Defence production aimed at maintaining balance of power: President

KARACHI, Nov 22 (APP): President Mamnoon Hussain Tuesday said Pakistan had kept the region safe from any mishap by maintaining nuclear balance and the purpose of increase in defence production was also to maintain balance of power in the region.

Speaking at the seminar “Stability and the Economics of Regional Peace in South Asia” on the occasion of the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2016, here, he said Pakistan was a peace-loving country and wanted cordial relations on the basis of equality with all the neighbouring countries, including India.

President Mamnoon emphasised that regional peace and stability was vital to ensure development and prosperity in the region. The regional countries should learn from past mistakes and refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of others, he added.

He said Pakistan was swiftly moving forward in defence production and different other fields, and the participation of the increasing number of countries in the IDEAS-2016 proved that fact.

Pakistan, he said, had set a precedent for the world by effectively curbing terrorism through the Operation Zarb-e-Azb and National Action Plan.

He said the excellent exhibition of defence production reflectd the extra-ordinary expertise and dedication of the experts and workers associated with their field.

The President pointed out that the government through a comprehensive strategy had invested in education and also promoted healthy activities among the youth, and those efforts were producing very fruitful results.

About the Kashmir dispute, he said it was the biggest challenge to peace in the region. The people of Jammu and Kashmir were deprived of their right to self-determination and were facing brutalities at the hand of occupation forces.

Pakistan, he added, would continue moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir.

President Mamnoon said repeated unprovoked ceasefire violations by India on the Line of Control were claiming precious lives.

No one should misconstrue the policy of restraint, as Pakistan was fully capable to respond to any aggression, he added.

He said India’s refusal to attend the 19th meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) hurt the efforts for regional peace, and violated the SAARC Charter.

The President reiterated that Afghanistan was a close neighbour and brotherly country, and its stability and prosperity was necessary not only for the region, but also for Pakistan.

About China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, he said the whole region woukld hugely benefit from the initiative.

President Mamnoon said the efforts by Pakistani experts in defence production were for regional peace. “We want that by maintaining balance of power, regional stability, development and prosperity be ensured,” he added.

He said the IDEAS-2016 was a milestone towards achieving those objectives, which gained international recognition in very short period.

“We are proud of our scientists and technical experts, who have produced the most effective, sophisticated and low-cost weapons of international standards.”

He said,”We want to invite our friends and the world community to join these endeavours through joint ventures and investment. Our this offer would be very beneficial for the economy of regional peace.”

Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, armed forces chiefs, Director General Defence Export Promotion Organisation (DEPO) Maj-Gen Agha Masood Akram, parliamentarians, and a large of delegates attended the seminar.

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): Minister for Commerce, Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan assured the Chinese delegation that the government will fully facilitate the Chinese investors in the country.

He said in a meeting with China Zhongde International Investment Group was led by Executive Chairman Zhao Guobin and Executive Secretary General Li Xin Sheng, a statement issued by Ministry of Commerce here on Tuesday said.

“Pakistan is an unexplored market and offer lucrative investment opportunities in different sectors”, he said.

The minister informed the delegation that commerce ministry will facilitate the Chinese investors in exploring opportunities in different sectors like Energy, Textile, Sports goods and Agricultural processing.

“The best foundation for China-Pakistan relationship is Economic Partnership”, the minister added.

Head of Chinese delegation Zhao Guobin said six companies from China are interested in coming to Pakistan and investing in different sectors especially Refinery, Steel and Energy projects.

These companies are particularly interested in making investment in Solar Energy Projects.

Safe City project to provide peaceful environment to people: CM

LAHORE, Nov 22 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday presided over a meeting to review progress on Safe City Project and different matters regarding the project.

Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said, “Protection of life and
property of the people and provision of peaceful environment to them is our priority and Safe City Project is an important step towards achieving these objectives.”

The Project was a milestone in achieving the goal of peaceful, prosperous and safer Punjab, he said and added that it was a mega project of public welfare which would have to be completed by working in a professional manner.

Shehbaz Sharif said that transparency, quality and speed in development projects were identity of the Punjab government.

Third Party Audit policy had been adopted for ensuring quality and
transparency in the projects, he said and added that the policy was also being implemented in the Safe City Project.

The Chief Minister said the government would extend all out cooperation to speedy completion of Safe City Project and no compromise could be made over quality and speed.

He said that in addition to Lahore, Safe City Project would be launched in other big cities of the province.

The delegation of Chinese Company Huawei said that Safe City Project
would be completed speedily at the earliest.

Provincial Minister for Law Rana Sanaullah, Chief Secretary, Inspector
General Police, Secretary Home, Chairman Punjab Information Technology Board, Chief Executive Officer Infrastructure Development Authority Punjab, Commissioner Lahore Division and concerned officials attended the meeting while Chairman Planning and Development participated in the meeting through video link.

