ABBOTTABAD, Dec 01 (APP):The three-day blockade of Kohala Bridge by the Tehreek Awami Huqooq Circle Bakot ended late on Monday after provincial and federal representatives reached a written agreement with the organisers, restoring traffic on the main route between Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.
The sit-in had blocked the Kashmir Highway for three days, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded on both sides of the River Jhelum and disrupting the main road link between the federal capital and the Azad Kashmir capital. Meanwhile, the protesters dispersed immediately after the agreement was signed, and movement on the route resumed.
PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary General and former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi told participants in a video message that he had convened a meeting of the Tehreek’s core committee with Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam.
He added that the demands had been forwarded to the relevant federal authorities for early implementation and that he would also place the matter before the prime minister.
Furthermore, Murtaza Javed Abbasi acknowledged the determination of the protesters and assured them of his support.
Negotiations at the site were led by Abbottabad Mayor Sardar Shuja Nabi and MPA Nazir Abbasi on behalf of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, while former MPA from PMLN Sardar Fareed Ahmed Abbasi represented the federal government.
The leadership listened to the organisers’ demands and later finalised the written agreement. However, they noted that progress would depend on timely administrative steps.
While addressing the gathering, Sardar Shuja Nabi said that the provincial government would begin work on all agreed development projects within four months.
Meanwhile, he stressed that implementation would begin without unnecessary delays.
The protesters had called for the restoration and construction of important roads, including the Kohala to Tarch route, Boi Road, Bakot to Nathiagali Road and Patan Kalan to Plahair Road.
They also sought the rehabilitation of earthquake damaged roads, schools and hospitals under ERRA and PERRA, while demanding funding for educational institutions in Birote.
Their list further included the establishment of a girls secondary school in Birote Khurd under the provincial ADP, formal approval of Tehsil Bakot and the establishment of a federal hospital at Kohala.
The sit-in was organised by the Awami Huqooq Circle Bakot Action Committee and the Naujawanan Action Committee convened by Ghuzanfar Ali Abbasi and other local leadership, and it remained peaceful throughout the three day blockade.
Concluding the protest, convener Ghuzanfar Ali Abbasi thanked the officials involved in the negotiations and said that under the written agreement the government must start work on all approved development projects within four months.
