion of those who do go to school are not learning.

About 124 million children today do not go to primary- and lower-secondary school, and almost two in five who do finish primary
school have not learned how to read, write or do simple arithmetic.

The report points to evidence that investing in the most vulnerable children can yield immediate and long-term benefits. Cash transfers,
for example, have been shown to help children stay in school longer and advance to higher levels of education.

On average, each additional year of education a child receives
increases his or her adult earnings by about 10 per cent. And for each additional year of schooling completed, on average, by young adults in a country, that country’s poverty rates fall by nine per cent.

Inequity is neither inevitable, nor insurmountable, the report notes, pointing out that better data on the most vulnerable children, integrated solutions to the challenges children face, innovative ways to address old problems, more equitable investment and increased involvement by communities are all measures which can help level the playing field for children.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted last year by 193
UN Member States, aims by 2030 to eradicate poverty and ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning
opportunities for all, among other objectives.

PML-N will win AJK elections; ensure good governance

ISLAMABAD, Jun 28 (APP): Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Dr Asif Kirmani on Tuesday said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would win Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) general election with thumping majority and ensure good governance and a corruption-free government.

After wining elections in AJK, PML-N government would bring a revolution in all sectors of the region including infrastructure, health, education and tourism, as envisioned by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, he said talking to the PTV.

Incumbent Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government in AJK had
failed to deliver and there is sense of deprivation among people. Our government will ensure uplift of masses and end their deprivation, he added.

He said the federal government had released funds worth billions of rupees to AJK government but no development work was done
by the corrupt and incompetent government.

“Hospitals in AJK lack medicines and proper health facilities while schools are without proper infrastructure and buildings without roofs. This situation speaks volumes of the incapability of the PPP government,” he said.

He said road infrastructure in AJK is also in dilapidated condition as the incumbent government had not paid any attention towards it.

It is part of PML-N agenda to make AJK a tourist resort with best facilities to attract local as well as foreign tourists as the area carry huge potential in this sector, he added.

Asif Kirmani said when we pointed out to AJK government’s corruption, embezzlement and incapability, it started alleging PML-N of interference in its affairs.

“If we had been fond of power, we could have established our government in AJK by dethroning the present government through vote of no confidence,” he added.

“We also had a chance to form our governments in KPK and Balochistan after general elections 2013 but Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif gave chances to other parties.

He said the opportunist who always followed politics of power, would be rejected by the people of AJK on July 21.

PML-N would contest elections in AJK and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Party would be its ally while in some constituencies there would be seat adjustment with Jamat-i-Islami (JI), he said.

To question, he said workers of PML-N had given their opinion against any alliance with Muslim Conference (MC) as they think the party had not delivered when it was in power.

He said response of AJK people to PML-N is overwhelming as manifested during the public meetings. They are looking for a
real change in upcoming general election and PML-N is in strong
position for this change.

PML-N has promised to provide air-ambulances to AJK people to help
travel the patients for immediate medical facilities, he added.

He said it is also included in our agenda to construct state of the art hospitals equipped with latest facilities at every district in AJK.

Kirmani alleged that Prime Minister AJK Abdul Majeed was influencing administration including Police and local officials to win elections which was unlawful.

He asked the local administration to remain impartial during the elections and perform their duties with neutrality as state’s employees.

We are in favour, if general election is held under supervision of Pakistan Army to impartiality and transparency, he said.

He also asked Chief Election Commissioner, IG and other officials of AJK to take steps for peaceful environment during elections. PML-N fully supports freedom struggle of the Kashmiri people for their right to self determination.

He said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has raised Kashmir issue on all international fora.

India needs to develop coherence on peace process with Pakistan: Masood Khan

0

ISLAMABAD, Jun 28 (APP): If India is serious in peace with Pakistan, it can initiate the dialogue process right away, as a democratically elected government is in place in Pakistan capable of taking all decisions, former ambassador Masood Khan said Tuesday.

The diplomat’s statement came in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who in an interview with local television said that it was hard to decide to whom to talk about peace in Islamabad – whether to the democratically elected government or the ‘other actors’.

“Mr. Modi knows that Pakistan’s Prime Minister is one call away. If he gets in touch with him, the dialogue process can start right away. He need not look for other ‘actors’,” Masood Khan told APP.

Masood Khan, who has served as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the Untied Nations said India’s interlocutors in Islamabad are well known – Advisor on Foreign Affairs and National Security Advisor.

“For peace, engagement is necessary and the political leadership’s brief includes inputs from all ‘actors’ – by which he alludes to the armed forces of Pakistan,” he said.

“Pakistan has one brief, not a split one. India, for its part, should try to develop a coherent and cohesive response on India-Pakistan agenda,” the diplomat said.

Banks asked to furnish proposals for transactions with Iran

0

ISLAMABAD, June 28 (APP): Minister for Commerce, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan Tuesday directed the representatives of banks to furnish viable proposals for the facilitation of banking transactions for trade with Iran within a month.

The Minister was chairing a meeting with State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and private banks for exploring the banking channels available for trade with post-sanction Iran.

The Minister said that Pakistan is searching for ways and means to initiate trade with Iran in a big way despite the fact that several impediments persists after the lifting of sanctions from Iran.

The meeting was informed that despite lifting international sanctions from Iran, private banks are reluctant to establish direct banking channels with Iran.

The absence of banking links, because of the refusal of international banks to support transactions with Iran, is the prime reason that Pakistan’s trade with Iran did not boost up as expected.

Representatives of Pakistani private banks visited Iran few months ago and report a great enthusiasm in Iran regarding trade with Pakistan.

SBP and Central Bank of Iran signed a Letter of Intent on the occasion of visit of Iranian President to Pakistan for enhancing mutual cooperation and establishing direct banking links.

Pakistani traders would have great opportunities of export right next door with minimal transportation cost, especially that of Basmati rice which used to fetch millions of dollars from the pre-sanction Iran.

Pak-Iran trade which was over one billion dollars now stands at US $ 270 million because of the international sanctions.

Ministry of Commerce is extensively engaged with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Agriculture of Iran to operationalize the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and enhance trade facilitation at the border.

The Minister recently visited Pak-Iran border at Taftan and inspected the facilities available for smooth movement of vehicles trading across the border and promised to upgrade the infrastructure.

As per the 5-Years Economic Engagement Plan agreed between Pakistan and Iran, the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan has forwarded the draft FTA framework agreement to Iran this month. The response of Iran is awaited on this.