PEMRA issues show cause notice to ARY News

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Tuesday issued show cause notice to ARY News TV for telecast of irresponsible and unprofessional remarks about Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on November 11.

PEMRA notice said the comments given by the host and the expert were unprofessional and an effort to damage the reputation of COAS.

At a time when professionalism of Pak Army and its role in war against terrorism were being appreciated, such comments were unacceptable.

By telecast of these comments, the channel has violated the Articles 19 and 204 of the Constitution, Pemra Act 2007, PEMRA rules 2009 and the code of conduct of the electronic media implemented on Supreme Court directives.

The management of ARY TV has been given 7 days to respond to the notice. The PEMRA has the right to ban the programme or impose Rs 1 million fine on the said channel or even suspend its license.

Pakistan’s protest to India over ceasefire violations on LoC

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): The Director General (SA & SAARC), Dr.Mohammad Faisal, Tuesday summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner, J.P. Singh and strongly condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations on 21 November 2016, by the Indian occupation Forces on the LoC.

According to Foreign Office spokesman, the incident occurred at Jandrot, Nikial, Karela and Baroh sectors, resulting in Shahadat of four innocent civilians and injuries to 10 others.

The Director General stated that the deliberate targeting of civilian populated areas is deplorable.

The Director General also condemned the violation of Pakistan’s Maritime Exclusive Economic Zone by the Indian Naval Submarine on 14 November 2016 in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Director General urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding and UNCLOS, investigate the continued incidents of violations and instruct the Indian forces/authorities to respect the ceasefire and international borders, in letter and spirit.

IDEAS-2016 to promote defence products: Rana Tanveer

KARACHI, Nov 22 (APP): Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain Tuesday said the IDEAS-2016 exhibition would provide a great opportunity to Pakistan, especially the Ministry of Defence Production, for promotion of products.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of 9th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar IDEAS-2016, he appreciated the efforts of
Defence Exports Promotion Organisation (DEPO) for marketing of Pakistan’s defence products.

He said Pakistan would further coordinate with foreign defence production companies.

He said the Ministry of Defence Production, under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, was fast expanding its scope of production.

Earlier, Director General of Defence Exports Promotion Organisation (DEPO) Major General Agha Masood Akhtar said the IDEAS exhibition was a source of inspiration for Pakistan’s armed forces. It had achieved the status of one of the major festivals in the country; providing many opportunities of mutual benefit to the participating countries.

He expressed his satisfaction that the halls at the expo centre here were full to their capacity. This year, two more halls—hall No.7 and hall No.8- were constructed to meet the increased demand for the space by the exhibitors.

The cultural shows and the sideline conferences were also the main feature of IDEAS-2016 exhibition, he said.

He thanked the federal ministries of Defence Production and Commerce, three armed forces and other stakeholders for organizing this very important event of IDEAS-2016 and making it successful.

Ahsan Iqbal urges int’l community to help resolve Kashmir dispute

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal has urged the international community including the United Kingdom to play their constructive role in ending human rights violations in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK) and resolving the dispute.

He emphasized that the insensitivity of international community towards the sufferings of the oppressed people of Kashmir can feed to the narrative of extremists.

The minister for Planning and Development was speaking at a lunch hosted by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to UK, Syed Ibne Abbas in honour of cross party British parliamentarians at the British Parliament, according to a message received here from London on Tuesday.

The lunch, organized to apprise the British parliamentarians on economic turn around of Pakistan, China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the regional situation including Kashmir, was also attended by Minister of State Dr. Miftah Ismail.

Ahsan Iqbal raised with the parliamentarians the issue of the worst human rights violations by the Indian security forces in IOK.

Speaking on India-Pakistan relations, the minister highlighted the escalation in tension between India and Pakistan due to unprovoked violations of Line of Control and the Working Boundary by India.

He said Pakistan has so far shown maximum restraint but it should not be taken as its weakness.

Ahsan Iqbal briefed British parliamentarians on the government’s reforms agenda.

He elaborated Four E’s—Economy, Energy, Extremism and Education, the priority areas of the government—and updated them on the significant progress made by the government in these four key areas.

The minister also updated the parliamentarians on CPEC, and highlighted its importance in economic integration of the region and socio economic uplift of the people not only in Pakistan but in the entire region.

The minister informed Lords and MPs about the four pillars of CPEC which includes: a) Regional Economic integration, b) Development of Gwadar Port, c) Connectivity with China, and d) Development of economic zones.

The minister shared his views on how UK can benefit from CPEC initiative.

Ahsan Iqbal explained in detail the achievement made by Pakistan in its fight against extremism and terrorism.

He said security situation in the country has significantly improved, particularly in Karachi, where business and commercial activities are picking up again and crime rate has significantly come down.

Responding to a question of an MP, the minister explained that federal government was working closely with all the provinces on various infrastructure projects including the CPEC.

