Global food prices rose in June; wheat harvest outlook robust UN agency

New Syria peace talks could resume in late August: UN

UNITED NATIONS, July 7 (APP): Global food commodity prices rose 4.2 per
cent in June, their steepest monthly increase of the past four years, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Thursday, also noting improved production prospects for the year ahead.
The FAO Food Price Index a trade-weighted index tracking international
market prices for the cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar commodity groups averaged 163.4 points in June and is now one per cent below the level reached a year earlier.
The June rise, which affected all commodity categories except vegetable
oils, was the fifth consecutive monthly increase. The price movement reflects FAO’s updating of its cereal supply and demand forecasts for the 2016/17 marketing season.
Sugar prices rose 14.8 per cent from May, as Brazil – the world’s
largest sugar producer and exporter endured heavy rains that hindered harvesting and dented yields.
Cereal prices rose 2.9 per cent in the month and are now 3.9 per cent
below their June 2015 level. The increase was driven by maize prices, primarily due to tightening spot export supplies from Brazil. Ample wheat supplies and reports of record yields in the United States held down wheat prices, FAO said.
Dairy prices rose 7.8 per cent from May, spurred by an uncertain outlook
in Oceania and slower production growth in the European Union (EU). Nonetheless, the index remained 14 per cent below its level of a year ago, according to the agency.
Meat prices rose 2.4 per cent from the revised May value, as average
quotations for pork, beef and poultry all rose for the third consecutive month, while vegetable oil prices declined 0.8 per cent from May.
FAO’s Cereal Supply and Demand Brief, also released Thursday, pointed to
improved production prospects, primarily for wheat.
Global wheat production is now pegged at 732 million tonnes, more than
one per cent higher than anticipated in June, mainly due to improved prospects in the EU, the Russian Federation and the United States, as a result of better weather conditions.
The forecast for world maize production in 2016 was, however, cut down,
as prospects for the second crop in Brazil have dimmed and as reduced government support in China led to lower planting. Overall, coarse grain production for this year is now expected to be 1,316.4 million tonnes, some 0.6 per cent lower than last month’s forecast, FAO said.
World total cereal utilization in the 2016/17 marketing year, meanwhile,
is now projected at 2,555.6 million tonnes, 1.3 per cent higher than the estimate for 2015/16.
As a result, global cereal stocks by the end of the farming season in
2017 are expected to stand at 635 million tonnes, 1.5 per cent below their opening level. The resulting world stocks-to-use ratio for cereals would stand at 24.2 per cent in 2016/17, compared with the 2007/08 historical low of 20.5 per cent, the agency noted.

WASHINGTON, July 7 (APP): US President Barack Obama on Wednesday assured the Muslim Americans on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr that they should never feel afraid or unsafe in their place of worship, saying they were part of the American family since the birth of the country.

Greeting Muslim Americans and those around the world on the auspicious occasion, President Obama said that there had been rise in attacks against Muslim Americans but said they should never feel afraid.

“In the face of hate, it’s our American values and strength that bring
us together to stand in solidarity and protect one another thereby, making our Nation stronger and safer,” he said in his Eid message.

He said the celebrations on Eid remind us of our proud history as a
nation built by people of all backgrounds; our history of religious freedom and civil liberties, and our history of innovation and strength. “These legacies would not be possible without the contributions of Muslim Americans that make our country even stronger.”

Referring to the recent terrorist attacks in several countries during
the holy month of Ramzan, including Madina Munawara, he expressed his grief over the senseless violence that claimed lives of innocent people.

He reminded that Muslim Americans have been part of our American family since its founding. “This Eid, we recommit to protecting Muslim Americans against bigotry and xenophobia, while celebrating the contributions of Muslim Americans around the country, including one of our finest, the People’s Champion Muhammad Ali, to whom we bade farewell this Ramadan.”

He said, later this month, he and the First Lay will host an Eid
celebration at the White House and they looked forward to welcoming Americans from around the country to celebrate the holiday.

Muslims celebrate Eid across US on same day, condemns terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON, July 6 (APP) : Muslims across the United States celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr across the United States on Wednesday with traditional fervour and zeal, one of the few times when the Muslim holy festival is observed  on the same day in the country.

Eid prayers were held in mosques in Virginia, Maryland, DC
Metropolitan Area and in other states. In Virginia, Dar-ul Huda, the
oldest Islamic center in the state, arranged five Eid prayers in
Waterford area to enable all worshipers to offer prayers according to
their work schedule.

In their sermons, Imams strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia and said that attacks on the holy city of Madina tantamount  to attack on entire Muslim Umma.

