Kohala Bridge sit-in ends after successful talks; Pakistan–Azad Kashmir traffic restored after three days

0

ABBOTTABAD, Dec 01 (APP):The three-day blockade of Kohala Bridge by the Tehreek Awami Huqooq Circle Bakot ended late on Monday after provincial and federal representatives reached a written agreement with the organisers, restoring traffic on the main route between Islamabad and Muzaffarabad.
The sit-in had blocked the Kashmir Highway for three days, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded on both sides of the River Jhelum and disrupting the main road link between the federal capital and the Azad Kashmir capital. Meanwhile, the protesters dispersed immediately after the agreement was signed, and movement on the route resumed.
PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary General and former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi told participants in a video message that he had convened a meeting of the Tehreek’s core committee with Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam.
He added that the demands had been forwarded to the relevant federal authorities for early implementation and that he would also place the matter before the prime minister.
Furthermore, Murtaza Javed Abbasi acknowledged the determination of the protesters and assured them of his support.
Negotiations at the site were led by Abbottabad Mayor Sardar Shuja Nabi and MPA Nazir Abbasi on behalf of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, while former MPA from PMLN Sardar Fareed Ahmed Abbasi represented the federal government.
The leadership listened to the organisers’ demands and later finalised the written agreement. However, they noted that progress would depend on timely administrative steps.
While addressing the gathering, Sardar Shuja Nabi said that the provincial government would begin work on all agreed development projects within four months.
Meanwhile, he stressed that implementation would begin without unnecessary delays.
The protesters had called for the restoration and construction of important roads, including the Kohala to Tarch route, Boi Road, Bakot to Nathiagali Road and Patan Kalan to Plahair Road.
They also sought the rehabilitation of earthquake damaged roads, schools and hospitals under ERRA and PERRA, while demanding funding for educational institutions in Birote.
Their list further included the establishment of a girls secondary school in Birote Khurd under the provincial ADP, formal approval of Tehsil Bakot and the establishment of a federal hospital at Kohala.
The sit-in was organised by the Awami Huqooq Circle Bakot Action Committee and the Naujawanan Action Committee convened by Ghuzanfar Ali Abbasi and other local leadership, and it remained peaceful throughout the three day blockade.
Concluding the protest, convener Ghuzanfar Ali Abbasi thanked the officials involved in the negotiations and said that under the written agreement the government must start work on all approved development projects within four months.

Aurangzeb reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to sustainability, SME reform, responsible digital innovation

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 1 (APP): Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday said climate change was an urgent economic reality for Pakistan, reaffirming the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable finance, green taxonomy implementation, and climate-aligned disclosure frameworks.
Stressing the need to support SMEs in formalizing their financial reporting practices, he highlighted Pakistan’s proactive regulatory direction in digital assets and emerging technologies, where new institutional frameworks are being established to bring innovation into the formal, transparent, and compliant economy.
The finance minister made these observations while talking to a delegation, led by President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) Jean Bouquot, which called on him accompanied by President of the South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) Ashfaq Yousaf Tola, VP SAFA Humayun Kabeer, President ICAP Saifullah and President ICMAP Ghulam Mustafa Qazi.
The meeting was also attended by Auditor General of Pakistan Maqbool Ahmad Gondal, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Akif Saeed, and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance.
Senator Aurangzeb welcomed the visiting delegation and appreciated the global role played by IFAC in strengthening the accounting profession, promoting international standards, and advancing transparency and trust in financial reporting.
He noted that Pakistan’s sustainability agenda, climate finance commitments, and green economic initiatives align with the issues raised by the IFAC President.
He referred to Pakistan’s acute exposure to climate shocks, highlighting that recent flooding alone was feared to shave half a percentage point from GDP growth.
In this context, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing green finance initiatives, the implementation of the national green taxonomy, and the roll-out of sustainability frameworks through the State Bank of Pakistan.
He also underscored the importance of enabling SMEs to formalize their financial systems and improve disclosure capacity, particularly in industrial and export-oriented clusters where awareness and capability challenges persist.
He emphasized that coordinated institutional support would be essential to ensure their smooth transition to modern reporting and documentation practices.
The finance minister further outlined Pakistan’s progress in regulating emerging technologies. With an increasing number of Pakistanis participating in global virtual asset markets, the government has proactively established the Pakistan Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority and introduced a crypto council to build a licensing-based, KYC- and AML-compliant regulatory regime that integrates innovation into the formal economy.
Earlier, Jean Bouquot briefed the Finance Minister on IFAC’s mission to act as the global voice of the accounting profession, with 188 member bodies across 143 jurisdictions.
He highlighted IFAC’s priorities in sustainability standards, audit quality, ethics, the impact of AI on the profession, capacity building for small and medium practitioners, and support for public sector accounting reforms.
He emphasized the growing global need for specialized training in non-financial assurance to maintain trust in integrated reporting.
Auditor General Maqbool Ahmad Gondal informed the delegation about Pakistan’s transition from cash to accrual-based IPSAS standards through new ERP systems and digital reforms that aim to achieve end-to-end electronic payments and receipts within the current fiscal year.
He noted that these steps will significantly enhance public financial transparency and international confidence in Pakistan’s fiscal reporting.
SECP Chairman Akif Saeed briefed the participants on Pakistan’s regulatory alignment with international bodies, including IOSCO, and highlighted reforms in insurance, pensions, and capital markets.
He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to full IFRS adoption and explained the phased implementation of sustainability disclosures for listed and unlisted companies. He commended the collaboration with ICAP and ICMAP in strengthening ESG practices and corporate reporting.
Ashfaq Yousaf Tola and Hamayun Kabeer highlighted SAFA’s ongoing regional cooperation efforts, the challenges posed by geopolitical constraints, and the support extended by the Government of Pakistan during the current SAFA presidency.
They reiterated the importance of maintaining regional professional collaboration to strengthen economic integration and public trust.
ICMAP President Ghulam Mustafa Qazi reaffirmed the institution’s support to the government in training, capacity building, and integrating modern technologies such as AI into financial education. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s improving economic trajectory and assured continued institutional cooperation.
The finance minister thanked the delegation for their visit, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening partnerships in global and regional accounting frameworks, and extended best wishes for their engagements in Pakistan.

Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ wreaks havoc in Sri Lanka, causing floods and mass displacement

0

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 01 (APP): Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst flood disasters in two decades, with nearly one million people affected and more than 400 reported dead or missing after Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ unleashed catastrophic flooding and landslides across the island.

According to the UN relief coordination office, OCHA, 998,918 people across all 25 districts have now been affected, with 212 deaths reported and 218 people missing. More than 180,000 people from over 51,000 families are sheltering in 1,094 government-run safety centres as search and rescue efforts continue.

Cyclone Ditwah made landfall on 28 November before moving back over the Bay of Bengal, triggering some of the most severe flooding Sri Lanka has seen since the early 2000s.

The hardest-hit districts include Gampaha, Colombo, Puttalam and Mannar, as well as Trincomalee and Batticaloa, while deadly landslides in the central hill country have devastated Kandy, Badulla and Matale.

Initial assessments indicate that more than 15,000 homes have been destroyed. Over 200 roads remain impassable, at least 10 bridges have been damaged, and sections of the rail network and national power grid have been affected.

Flooding along the Kelani River, which runs through Colombo and surrounding low-lying areas, continues to hamper access and disrupt information flow from affected communities, complicating rescue and relief operations.

Severe disruption to electricity, mobile and communications, and transport networks are reported in northern districts such as Jaffna, with entire villages isolated.

Access to clean water also remains a major concern, with several areas reporting little or no supply.

Sri Lanka’s already fragile health system is under severe pressure, OCHA said. Several district hospitals remain flooded and are receiving only limited supplies, with critically ill patients being airlifted to functioning facilities.

Response is further hindered by recurring landslides and the breach of multiple tank bunds (embankments or barriers), including at Mavilaaru, heightening risks in Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

Authorities have also warned of rising food insecurity, as submerged farmland, damaged storage facilities and severed supply routes threaten shortages and price increases in the weeks ahead.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that floods significantly raise the risk of vector-borne, food-borne and water-borne diseases, urging communities to prevent mosquito bites, ensure food safety and use safe drinking water wherever possible.

Floodwaters have entered several hospitals across Sri Lanka, further straining the health system.

The United Nations in Sri Lanka activated its emergency coordination system on Sunday to scale up a unified response with government agencies and humanitarian organizations.

Sector coordination has been set up across food security, health, water and sanitation (WASH), education, protection, shelter and early recovery, while a multi-sector needs assessment is under way with disaster management authorities to identify the most urgent gaps.

“The UN in Sri Lanka is mobilising its teams across the system to support national rescue and early recovery efforts, in coordination with authorities. We stand in solidarity with all affected communities,” said UN Resident Coordinator Marc-André Franche.

Despite access challenges, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has delivered portable water to 25 safety centres in Badulla in the central hills, which had been cut off from the rest of the country by floods and infrastructure damage.

To support government-led efforts, India and Pakistan have deployed emergency teams to work alongside Sri Lanka’s armed forces in the worst-hit districts.

Severe monsoon flooding continues across Thailand and Malaysia, affecting more than two million people in southern Thailand alone and displacing nearly 25,000 people in Malaysia, according to OCHA. People have been evacuated in several hard-hit Thai provinces, while the rainfall is expected to ease in coming days.

In Indonesia, media reports cite at least 440 deaths from floods and landslides, with more than 400 people missing, particularly in parts of Sumatra, where thousands remain stranded without access to food and water.

China adopts practical storytelling to strengthen global outreach: Pakistani expert

0
BEIJING, Dec 01 (APP):Guangzhou is hosting the 2025 Understanding China Conference, where scholars and policymakers are examining how China communicates its governance model to the world.
Speaking at the event, Zafar Uddin Mahmood, Special Assistant to the Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of “Understanding China, said the Communist Party of China has moved from ideological statements to a practical style of storytelling meant to connect with wider international audiences.
According to Mehmood, past communication relied on political terminology that appealed to limited circles. Today the focus is on stories that show real outcomes. Examples include China’s poverty reduction efforts, its push for modernization and its handling of major challenges. By highlighting lived experiences rather than theory, China aims to project a fuller picture of its development and offer what it calls “China’s solutions” to global issues.
He added that this shift also involves tailoring messages to different regions. Narratives presented to developing countries often stress shared goals and mutual benefit, while communication with Western audiences focuses more on understanding and engagement, CEN reported.
The conference, organized by the Guangzhou municipal government with support from national institutes, runs from November 30 to December 2. It features forums on China’s 15th Five Year Plan, global governance, economic outlook and regional cooperation. Sessions also cover China-Middle East relations, China-US ties and cultural exchange. Experts say the platform aims to promote dialogue at a time when global development and security face new pressures.