The parliamentarians appreciated government of Pakistan’s efforts for economic turnaround and its improved revenue collection. They also spoke positively about improved security situation in the country.

The Lords and MPs were of the view that Pakistan UK trade and economic relations can further expand in the wake of Brexit as the UK would be looking for new trade partners.

Pak-Jordan foreign ministries hold bilateral political consultations

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): The Inaugural session of Pakistan-Jordan Bilateral Political Consultations was held on Tuesday in which the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including political, economic, defence and cultural cooperation were discussed.

Additional Secretary (Middle East & Africa) Tasawar Khan led the Pakistan delegation while the Jordanian side was headed by Ambassador Nayaf El-Zidan, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Both sides expressed satisfaction at the positive trajectory in the bilateral relations and stressed the need to enhance interaction at the leadership level, a press release issued here said.

Close cooperation between Pakistan and Jordan at various multilateral fora, including the UN and the OIC, was also noted with satisfaction.

Acknowledging the deepening economic ties, bilateral trade, agriculture, promotion of investment and regular exchange of visits by business delegations were identified as potential areas to enhance bilateral cooperation further.

It was also agreed to hold the 10th meeting of the Pakistan-Jordan Joint Ministerial Commission in the second quarter of 2017, and the inaugural session of Pakistan-Jordan Business Council at a mutually convenient date.

During the consultations, views were also exchanged on a wide range of regional and global issues.

The Additional Secretary gave an overview of achievements of Pakistan in improving security situation in the country and the measures taken for the implementation of the National Action Plan.

The Jordanian side appreciated Pakistan’s successes in Operation Zarb-e-Azb to root out the menace of terrorism.

The Additional Secretary also apprised the delegation about important regional developments, including the current situation in the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of massive human rights violations being committed by the Indian security forces, as well as the situation in Afghanistan.

Secretary General Nayaf-El-Zidan acknowledged Pakistan’s role and efforts in promoting regional peace.

He also gave a detailed review of the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East especially with reference to the situation in Syria, Iraq and Palestine.

He reiterated that Jordan would continue to play its role towards complete restoration of peace in the conflict ridden areas of the region.

Both sides acknowledged their similarity of views and approaches on various issues of concern and interest in their respective region.

Successful conclusion of the inaugural round of Consultations between Pakistan and Jordan would pave the way for strengthening the fraternal ties in a robust manner.

PNCA organizes special music program ‘Baitak’

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22 (APP): Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) on Tuesday evening organized special program “Baitak” in collaboration with Cyyad and Dastan at its Auditoreum.
Renowned Qawal Hamza Ikram, Khawand Bakhsh, Sehroz Nawaz and Amed Gul Pastho folk singer performed on the occasion and got big applause from the audience.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General PNCA renowned artist and actor Jamal Shah said PNCA would organize more such events to entertain the sufi music lovers.
He said the council is planning to start music training courses for the new talent, adding that interested youth will be given opportunity to learn music and other forms of art free of cost at PNCA.
He appreciated the performance of Hamza Ikram, Khawand Bakhsh and Ahmed Gul.
Jamal Shah said PNCA would like to arrange more such functions in collaborations with other cultural organizations of the country.
A large number of people from twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi also participated in the ‘Baitak’.

KARACHI, Nov 22 (APP) : Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, after inaugurating the 9th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar IDEAS-2016 at Karachi Expo Centre on Tuesday morning, took detailed round of eight expo halls where 480 companies, including local ones, showcased their defence products.

Fiftyfive countries, including China, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States, are participating in the event.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for Defence Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Shareef, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zakaullah and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman.

Besides diplomates from various countries, a large number of foreign exhibitors/delegates, representatives of local companies engaged in defence production and officials of three armed forces were also present.

The Prime Minister appreciated active participation by such a large number of foreign companies in the IDEAS exhibition. He was briefed about the new editions of defence production—local and foreign. He had interaction with many exhibitors, especially the foreign ones.

At the stall of Ukraine Defence Ministry, he was welcomed by Ukraine Defence Minister and Army Chief General Stepan Poltorak along with with Ukraine’s Ambassador to Pakistan Voldymyr Lakomov, Ukraine’s Consul General in Karachi Engr M A Jabbar and Second Secretary at Embassy of Ukraine Taras Mykytenko.

Before leaving the venue, the Prime Minister also witnessed the ceremony wherein memoranda of understanding were signed among different companies.

The Ukrainian Minister for Defence Production while talking to the state-run media after the Prime Minister’s visit, said his ministry was actively participating in the IDEAS-2016 exhibition.

The defence ministries of Pakistan and Ukraine had already forged deep cooperation and his visit to the IDEAS would further strengthen it, he added.

He expected sigining of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the two countries, which would be beneficial for them.

He said Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence Industry was participating and had displayed its various defence innovations. The IDEAS-2016 exhibition would bring wonderful results, he said.

“ This is my first visit to Pakistan,” he said.
