Brazilian president calls for strengthening domestic market to boost economic growth

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 4 (Xinhua/APP): Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday called for strengthening the domestic market as a key strategy to accelerate the country’s economic growth.

Increasing people’s purchasing power and promoting the circulation of income among households are essential to reviving Brazil’s economy, the president said while visiting an electric vehicle manufacturing center in the northeastern state of Ceara.

A more balanced distribution of income directly boosts the domestic market and strengthens demand for industrial goods, he stressed.

He also urged prioritizing manufacturing for domestic consumers, saying, “Brazil has a very large internal market, and what we need is to produce cars to sell to the Brazilian people.”

The president highlighted policies introduced under his administration to ease household budgets, including income-tax exemptions for those earning up to 5,000 reais (about 900 U.S. dollars) per month, various local energy assistance initiatives and other measures to stimulate basic consumption.

The government seeks to drive sustained growth by combining industrial expansion, technological modernization and increased domestic consumption, aiming to reposition Brazil on the world stage, he said.

US focusing on Afghans for deportation after last week’s Washington shooting: NYT

0

NEW YORK, Dec 04 (APP): The Trump administration is sharpening its focus on deporting Afghan nationals who were previously ordered to leave the United States, following last week’s shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington, according to documents seen by The New York Times.

“It has become vital to review the population of Afghanistan citizens,” the newspaper cited an unnamed official at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) having emailed this message to agency field offices on Nov. 29.

The email said ICE agents had been tasked with “locating and apprehending” more than 1,860 Afghans across the country who had been given final deportation orders by an immigration judge but who were not currently in detention.

Those instructions were transmitted to ICE field offices this week, and federal agents were told to track down and arrest Afghan nationals,

In addition, officials at ICE and U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services have been working to ensure that Afghans admitted into the United States were “properly vetted,” the documents stated.

The Times said that the move was part of President Donald Trump’s response to a shooting last week that killed one National Guard member and left another in critical condition. The man accused of the shooting is an Afghan refugee named Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who served in a C.I.A.-backed paramilitary unit in Afghanistan.

Lakanwal, who is said to have suffered from mental health issues after his combat experience, was one of the more than 190,000 Afghans resettled in the United States since 2021 through programmes created by the Biden administration to assist U.S. allies fleeing the Taliban takeover.

Since the shooting, Trump has intensified his aggressive anti-migrant stance and accused his predecessor of failing to adequately screen those who arrived in the country through the programmes, it was pointed out.

Lakanwal came to the United States in September 2021 through a programme called Operation Allies Welcome. He was granted asylum in April, during the Trump administration.

Biden administration officials have said that the Afghan nationals who arrived through Operation Allies Welcome were properly vetted and screened. Republicans have pointed to an inspector general report that later found significant flaws in the process.

In recent days, the Trump administration has halted all asylum requests and stopped issuing visas to people from Afghanistan; begun a review of all asylum cases that were approved under the Biden administration; and said it would re-examine green cards issued to people from 19 countries.

Together, the decisions could radically reshape American immigration policy, curtailing the ability of migrants to legally enter and live in the United States, according to the Times.

In response to a request for comment on the Afghan deportation effort, Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement that “the protection and safety of Americans and our homeland will remain our singular focus and mission.”

Ms. McLaughlin said the vetting of Afghan nationals was “tough and complex,” claiming that “many hate our country and seek to bring it harm.”

Many Afghans served as critical allies of American forces after the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001, the report pointed out

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Dec 3 (APP): The non-profit sector in Saudi Arabia has expanded by 370 percent, with the number of organizations rising from 1,700 in 2017 to more than 7,000 in 2025, a Saudi Minister said on Wednesday.

Saudi Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and Chairman of the Board of the National Center for the Non-Profit Sector (NCNP), Ahmed bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi expressed these views as he inaugurated the International Non-Profit Sector Forum, organized by the NCNP in Riyadh from 3 to 5 December 2025.

The forum opened with strong participation, bringing together more than 2,000 attendees, including leaders, policymakers, experts, specialists and stakeholders from inside and outside Saudi Arabia, along with 100 speakers from 20 countries.

Minister Al-Rajhi pointed to the sector’s long history in the nation, which goes back nearly a century to the first official regulation on charitable donations issued in 1928 during the reign of the founding King Abdulaziz.

He noted that Saudi Vision 2030 had been a major catalyst for change in the sector, particularly through the establishment of the NCNP as a unified regulatory body and a key driver of better governance, greater transparency, stronger organizational empowerment and improved effectiveness.

Al-Rajhi highlighted a number of notable achievements in recent years, including an increase in the share of specialized organizations aligned with national development priorities to more than 92 percent, and the sector’s contribution to GDP reaching around 1.2 percent, with a target of 5 percent by 2030.

He added that employment in the non-profit sector had grown to 140,000 people, up from 19,000 in 2017, while the efficiency of developmental spending had exceeded 75 percent. Volunteerism has also seen a major surge, with the number of volunteers reaching 1.5 million in 2025 and the number of annual volunteering opportunities surpassing 500,000, while beneficiary satisfaction with the sector’s services has climbed above 89 percent.

At the close of his address, Al-Rajhi thanked the Saudi leadership for its strong support of the non-profit sector, stressing that the forum will help to enhance its impact locally and internationally and to build high-quality partnerships that advance sustainable development.

The International Non-Profit Sector Forum is built around four main themes and features 30 panel discussions, more than 15 workshops, and a platform for launching initiatives and signing agreements, in addition to professional volunteering activities that see the participation of senior officials and dignitaries, all aimed at promoting a culture of volunteerism and supporting the sector’s development goals.
