PACES competition held; COAS awards winners

RAWALPINDI, May 6 (APP): An intense competition was witnessed amongst Pakistan Army players during 5th Physical Agility and Combat Efficiency System (PACES) Championship-2016, held at Ayub Stadium, Lahore from April 27 to May 6.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif was the chief guest on the occasion. He witnessed the finals and awarded prizes to the winners, ISPR news release stated here Friday. Commander Lahore Corps, Lieutenant General Sadiq Ali was also present.

A total of 275 contestants participated in the 10-day competition. PACES is an initiative to improve the physical training regime within the Army.

Democracy gaining strength; state pillars working harmoniously: President

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain Friday said that democracy was strengthening in Pakistan and the executive, legislature and judiciary were working harmoniously.

In a meeting with Secretary General Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Akbar Khan who called on him at the Aiwan-e-Sadr here, the President expressed satisfaction that the country was moving in the right direction and democracy would grow further with the passage of time.

The President said that democracy and good governance were essential for development and harmony in the country. The government attached great importance to ensuring human rights for all segments of society, he added.

Government’s prudent and business friendly policies.
Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, said this on Friday in a meeting with the members of executive committee of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) who called on him here.
He said that all sectors of the economy have witnessed turnaround due to reforms introduced by the Government and the media industry has also benefitted from this economic activity in the country.

Old design banknotes cease to be legal tender with effect from Dec 1: SBP

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): A Spokesman of the State Bank of Pakistan
(SBP) has said that as per Federal Government’s Gazette Notification of June 4, 2015, the old design banknotes would cease to be legal tender with effect from December 1, 2016.

The Spokesman in a statement said, it has now been decided to phase out all remaining old design banknotes of Rs 10, 50, 100 and 1000.

He said that the Rs 5 banknote and the old design Rs 500 banknote have already been demonetized.

in which he responded to comments made by Donald Trump on Fox News claiming if elected president he would use the weight of presidency to force Pakistan to free Afridi.

China wants economic cooperation with SA countries: Gao Yan

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): Chinese Vice Minister for Commerce Ms. Gao Yan said that China has desire to increase economic cooperation with South Asian countries including Pakistan.

Talking to Voice of America, Ms. Gao Yan said that China-South Asia trade cooperation’s prospects are very bright.

She said China-South Asian common interests are increasing and China is desirous of broad cooperation among industrial and trade organizations of South Asian countries.

US Senate committee attitude on F-16 purchase, not appropriate: Pervaiz Rashid

PM condemns honour killing of Abbotabad girl

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Friday strongly condemned the honour killing of an innocent girl in Abbotabad.

“Such a barbaric act is not only un-Islamic but also inhuman. The culprits must be brought to justice without any delay,” he said, according to a PM House statement.

He said such acts in the society were unacceptable and that the criminals should be prosecuted swiftly. “It is not honour killing. It is just plain murder,” the Prime Minister remarked.

IDPs to be sent back their homes by this November: Governor KP

ISLAMABAD, May 6 (APP): Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Iqbal Zaffar Jhagra on Friday said that Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) would be sent back to their homes by November this year.

Addressing a ceremony organized here in connection with Annual day of Red Crescent Society, the governor KPK said that the government was providing all possible facilities to the IDPs.

He said that Red Crescent was serving for the humanity and it has done a lot of relief work during the earthquake 2005 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
