Pak boosting capacity to address adverse impacts of climate change: Nisar tells UN

UNITED NATIONS, April 23 (APP): Pakistan is strengthening its institutional structures to step up action to stave off the most drastic effects of climate change, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told the international community here.

Speaking after the signing of the Paris climate agreement at the UN General Assembly, which met at a high level, he said Pakistan, a country profoundly vulnerable to global warming, would establish a climate change council and climate change authority, adding that more than 5 percent of its annual budget was allocated to climate change activities.

At the same time, the Minister emphasized that adequate resources were critical for climate actions in developing countries. Noting that trillions of dollars were needed globally to effectively respond to climate change impacts, Nisar Ali Khan said the bulk of this amount has to be spent in developing countries, as their challenges and needs were enormous.

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP): Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has taken oath as Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan here on Saturday. The oath was administered by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa in a simple but dignified ceremony in the Supreme Court.

Justice Mian Saqib Nisar will act as Chief Justice of Pakistan during the period, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali remains abroad.
The ceremony was attended by Judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chief Justice and Judges of Federal Shariat Court, Chief Justice and Judges of Islamabad High Court, Attorney General for Pakistan, Senior Lawyers and Officers of the Federal Judicial Academy and Law & Justice Commission of Pakistan.

 

Poverty threatens national, regional, international security: Marvi

ISLAMABAD, Apr 23 (APP): Nations plagued by poverty are the most
vulnerable to crime and terrorism as poverty threatens not only national security but regional and international security as well.

“It is not a co incidence that foot prints of terrorism are found
in the poor and fragile regions of the world”, said chairperson
Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Marvi Memon while speaking
as chief guest at a round table discussion.

The moot titled “Poverty Alleviation and National Security” was organized by Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI).
Other keynote speakers on the occasion were Senior Economist
Dr. Hafiz A. Pasha, Secretary BISP Muhammad Saleem Ahmed Ranjha,
Chairman Taleem Foundation Dr Zafar Qadir, CEO National Rural
Support Program (NRSP) Rashid Bajwa, and CEO SDPI Abid Sulheri.

Pakistan signs Paris Climate Change accord at high level ceremony

UNITED NATIONS, April 22 (APP): Pakistan Friday signed the
Paris Agreement on climate change that commits nearly every
country to lowering planet warming greenhouse gas emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of global warming.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan inked the agreement
on behalf of the Government of Pakistan at a high level ceremony in the spacious hall of UN General Assembly.

In doing so, the minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s support
to the “historic” Paris agreement, adopted at the United
Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21), where 195 countries
endorsed the first ever universal, legally binding global climate
deal in December last. Today’s ceremony—also making the Earth Day
• was convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon.

UN human rights chief concerned over growing military role in Thai government

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 22 (APP): The United Nations human rights chief Friday expressed growing concern about the military’s deepening role in Thailand’s civilian administration, as well as tight curbs on dissent, as the country prepares to vote on a final draft Constitution.

“An open and dynamic public debate on the draft Constitution would foster national unity, strengthen the legitimacy and acceptance of the Constitution and provide a sense of collective ownership,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in a statement.

“I urge the Government to actively encourage, rather than discourage, dialogue and engagement on the draft Constitution. This would be an important step in establishing a solid foundation for a sustainable democracy in Thailand,” he added.

Nations reaffirm need to tackle world drug problem as UN concludes session

UNITED NATIONS, April 22 (APP): The United Nations General Assembly Thursday evening concluded a special session on the world drug problem in which member states reaffirmed their commitment to tackling the pervasive challenges presented by drugs around the globe and promoting a society free of drug abuse for the well-being of all humanity.

Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft wrapped up the proceedings, which began on Tuesday and during which Member States and civil society alike delivered a clear message: that they care about the world drug problem, and specifically about the people most affected by this problem.

Pakistan was represented at the special session by the Minister for Interior and Narcotic Control, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

Anti India protests held in Washington against killing

WASHINGTON, April 22 (APP) A candle light vigil was held outside the White House, official residence of US President Barack Obama in Washington, to protest against the recent killings of Kashmiri people in the Indian held valley and molestation of a 16 year old girl.

A large number of people from the Washington region and neighboring states of Virginia and Maryland attended the vigil to express solidarity with the oppressed people of Kashmir who are subjected to all kinds of brutality at the hands of Indian troops.

The people carried placards inscribed with slogans against the Indian government and for the United Nations to implement its resolution to get the right of self determination for Kashmiri people.

Privatization Commission directed to pursue pending issues with Etisalat

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): Minister for Finance Mohammad
Ishaq Dar on Friday directed the Chairman Privatization
Commission, Finance Secretary and Secretary Privatization
Commission to pursue pending issues with M/S Etisalat and hold
a meeting with it for early settlement.

The minister chaired a meeting to review the overall
working and performance of the Privatization Commission, said
a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The Chairman Privatization Commission, Mohammad Zubair
gave a short overview of the performance of the Commission
during the first nine months of the current fiscal year.

FBR directed to discuss budget proposals with stakeholder

ISLAMABAD, Apr 22 (APP): Finance Minister Mohammad
Ishaq has directed the FBR to discuss proposals for budget
2016 17 with stakeholder before these are finalized.

The minister chaired a high level meeting at Federal
Board of Revenue (FBR) on Friday where he was given a briefing
on Pakistan’s existing agreements on Avoidance of Double
Taxation with different countries.

The minister said the agreements needed to be revisited
for introducing possible changes and improvements in line with
latest international trends.