A large number of Pakistani Americans offered prayers at the Dar-ul-Huda. Special prayers were offered for the peace in the United
States and around the world, especially their motherland Pakistan.

“Shukrana” prayers were also offered for the fast recovery of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from an open heart surgery performed in London
early last month. In sermons, prayer leaders highlighted the fact that
Islam is a religion of peace and does not allow violence of any kind. It
was emphasized that those terrorists who were killing in the name of religion were not Muslims.

Meanwhile, a spokesman of the US State Department, John Kirby,
condemned the attacks in Jeddah, Qatif, and Medina which marred the final days of Ramazan and brought sorrow to so many innocent families.

“We stand — as we have stood — with the people of Saudi Arabia as
they confront the scourge of terrorism. These attacks underscore the
scope of the threat we all face, and remind us of the need to continue
to stay focused on combating violent extremism and bringing those responsible for it to justice,” the spokesman said in a statement.

ADAMS Islamic Center, representing a large group of Muslim community, also expressed deep sorrow over the horrific attacks in Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Iraq, Malaysia and Indonesia.

“We are especially devastated by knowing these attacks took place in
the holiest of months for all Muslims, and in direct contravention to
the spirit and good will of the sacred month of Ramazan at the sacred
city for all Muslims, Medina,” ADAMS said in a statement.

“The attack in Medina was undoubtedly an assault on Islam itself and
an atrocious assault on the world’s Muslims, many of whom come from all corners of the world to the sacred city.”

The group reaffirmed that the terrorists around the world were
traitors of Islam and their activities had been outside the fold of
Islam, which was exemplified by their attack against the Prophet
Muhammad’s (P.B.U.H) Mosque in Medina, Saudia Arabia.

ISLAMABAD, July 5 (APP): Felicitating the nation on the auspicious occasion of Eidul Fitr, President Mamnoon Hussain has prayed for the well-being and prosperity of the country, masses and Islam.

“The day of Eid is not a mere festival, but it is like a symbol that relates to tolerance, fortitude, peace and serenity, mutual harmony and peaceful coexistence,” the President said in his message on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

He said the objective of exhibiting self-control by the Muslims during Ramazan-ul-Mubarik and learning good attitudes during this holy month was that they make these acts part of their lives and become the source of promoting peace and security and love and affection in society, country and ultimately the whole world.

“In the present circumstances, the message of Ramazan- ul-Mubarik’s training and the holy festival of Eid has become more important, so that the pleasures can be returned back to the world, faced with the critical problems caused by terrorism and injustice. This is what our religion teaches,” the President remarked.

He said,”The day of Eid also teaches us to involve the  under-privileged segments of society in our delights on this auspicious occasion; and bring them at par by fulfilling their needs so that ground is made for the elimination of social inequalities, because our objective is to build a society, which is free of all kinds of inequity, and its people lead a
prosperous life.”

The President also called upon the masses to involve, in their Eid joys, the people facing law and order situation in various parts of country, law enforcing personnel and the displaced people.

“We have to distribute our Zakat and Fitra in a way that these can reach the deserving people,” he added.

The President said, “I pray to Allah Almighty to make our dear country the cradle of peace and progress and continue to bless us with His bounties. Ameen!”

I on my own behalf and on behalf of the countrymen attribute all the Eid delights to them,” the Prime Minister said in his message on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

The Prime Minister felicitated the Islamic world in general and the nation in particular on the happy occasion of Eidul Fitr.

“These are the blessings of Allah Almighty, Who provided us with an opportunity to benefit from the bounties and advantages of Ramazan-ul-Mubarik. May Allah accept our reverences during the holy month, bless us with His benevolence and forgiveness, and save us from the blaze of hell,” he added.

The Prime Minister said,”We, today, on this auspicious occasion, pledge not to become part of any kind of negative activity and will continue to work for the progress and prosperity of the country and nation.”

“We should also pledge that we will promote among us the teachings of tolerance, harmony, forgiveness, love and affection, patience and generosity. It is only possible when we lead a life based on the golden principles of Islam and control the negative attitudes of jealousy and hatred. This is the right path, by following which we can achieve success in this world and hereafter,” he maintained.

The Prime Minister said,”The enemies of Pakistan are aware of the fact that our real power lies in our civilization and culture. We love each other and are capable of being united in every hour of trial.

We can be above board of political and religious differences. On the occasion of Eid, we have to demonstrate it practically.”

“I hope that you will meet you relatives, neighbours and others living around you by keeping aside the political and religious divides and will make this Eid occasion the day of national unity. May the blessings of Allah Almighty are with you,” he concluded.
