According to the University spokesperson, presiding over the event as chief guest, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sindh Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Mari underscored the importance of nutrition in shaping both personal and societal progress.
Expressing his delight, he said, “It is heartening to see the Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium come alive again after three years. Its revival marks not only the reopening of a physical space but also the rekindling of intellectual and cultural engagement on campus,” he maintained.
The VC stressed that ensuring food security was vital for national stability and human development. “No nation can progress if its people go hungry,” he stated and added that food security was not just about access to food, but about ensuring that every citizen has access to healthy, affordable and sustainable nourishment.
He said that universities must lead by example, promoting awareness, research and innovation in agriculture and nutrition.
He also emphasized the need for local food resilience, encouraging young researchers to work toward sustainable agricultural practices that balance productivity with environmental responsibility.
Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Nanik Ram shed light on the broader socio-economic implications of food insecurity. “World Food Day is not merely an observance, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility,” he said and added that food insecurity affected education, health and economic productivity.

Adding an international perspective, Mr. Jullius, representing the collaborating organizations, conducted an interactive session with students, drawing their attention to this year’s World Food Day theme: “Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind.” He said that the day was a call to recognize the interconnectedness of food systems and the planet’s resources.
“Around the world and especially in Pakistan, millions face food insecurity driven by climate change, water scarcity and economic challenges. It’s time we rethink how we produce and consume food,” he said.

SLF, climate ministry to mark Int’l Snow Leopard Day with Trail 5 hike

0
ISLAMABAD, Oct 22 (APP):The Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) Pakistan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), will commemorate International Snow Leopard Day on Thursday with a symbolic 23-minute hike on Trail 5 in Islamabad to raise awareness about the conservation of the endangered big cat.
This year’s global theme — “#23for23 – 23 Minutes for Snow Leopards” — encourages people and institutions worldwide to dedicate 23 minutes of physical activity to honour the snow leopard, often referred to as the “Ghost of the Mountains.”
The event, scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., will be graced by the Minister of State for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, who will address participants before leading the hike.
Organisers told APP that the short trek symbolises resilience, balance, and humanity’s connection with nature — qualities embodied by the elusive snow leopard.
Pakistan is home to a significant population of snow leopards found across its northern mountain ranges, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. However, the species faces increasing threats from climate change, habitat degradation, and poaching.
“Through this initiative, we aim to highlight the urgent need to protect the snow leopard and its fragile mountain ecosystem,” said Faheem Akhtar, Communication Officer at the Snow Leopard Foundation.
“Community engagement and awareness are vital to ensuring that this majestic species continues to thrive in our highlands.”
The SLF, in partnership with the Ministry, has been working closely with local communities on conservation projects that promote coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Their initiatives include habitat protection, anti-poaching patrols, and livelihood programmes designed to reduce pressure on natural resources.
The International Snow Leopard Day, celebrated annually on 23 October, was established in 2013 under the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme (GSLEP) — a joint commitment by snow leopard range countries to safeguard the species and its habitats.
Members of the media, environmental activists, and citizens have been invited to participate in the hike and join the campaign.

During the event, participants collectively requested Muhammad Asim Butt to convey their appeal to the Chairperson of the Academy, Dr. Najeeba Arif. The request included a proposal to establish a dedicated section in the Academy’s library for books written in Pothohari, to ensure the systematic preservation of the language’s literary treasures. They also urged the Academy to initiate a formal award to recognize outstanding writers and poets contributing to Pothohari literature.
Notable attendees of the session included Asim Butt, Shamsa Noreen, Sharif Shad, Farzand Ali Hashmi, Fareed Zahid, Zaheer Chaudhry, Iqbal Hussain Afkaar, Saadia Batool Pirzada, Akhtar Usman, Hayat Swati, Sardar Yousafzai, Sabeen Younas, Khair-un-Nisa Khairi, Jameel Mughal, Dr. Amir Zaheer Bhatti, Atta Sheikh, Muneer Fayyaz, and Ehsan Baloch.
